Discovery Island

I don't think that any plans are really in the works. Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom is kinda like Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom. The gateway to all the lands, so to speak. I highly doubt any attractions will be put there... =)

I think SweetPea is referring to Discovery Island in Bay Lake, not the new Discovery Island in AK. The old Discovery Island (which, by the way, originally opened as Treasure Island in April of 1974) quickly became a bird sanctuary and a nice side visit to the MK. There were several problems with 'other' birds nesting in the area and WDW was sued by the state Attorney's office regarding the way in which WDW attempted to relocate the birds. Quite naturally, when AK opened, it became the focal point for all animal attractions and Discovery Island closed down. I remember some old press articles a few years back about creating an island based on the Broderbund software hit Myst, but nothing ever came of it.

Discovery Island is both the island located in Bay Lake AND the area around the tree in AK that can be viewed as AK's main street USA

I was staying at the Wilderness Lodge about a month ago and rented a Water Mouse to zip around the lake. I went over toward River Country to see what was going on (Nothing). As I was coming back, I noticed a Launch pulling up to the dock on Discovery Island. It looked like only a couple of boat drivers on board. Probably one showing another how to drive the small launches. I wondered at the time if learning to use that dock implied that they might be getting ready to do something there, but could see no construction looking equipment. The trees on the island are covered with birds as is the shoreline around it. If it is not a Wildlife Preserve, it sure ought to be. I know they used to have a large population of Scarlet Ibis out there that was claimed to be one to the largest nesting flocks in the country and I believe was under some kind of protection at that time.

I was under the impression from reading these boards that they used to do some kind of treasure hunt/pirate thing for kiddies there.

Ahh here it is . And here

EDIT: after re-reading the thread.. it appears they don't actually use DI for the pirate thing anymore...

Marisa, glad to be of service.

MonorailGreen, don't sweat it!

One easy way to tell an old-timer from a newbie (only with regards to someone's age and not experience with the boards) is that some of us will never be able to associate Discovery Island with anything other than the Bay Lake island.

As far as I know, it's still a recognized wildlife refuge / bird santcuary and I'm sure it will remain that way as it helps the Reedy Creek Improvement District maintain its dedicated environmental causes.

There's a kids tour, Pirate Cruise that is run out of the Grand Floridian, that uses Discovery Island in Bay Lake as the finale of the tour.

The tour takes a group of kids ages 3 - 10 around Bay Lake on a treasure hunt. They use a pontoon boat and stop at each resort beach to find clues. They find the Treasure Chest on Discovery Island at the end. Its filled with plastic toys and candy. The kids love it.

Our bass fishing trip cm boat captain took us over there to fish. I can tell you the bass sure are plentiful over there. The Cm commented that nothing is at Discovery Island right now.
