Dismaland: Banksy's Disneyland Parody

Fascinating. I've always been a fan of Banksy, and I think this is cool, but as an artistic expression isn't Disneyland kind of an easy target to mock? Then again, much of his physical works have poked fun at well known symbols, so maybe this isn't much of a departure.

Definitely low-hanging fruit, but it's the sheer size and scope of the project I find impressive.

Guess it's an acquired taste - but I think its rubbish - literally.

I would expect no less from you. But the parody version of you on Banksy's version of these boards loves it. ;)

I like it. If I lived in the UK I would totally go check it out - without my kids.

People are focusing on the castle as Disney but that is just one part. There many different pieces that comment on negative parts of society, placed in an amusement park setting. The art isn't just Banksy's other artists have works there as well.

I like that it's trashy.

Have you all heard of this? An English artist (whom some say is actually a collection of artists using a pseudonym) known as "Banksy" has commissioned a dismal place as the "anti-Disneyland" and opened it as an exhibition for the next month or so. It is a collection of derelict physical art pieces that are sort of dark comedy, but specifically targeting Disney and its parks.

Here are some pics I got off the web in various sites:

BN-JY125_0820ba_J_20150820122111.jpg Dismaland.jpgBN-JY124_0820ba_J_20150820122111.jpgBN-JY119_0820ba_J_20150820122054.jpg

That final one is of Cinderella's coach crashing. The castle one is really an undrained pool. The whole attraction is built on the site of an old water park pool that closed in 2000.

Search around the internet and you will find plenty of stories about it, since it seemed to open recently. The artist says that he wants to provide an escape from escapism. He thinks that theme parks ought to have bigger themes, and this seems to be his way of challenging them to do so.

Perhaps he has never heard of Epcot -- or maybe he has (or maybe the remains of EPCOT), and that is the problem.

But mostly it seems an interesting take on the Magic Kingdoms of today.

Here is a good article on it: http://www.theguardian.com/artandde...maland-amusements-anarchism-weston-super-mare

And another: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/banksys-dismaland-bemusement-park-open-6285232

Anyway, what do you all think? I could not help but put it out here for our WDW Magic fans to chime in.

Hey, @wdwmagic and other English friends, let us know if you guys have heard more about this thing and how it is being received over there across the pond.

The only thing that would make this place more depressing is if it had Fastpass+. ;)

I like Banksy's work, but he and Thierry often come across as douchebags. The whole Big Thunder stunt at Disneyland was just foolish and dumb.

In any case, Dismaland has a TV commercial now, which is most likely not really a TV ad.

I think this is hauntingly interesting as a social commentary. It is also amusing.

Slightly related topic: Do any of you follow @FakeThemePark on Twitter? Some people see it as making fun of Disney but I think it's funny...and I'm a total Disney fan boy.

In our Hall of Presidents, you'll see Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, and John J. Pershing because they were maybe also Presidents we think?
