I've got to think that National Geographic was also a big part of the appeal given how prominently it has been used on D+.
Good point. The "five tiles" of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, LucasFilm, and NatGeo was a big focus in the development process.

I think the rest of the Fox library though was viewed as Hulu (Star) content and filler. Which brings me to the point that if the stuff they plan to license out is Fox produced (or old Disney produced) shows/movies that they aren't using or planning to use on D+/Hulu/Star then what's the harm in monetizing it? I don't think they are going to be licensing out Star Wars or MCU or Pixar/Dsney Animation works.
If the content is stuff that isn't adding value to the best family streaming platform there is, then why would anyone else be willing to pay for it?

Some of it could be horror films or other adult content that Disney doesn't feel works for D+ or they feel they don't need for Hulu/Star. Some of it might be old TV shows (like from ABC or FOX) that Disney doesn't seem to have leaned heavily into as content for steaming and other streamers might value more. (Most of the TV stuff they are using has been children/family oriented Disney Channel fare)

But I guess my thought is that other streamers might be willing to spend some cash to increase their content because they aren't otherwise as robust as what Disney has access to. Maybe. The devil is in the details.

There's also the option of licensing some stuff in a non-exclusive manner so they can keep it on D+ or Hulu/Star. Less favorable - and wouldn't make as much revenue - but could be an option. I could see something like licensing out the Fox Marvel films, for example while keeping them on D+.

I'm personally rooting for the "Chaotic Evil" scenario where Iger opens the call by announcing he's acquired the WWE from Vince McMahon for $8 billion (which is actually a tremendous value considering he's giving the NBA a billion dollars every year).

...and I'd like to turn the rest of this call over to John Cena. John?

I can respect that. I'm a (non-Chinese-Canadian) guy but I still totally get the mother's behavior being strongly influenced by an emotionally-overbearing and hyper-judgmental grandmother, as well as respecting your heritage but not feeling emotionally connected to it because of the physical separation from your family's country of origin. Maybe the boy band thing is alienating for some but my son listens to the soundtrack ad nauseam and it's forced me to think about the movie more than I would otherwise.
The boy band thing wasn't necessarily alienating, it just seemed like a very superficial thing to base the emotional pivot of the movie on. The main character is trying to find her independence from her family and the way she sees going forward is... by seeing a boy band in concert.

Next to Riley struggling to understand her emotions, Mirabel and Moana trying to flat-out save her families, and Miguel on a quest to connect with deceased relatives before their memories faded from existence, really wanting to go see a concert just doesn't really seem like much of a character arc. Seems like a plot device more worthy of a sitcom than a prestige Pixar film.

Hmm. Note, I haven't seen the movie. However, I grew up in the PacNW and had multiple Asian friends, and one of them in particular has always stayed me because of the hardline her family, took vs other families, including Asian families. My first experience was inviting her to a Halloween party in 6th grade. My Mom tried several times to talk to assuage concerns so that she could attend. What we would be doing, what we wouldn't be doing. Her father really did not want his daughter trick-or-treating and didn't trust American parents would *actually* mean no. Asked about her coming late, leaving early. But no. Given that me and my friend group were the ones the teachers loved because of how straight arrows we were, my Mom had a hard time understanding how little trust we were given. This continued throughout school including denying his daughter the freedom to attend an out-of-state college to where she had earned a full-ride academic scholarship. Last time, I saw her was some very non-father approved activities near her father-approved campus. Her father might have said, "See this is why I do what I do." While others would see the rebellion at the first opportunity as a natural reaction. She's a neurologist so that little rebellion didn't hurt, but I do wonder what her life would have been like if she had been allowed to pursue her dreams instead of her father's expectations. She was one of the smartest girls in my class, and wings being clipped like that, and the display of lack of trust... It bothered me then and it bothers me now.

So based on what you said here, I don't read superficial. But a real phenomenon in where kids find themselves denied pretty basic and every day opportunities afforded to most kids. For Mei its a boy band. For my friend it was a Halloween party. Ms. Marvel also used this idea. Not everything has to be save the world or your family. For most of us our lives aren't going to revolve around life or death, but the freedom to simply be you and partake in the things that mean something to you. I think that's a pretty important message. One that doesn't have to center around ethnicity either. Lots of parents due to religion, helicoptering, "man card" activities which brings to mind a movie like Billy Elliot, make choices that limit their kids horizons. For those of us who haven't had to deal with that maybe it doesn't hit the same way, but the positive reviews seem to indicate for those that do, it really does.

Not out of the question. I mean, we are talking about two guys who have held on to their power long after they should have given it up. ;) :D

'Soul' was good yet missed ... something... that prevents it from being a bigger hit. I enjoyed 'Luca'. 'Turning Red' was atrociously bad. I still don't understand the appeal of 'Encanto'. 🤷‍♂️

Soul was very good, but it felt very adult in tone and theme. I can't imagine most children would want to rewatch it again and again.

Turning Red is either beloved or hated depending on how much you are able to identify with the main character. Since I had overbearing parents growing up, I sympathized.

Encanto has great songs, beautiful animation and well-developed characters.

I think Nintendo USA is Pacific time zone
So is The Walt Disney Company, but they still write their start times like normal people.

Things I predict Iger will say during earnings call:

"There's never been a better time to be a Disney fan. As an example, our guests continue to love park reservations and paying for FastPass."

"We have our media schedule mapped out for the next decade. MARVEL's Caterpillar Man will launch phase 7 of our cinematic universe when it premiers on Disney+ in 2025. We think the $400 million per episode budget will be entirely justified by the record engagement it is sure to deliver".

"We have full confidence in the profitability of Disney+, which we expect will happen, as we originally predicted it would, by 2035."

"Our solution to declining theatrical release revenue is to open our own movie theaters and charge a premium to sit through our live-action remakes. Davy Crockett's Alamo Drafthouse will be coming to select markets by the start of the next fiscal year."

"Y'all laughed at me for betting the farm on Avatar, well who's laughing now?! That's why we're adding more Avatar to our parks."

"Our acquisition of Target will ensure optimum leverage of our brand across all possible activation channels"

"At Disney, we're always looking to grow our product line to share our beloved stories in unique ways. Disney's Happily Ever After Retirement Resort will give our most devoted, long term fans an opportunity to share their passion for our history with the younger generations who will sporadically visit them. Residences can also be bundled with our Haunted Mansion cemeteries...."

"Bob Chapek? Never heard of her..."

Interesting, the layoffs have begun at Star + in Mexico Argentina and Brazil. I expect Domestic Media Entertainment Distribution reductions to begin soon.
