"Discoveryland"

I'm all for the name change. Future World sounds good but the pavilions just don't all shout future. Discoveryland seems so much more appropriate. That section is full of discovery. I just hope too much of the park doesn't change with the name.

I agree with CTX...To me, Epcot is currently about Discovery, not the future. Either way, let's face it, something needs done to the front of Epcot. It's yucky and cement-ish and old and dirty looking. I think it's time for a change. Wasn't Walt about progress? He wouldn't want to stick with the same old boring ideas when there are new fresh ones just waiting to be tried on for size. :)

I agree! I was most looking forward to Epcot when I went in January, but I was SO disappointed by Future World!

1. TT wasn't working properly (stopped 4 times and then shut down completely)

2. No Food Rocks

3. WoL was closed

4. Universe of Energy was cute - but not particularly informative and the dinos were better at AK

5. Imagination was AWFUL. That ride was the complete opposite of imagination

6. Spaceship Earth needs a refurb badly!

Imagination needs another re-do. I still can't imagine what Imagineers were thinking when they tore the original out. As they were dismantling the beautiful and imaginative sets were they really thinking, "oh boy, wait till they see what we have in store for them!" The 2nd version was the anti-Imagination, if you ask me. The 3rd is better and is an average to good dark ride in the same league as Pooh or Snow White. But the original was in the same league as Pirates or Haunted Mansion. But, cannot lament on the past, just hope that something is in store for the future.

Regarding the entrance to Future World. That is another thing I still wonder about. When they were ripping out the beautiful planters and building brown cement slabs was there really a sense of, oh boy, how much better is this! It looks like a memorial/cemetary now. I like the idea of "Leaving a Legacy", but I'm not a fan of the entrance vs what it was before.

Still, none of these things change my opinion that Future World is more about Discovery...the Discovery of our relationships with the Land, the Seas and Space...the Discovery of technology, the auto industry, and even the "Universe" of Energy. Its through the discovery of what these things mean and what they can do for us that will enable us to discover and develop new plans for the future. The pavilions themselves though do little to give us insights into the "Future" of their respective themes. Sure, they do a little, but it surely isn't the focus of each pavilion.

(As an aside, from my understanding, the name change at AK from Safari Village to Discovery Island was made because of the confusion it caused. A lot of people were looking for the safari in "safari" village)

lol. Call me crazy.

O.K., you're crazy. Couldn't resist with an opening like that.
:)

I don't know about Discoveryland, though. Sounds a little too much like exploration and something you do when you discover a new continent or island. I think Future World needs something more tech themed than discovery. If they are infact doing away with the Innoventions building, maybe Epcot Innoventions? Maybe Progress Center or somethink like that.

And Celebration is, for good or bad, the future. Residential Development on a grand scale, all gussied up to pretend to be something that it pretty well destroyed...urp - the architect in me apparently just reared his ugly head.

I would love to see Future World get a makeover, and I even think greenery works - green design is the wave of the future right now.

I could be wrong aboout this - maybe someone can confirm - but I had once heard that the reason the original show was replaced had something to do with the renewal of the sponsor's contract. If the info was correct, most sponsors have written into their contracts that upon renewal their sponsored attractions must receive a major update. So even though nothing was wrong with the original show (which I sadly never saw), it had to be updated for contractual reasons.

Anyone else heard of this?

Yes. But Kodak didn't want to spend much money on the rehab, but wanted to reduce Maintenance costs, so they got rid of all the AA figures, which are expensive and labor intensive to maintain. Also they got rid of the turntable, which was always breaking, which had the dreamships and Dreamfinder and Figment, also they got rid of the movie projectors, there were 27 of them and replaced with video. The ride could have been much better, but it comes down to the same thing as always..............
MONEY!!!

Do the sponsors actually pay for both the development costs AND maintenance for the pavilions? Somehow I really have my doubts about how much they really contribute. I thought it was more of a major monetary contribution to the design at the beginning and then a yearly lump sum for the next 5 or 10 years or whatever it is.
