I was remembering old trips I took to Disney World and remembered visiting Discovery Island. I know that it's closed now but I don't know why or how long it's been closed or will stay closed. I thik I heard once a movie was being shot there but I'm not sure. Could anyone help me and tell me what happened to Discovery Island?

I believe it was shut because it was a waste with AK opening and was no longer needed. There were rumours of it being turned into MYST island like the computer game but I think that idea is now dead.:goodnevil

They closed Discovery Island and put everything on the island into the AK. If you notice, the island part of AK with the Tree of Life is called "Discovery Island." So I made the conclusion, that they just brought everything over from Bay Lake and put it in AK.

I don't think Discovery Island was a big hit anyway.

I went to Discovery Island once in 1989 and never went back.

There have been several rumors as to what will happen to Discovery Island. Among them have been the possibility of a Honeymoon Resort with private cabanas.

That´s what I was going to say... I went once and it was nice, but almost empty. It really looked great for a honeymoon island, so I hope they really do it!

Wow, that sounds great. I'm glad to hear it hasn't completely vanished. It's such a pretty island that it would be a shame for it to go to waste. Do any of you know where one might be able to find news for this? Is there a suject board somewhere that people might know more info? Ya'll are a great help. Thanx!:D

On our last visit to Disney the guy's who man the boats across the lake told us that the plans for Discovery Island are indeed to turn it into Honeymoon Island. Though why anyone wants to go to Disney on Honeymoon always strikes me as strange, surely there are better things to do on honeymoon than meet the Mouse;)

I know you honeymooned with "the..." but surely you had to go out SOMETIME!!! There's so much to do at WDW besides the parks..swimming, sailing, golf etc....all the sorts of things people do on their honeymoon if they get tired of the obvious.

And let's face it, with so many people living together before marriage, honeymoons have turned into just another expensive vacation for lots of couples.

My wife and I went there on our Honeymoon but we also made sure we had quiet time in Clearwater Beach the second half of the trip. :slurp:

We also spent our 2nd Honeymoon celebrating our 5 year anniversary in 1999 at WDW. We had 6 days and the only time we went into the parks was the last night for MVMCP. There is so much to do.....we went to the water parks, PI, BW, DtD, horseback riding, golfed, boated, etc....it was the most enjoyable Disney trip I've ever taken.

Just to back up what has been said. Right now it isn't being used for much, some boat stoarge and things like that, but I have heard the rumor that they are going to put some cabanas or something on the isaldn to turn it into a specialty resort. Just imagine the price, OUCH!
