Disney’s Chief Diversity Officer Exits Role

You are missing a huge point just like she did. No one goes to Disney to be "accurate" They go there to enjoy the Legacy, the History, the tradition of Disney and the Parks. For generations. There are tons of details that make Disney, Disney. Every time I went to Disney with my daughter growing up we would say "We want the Red Head!" along with the Pirates and Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and girls at the start of the fireworks. Those are definitely small details but are some of my favorite Disney memories. Latondra didn't seem to be a Disney fan and didn't "get" a lot of the details she was destroying. She just seemed to be walking around the Parks looking for stuff to be offended by to justify her job and salary.

I was watching a Minions land character meet and greet video yesterday and their introduction, “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, all creatures great and small” gave me the warm fuzzies I used to get at Disney… and in many ways don’t anymore.

It’s ok to change but all Disneys changes seem to be addition through subtraction, they don’t seem to get how important nostalgia is to the parks success.

In some cases (Jungle Cruise headhunters) subtraction is necessary, in other cases (ladies,g,b and g) they could have easily added “dreamers of all ages” at the end and retained the nostalgia while making it fully inclusive. Some of their decisions to eliminate nostalgia make no sense.

If I'm making predictions, I think we'll continue to see racial, gender, and even LGB diversity pushes. I think you're about to see a big rollback in TQ+ stuff.
This is not unusual. I’m fairly liberal in terms of what behavior adults consider acceptable and how other adults respond to it.

But in my opinion, some loons on the left have gone too far and other loons on the right are overreacting. Nobody needs drag queen story hour in the children's section of the library and I seriously doubt a statewide law was needed to prevent teachers from sexualizing young children. Yet here we are name-calling and trying to use the law to bludgeon each other instead of addressing the goofy issue de jour like reasonable adults.

In the meantime, all the work we've done to assure people that they should feel accepted and comfortable in their own skin is being undone by providing more "boxes" than ever, forcing them to identify with and push particular agendas.

We're failing our kids. If a classroom has a kid with two moms, the parents and teacher should get together and discuss sensitive ways to handle any questions that other curious kids may ask. Also, true gender dysphoria is real but rare and kids are terribly confused by what they see on social media. We can't shield them from it so we had better find a way to handle these issues. Passing laws is not the answer. We need to do better.

Sorry for the rant.

She's also a grifter. She's an "artist" who sells costume jewelry for thousands of dollars, which feels an awful lot like a way for people who want to leverage her power and influence to funnel her money.

You're kidding?

Ms. Newton really did/does that? How is that even allowed from a senior executive?

"Art sales" are the oldest money laundering trick in the book. Any company that puts themselves in a position where a senior executive is selling "art" on the side is not being led well. Perhaps Disney's senior execs finally realized they were being played by an art grifter?

I'm really amazed that it was being allowed to begin with, but at least she's gone now.

Her grift has ended at Disney, onto a new company to grift money out of.

I'm suddenly reminded of one of my favorite Portlandia sketches... 🤣

I don’t think she had a political job. She was supposed to work on diversity and inclusion, which are social issues.
Yes she does! She shoved politics and ideological politics down to our throats. If Disney want successful movies and make more money, it has to stop. They can continue to do diversity and inclusion, but the political nonsense must end.

Oh. My. Gawd. 🤣 :banghead: 🤣 :banghead:

Incredibly galling. Although I'm laughing out loud here because when you look at the stores she sells her art in, they are all in wealthy (and very, very white) beach or resort communities. I've walked past the one in La Jolla many times; it's right in the village on Prospect, it has some of the highest commercial rent in an already spendy town, and I know for a fact which old family owns that strip mall property.

I wonder if Ms. Newton knows the background there to that property and its owners? ;)

The word "grift" suddenly seems too tame for this.

Anyone in the market for a $200 cocktail pick? Make it a set of four for $800.

Oh brother.

Drag Queen story hour hasn't hurt anyone, and is only being attacked because the bigots needed another target to hate.

Kids have been exposed to drag queens forever in person, TV, and movies. They're just fun characters.

Turn off your radio and stop hating people because someone told you to.

I don’t hate anyone and I don’t think drag queen story hour will hurt anyone. If that’s what a particular community wants it’s fine with me. I certainly do not support anyone passing laws against them or protesting outside the event.

But this is the kind of thing people are not used to seeing - I haven’t heard of bringing drag queens into children’s events until very recently. Maybe try to be a bit more understanding of people who don’t immediately accept them.

I think you’ve illustrated my point fairly well though with the “oh brother” and telling me to turn off my “radio” and stop hating people because someone else told me to. Why not try constructive discussion instead?

Are these needy female impersonators that desperate for validation from straight society that they need to read books to children in their costumes?

Then why bring it up? Don't go. It's only an issue because certain people need a group to pick on and this is one of their targets. You can't join them and then get all defensive.

No one is being forced to attend and it's harmless.

If we hadn't arbitrarily decided as a society that men can't wear dresses or makeup drag wouldn't even exist as a concept. It would just be clothing.

They do it because people attend and clearly find value in it.

Funny how people get up in arms about this but have no problem with kids attending church or other things at their parents behest.

That's the problem. People who have a problem with this aren't content to just do something else. They want to control and force their values on others.

Did you read the rest of my post or did you start replying after that particular sentence?

Society’s choices are often arbitrary, but they do exist. My post wasn’t targeting drag queens for being drag queens. I was using the children’s story hour as an example - along with the Florida law targeting teachers - as examples of what people consider extreme or outlier positions from both left and right.

No one is going to shape society completely to their liking. We don’t have to compromise our values, but I think we can at least consider other people’s sensibilities as long as they’re not hateful.

Suggesting that the recent increase in attacks against the LGBT community are not driven by hate is absurd.

It’s completely absurd. What on earth did I say that led you to think I was suggesting it?

"we can at least consider other people’s sensibilities as long as they’re not hateful."

Implying that the attacks on drag queens and other marginalized people are in the realm of reasonableness when it's just the target of hatred of the moment.
