I had major back surgery in Aug, 04. I had a tumor in spine and now I have 6 screws and 2 rods in my spine. They had to totally rebuild two vertrabra in my lower back.

The last two trips to Magic Kingdom I have skipped splash and the coasters. I'm just not sure what to expect or if I am going to hurt something.

What do you guys think? Would it be ok to ride these after the back surgery?

god grief dont ask us you need to ask a medical professional!
dont think the folks at disney would be too impressed if you hurt your self on one of the rides knowing your condition
seek medical advice!

as the medics say consolidation of a spine (and bones) is at least 6 to12 months... (I( know because I had my C-Spine broken once C3/C4)

Don't know how old you are (because that really matters), but I think yoú better ask your doctor or the hospital your consulting at the moment...

Still on medication??... I guess so...

Your body is far more important than Disney...

Please take care...

Thanks guys.

I am 39. I guess I should have worded by post a little different. I was more or less looking for other Disney fans that have had back surgery and how they were doing on the rides.

See, we'd love to answer (I broke my back in High School, oh what fun times), but everyones injuries, surgery and healing times are different. This is why we all keep pointing back to your doctor.

What I will say is, don't take risks. And, if you're at Disney before being "doctor blessed" to be back on the rides, it's a perfect time to take in all the non-ride specific attractions!

After you check with your doctors... I'd still stay off of the coasters and splash!!!! You're body isn't really healed and why take a chance on doing further and probably permanant damage!!!!!! Not worth it....

Also... remember... you are going to have to rest and take breaks much more than you think you will. It's only 6 months and I'm sure if you try to push your body too much... it's going to push back and you won't like it. Believe someone who's had to have multiple neck and arm surgeries.

Treat your body like a temple. You've only got one.

Wait a second, do you mean you had the surgery Aug. 2004 or Aug 4th?:veryconfu
That would make a huge difference! I just had my one year anniversary of a much less serious back surgery, single level laminectomy/discectomy, L5/S1.
My surgeon told me not to even consider any rides for 6 mo to 1 yr. He also told me to realize that I will never be 100% again.:(

I am waiting for a report on Expedition Everest to see if I will be able to ride it. I am seriously considering R'nRC on my upcoming trip, it's so smooth with no jarring motions. It's been almost 2 years since I was able to ride it and I'm jonesin'!:sohappy:
I discovered that jerky rides are very bad for my back. BTMRR leaves me sore for a day, Dinosaur is off the list forever, even with Test Track, I have to lift myself up a little when we go over the blocks. I don't think I dare to try Splash, that impact at the bottom might do harm.

The walking is wonderful for a bad back though!

Oh well, we always have Soarin', my new favorite!

Take the doctor's advice and stick to it.

My mother has had spinal issues and recently had a spinal decompression operation. Prior to that she wore a TENS machine. She would ride Splash without a problem. With the exception of The Safari at AK, she would avoid all the other bumpy rides.

If Big Thunder has hurt you... in that case DON'T ride Everest... (I rode it)... it's not as smooth as it looks on the video...

Yikes, that makes me one unhappy camper.:brick:
Thanks for being honest! Hey, maybe I'll just walk through the queue to see the theming, then use the chicken exit. Gonna try to go for the AP Preview!

Hi! I had back surgery on June 18, 2004. They placed 4 screws and 2 rods at L5-S1 (lower back) .

My family and I went to the World from July 19-30, 2005 and I rode everything, I mean everything:sohappy: . From Splash to Space to BTMRR to RNRC, M:S, TT, ToT, you name I was on it.

You have to know your body and of course be sure that your spine is adequately fused (usually takes 10-14 months). Your doctor can tell you according to the f/up x-rays or MRI's he's done if you are ready.

If you go, be careful:lookaroun when riding Space, the turns and drops can do a number on your back but if you know when they're coming you brace yourself and everything will be fine.

All of the other rides will present no significant risk.

Let us know what you and your doctor decide.

First of all, hope you are recovering well from your surgery. I've had 2 L5-S1 discectomies. I just can't handle RnRC and Space Mtn is questionable. I do Splash Mtn. and BTMRR every trip, and because I can handle BTMRR, I'm thinking I'll be ok on Everest, but will also be waiting for some reviews. Check with your Dr. --- not worth the risk. Best of luck! :animwink:

Thanks guys/gals for all the advice. The surgery was in August of 2004 and I am still no where near 100%. I guess I never will be. I have about 95% mobility. I can't walk very far. I can't make it through the mall without having to sit own about every 10 minutes. The only thing that I have left that I like to do is ride bicycles.

We are planning a Feb, 05 trip to Disney and I would really like to get on some of these rides again.

We go to Disney about 8-10 times a year. It is great having Florida resident seasonal passes and we only live 2 hours away.

That's the situation my mother was in prior to her surgery. She could not cope with the constant vibrations of Big Thunder Mountain, but the potholes of the safari were not a problem, neither was Splash Mountain.

I got plenty of exercise pushing her wheelchair around the parks :D

But the whole thing is too complex to generalise, it's really between you and your doctor to establish what is acceptable.
