Is it just me or does the end of 2012 seem like a long time to be working on a resort? I mean the new oaks resort next to Port Orleans took only a couple of months to finish. What's so special about this resort that it's going to take two+ years to build?

What new oaks resort? Do you mean the Pet resort or the Golden Oaks home site?

The new Animation resort is a 2000 room monster - its enormous.

I would imagine that they're pretty much having to start over from scratch... even in the one or two buildings that have already been built, they've sat stagnant for so long that there's no telling what type of issues are having to be overcome.

The Golden Oaks site, I couldn't think of what the full name was. I guess I was just thinking in terms of the resort being a value that not a whole lot would be put into it and it would be finished within a year maybe a year and a half.

Remember that at the moment the Golden Oaks site is just cleared land, very little is built there right now.

With this new value resort they have to build and fit-out 2000 guest rooms and everything else that goes with that. Its a huge project.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up for me

what is funny is that it took only about 2 years to complete the initial construction of Disneyland or that it took just over a year to complete the Empire State Building.

I think the pace of construction projects as a whole is slower nowadays..

I think unions are a bit more prominent and forceful with their rules.

The ESB was built mostly by underpaid immigrants and 5 of them died during its construction...it may have been rushed (likely because there was a competition at the time to build the world's tallest building).

And Disneyland was also rushed and really shouldn't have opened when it did (which is why opening day was pretty much a disaster).

so much for taking my comments likely...it was just a simple analogy to the length of the project.

Just kinda my opinion on the new resort. It looks really fun and well themed as far as the finding nemo and lion king parts go. The ariel/little mermaid place is kinda repetitive of the nemo area or vice-versa i would say the nemo section looks better however but that doesnt really bother me that its two underwater movies together. What does bother me is they chose to theme it after CARS????????????? cmon the concept art looks like a wasteland with some possibly partial animatronic figures. i dont like the idea of a cars themed section and it looks really bad to me. I'd request nemo or lion king how bout you guys?

While it wouldn't have been my choice either, Disney is going with what people want. Cars is extremely popular with younger boys, and it is a segment that Disney needs to try and recapture. The franchise is a big money maker, which is why DCA is getting an entire land and one of the most expensive attractions ever made centered around it.

i'd prefer they not do what people want, but what people didn't know they wanted but once they experience it, realize they could never live without it.

deep, i know.

I like how it says 800 construction jobs, because those people already have jobs at a construction company its really just creating work for them.

But i do like to see that more suite resorts are being made. No more of this two room stuff for a family more than 5.

There are going to be 10 guest-room buildings, 8 of which have yet to be built. It's an enormous construction project. They're probably playing it safe with the "end of 2012" comment, as they could have it done mid-2012 if they hustle. But they still have to furnish and decorate every room after the construction crews are done.

I wonder what it costs to build something like this...

I'm guessing somewhere in the $50 Million area  If I had a clue what the square footages were of each building/floor, I could probably ballpark. A lot of the cost has already been written off, since they've done almost all of the site development and placed the foundations for every building.

Disneyland and WDW were built by SEVERAL construction companies at one time. These days, there might be one or two prime contractors on a job (like FLE). I don't know who's building the Animation Resort, but it's likely one GC prime and separate prime mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors.

If anything, pace of construction projects has actually improved over the years. Things that were built at an apparent fast pace years ago were done so in unsafe and downright shady ways.

I think unions are a bit more prominent and forceful with their rules.

Actually, they were worse back in the 70s. There were hardcore rules in the union handbooks that dictated the productivity of each worker, per shift. For example, a plumber was only required to set X number of plumbing fixtures in a given 8-hour shift. If he accomplished that in 4 hours, he got to read the paper and drink coffee for the other 4. Fortunately, for the most part, that's gone away.

I like how it says 800 construction jobs, because those people already have jobs at a construction company its really just creating work for them.

But i do like to see that more suite resorts are being made. No more of this two room stuff for a family more than 5.

"Creating jobs" is such a farce when it comes to construction. Even if a construction project gets a few people back to work, it's only temporarily. When that project's done, all those guys go home because the economy doesn't support projects of this size on a continuous basis.

Building a new hotel DOES create jobs, so that number is valid.
