Discovery Island Dreams

Ok, I ride by Discovery Island quite a bit and wonder what Disney could do here to keep the space alive. I know about the video game "Myst" thing from a while ago but if you were in charge, what would you draw up to put there??

As for me, I am thinking possibly a private function island where limited guests could go to escape. Possibly something like a much smaller version of Castaway Cay with hammocks and trails. I am just coming up with some ideas in my head but wondering what you all would do if Disney told you to come up with a plan for DI.

I'm sure a DVC is on the drawing board.

I think a seperate ticket nightime adventure geared to adults would work. Basically a scaled down Night Kingdom with KP technology might work. Myst is a good idea but they would probably theme it to something Disney owns. (hopefully not pixar in this case)

Yeah, i like the Night Kingdom idea! As much as I love DVC I hope this stays open to anyone. Since Discovery Island is a piece of original Disney history.

Well if they did go Pixar they could do the island that was in the Incredibles and you can investigate Syndrome's layer. It could house different terrains and work rather well.

If the Kim Possible technology and testing works out in Epcot, I think they could probably do well with a Kingdom Hearts - Interactive experience over there. The game has always been a hit and there is little to nothing for that segment of guest aside from the new Kim Possible activity. They could tie it in to the release of KH3...

Just an idea....

...and here's hoping that DVC stays FAR away from it!

Kingdom hearts could be a great idea for a unique experience unlike any other!

THAT could be very cool!

Pixar movies are Disney movies, as a sidenote. It is simply a new form of the process. These are the movies our kids know and remember seeing.

Until Disney starts making effective short cartoons again with the classic characters, or really showing some of their older movies on the much-maligned Disney Channel, these new movies will be the Disney of the future.

I, for one, would love to see the return of the short cartoon starring Mickey, Donald, or another member of the crew. I can't believe that kids would not enjoy them if they came out.

Well, they have put a short in front of like 1 or maybe 2 (maybe more IDK) features such as Meet the Robinson's. I liked being able to see a short cartoon before the feature!

I like the idea of a night life area for adults.

Maybe some small cottages, and make it for adults only, romantic getaway, maybe exclusive for those who are honeymooning or spending an aniversary in the world.

I heard a rumor about this and think it is a good idea since they do so many weddings on property. That is some prime real estate no matter what they do with it.

Disney isn't going to be able to do anything with Kingdom Hearts until it is available cross-platform. Releasing the game for all platforms and PC would ensure a greater popularity base and maybe give the game the push it would need for its own experience.

I would love to see a much more public and immersive activity there, rather than something which can only cater to a select few.

yeah, I see where you are coming from but disney could and I think would make it cater to everyone. It is known by video game fans right now but it would become very popular just like some of the comic book movies i guess. There are many characters no one has heard of (except comic book fans) until they put them in a movie.

You know, I had never thought about it before, but a KH movie would be a pretty decent hit, I would think...especially if done right (not one of the Australian-animated tv or sequel types of movies...) and then that could build a wider fan base for an attraction...

(And I agree that they need to put it out across ALL platforms...)

Now that is interesting...a KH movie or even a small online game would be enough to make what you are suggesting quite feasible.

I think that they may re-theme Tom Sawyer into a Pirate idea.

Pirates To Invade Discovery Island?

6/06/2008

Jim Hill Media reports today on a rumored change coming to Walt Disney World's Discovery Island, the former wildlife preserve located in Bay Lake. The 11-plus acre island, originally called Raz Island, has been closed to the public since 1999, after the animals were relocated to Disney's Animal Kingdom park.

The rumor centers on a plan to reopen the island with a Pirates of the Caribbean theme, featuring everyone's favorite Captain.

(Ed. Note: While only a rumor, this plan makes perfect sense. Discovery Island is a prime piece of real estate in a terrific location, and is easily and quickly reachable by boat. It probably depends largely on what condition the remaining infrastructure on the island is in, and how well it's been maintained in the last decade.)

Honestly I don't think that they will do anything at all and it will sit and rot. They did the same thing with River County. That park became absolete when the other two water parks opened. When AK opened there was no need for something like Discovery Island. I really believe that they will just leave it to rot away just like River Country.

What is on the island now? Besides the "wave" maker for the GFRaS and Poly?Would they have to build bridge or walkway for the increase in traffic?
