Dinner Dress Attire

I'm obviously to the point where I'm thinking about everything for the cruise, and this is the best place to come. For dinner attire, are khaki shorts frowned upon for the more formal dinner of the 3 night cruise? I'm thinking I may need to go find a pair of dress pants but didnt know if khaki shorts were acceptable?

I just saw on the news yesterday that Disney Cruise Lines is going to allow shorts int he main dining rooms. I do not think that this would apply to formal nights on the long cruises. Have to wait and see what comes out from Disney Cruise Lines.

Yeah, DCL is relaxing their dress code a little by actually stating that shorts are okay in the MDR for dinner. I'm sure they mean nice khakis and not gym shorts or cutoffs. ;)

On the 3-night cruise everything feels very casual. Technically they do a dress-up night but it's more of an optional thing, really. I would think khakis with a short-sleeve button-up or even a long-sleeve button-up with sleeves rolled would look nice.

And, the rebel in me requires that I post this. This would be formal night on the Fantasy:

...because...you know...it's a cruise. Laid back. The guys got sooooo many compliments mostly from the crew! They loved the interpretation. I call it "Cruise Formal".

As I've said many times, I like getting dressed for dinner. I never wear shorts to dinner, even on casual nights, and I wear a tux for Formal Nights. But that's just me.

The dress code on DCL is a suggested attire. I have never seen anyone turned away for wearing shorts (even kinda gross shorts) to dinner, even on Formal Night. The bottom line is wear whatever you want. If you want to be "respectful" of the dress code, then pack a pair of khakis. If you just can't be comfortable in long pants, then wear the shorts and don't sweat it.

That's because the crew wants tips. They are going to compliment you on anything. I had a fake suede jacket with me on one cruise that I wore for the semi-formal night. I got lots of "what a beautiful jacket" and "you look so nice" etc from the wait staff. Really, for a $60 bargin basement sport coat that I wear because it does not crease when I jam it in a suitcase?

I will say, if you are going to make the effort of wearing a tie, at least button your top button.

That would ruin the spirit of the outfit! Their look says relaxed, and for guys who'd probably rather be wearing t-shirts, I give 'em points for making the effort. :)

The thing, is, if your shirt collar fits correctly, then you tie is not tight around your neck, it is tight around your collar, which leaves a space around your neck.

I don't know, I guess it just reminds me of when I worked in a grocery store in High School and the dress code was "Dress shirts and ties". Employeeswere wearling white paper thin short sleeved dress shirts with black concert t-shirts under them. with a 80's skinny tie with the knot 6 inches from their neck. That looked like hell.

Nah, 90% of the compliments were in passing. Most of the crew members who stopped to say something were not in a position to receive a tip from us. At least 2 or 3 were officers. So, nopity-nope on that one. ;)

Also, if you're wearing shorts & flip flops with a shirt & tie, it's relaxed. I unbuttoned that top button & loosened the tie so it was an overall continuity of the look. I still absolutely adore it.

Since this evening we've discussed cutting off the tux pants. Even if we did, I don't see us hauling that junk all the way onto a ship with us for a couple hours. I really do need to get the stuff sold. The guys will never wear any of it again. LOL!

Upcoming Fantasy cruise our plans for formal night include....Quite Cove pool and drinks! I was thinking of scheduling a couples massage for dinner time so I could get us as far from "formal" as I could but then I opted not to spend all that $$ just to indulge my little inner rebel. We'll put on slightly more clothing and enjoy without spending more. LOL! Formal just isn't for everyone. It's particularly not for us.

Exactly. The shirt was too tight. He could've worn it and been okay but I thought it was stupid to be uncomfortable so someone else can be happy with your appearance. I thought top button open with loose tie was better with the look anyway. No way were we buying yet another useless shirt to wear just for a few select hours on a cruise. So, the one he had worked, by God. :D

I love it! This, I think, would be fabulous for the teenage boys. I could see my youngest wearing the white shirt with a super hero tee shining thru. My oldest? One of his Call of Duty shirts. It would be them expressing themselves but still kicking it up a notch.

I know, you're totally in  mode. I'm sorry. Sorta. :p

I recall that look well from my days ringing groceries in the '80s. ;)

There's a guy in my office, a professional, who values comfort in his dress shirts and therefore buys them way too large. They don't even touch his neck when buttoned. Drives me insane. Looks completely ridiculous when he has to wear a tie (which, thankfully, is not often)--like a little boy wearing dad's clothes.

Not that anybody asked, but I have no problem with people being uncomfortable so that I can be happy with their appearance :D

No you're not. Not even a little!! :hilarious:

If someone made themselves uncomfortable for me I would laugh at them for their foolishness. Then maybe feel slightly insulted. But anyone who knows me knows better. ;)

You're right. I'm not. But I try to be nice. In a way. I think. Maybe. :hilarious:

My son and hubby are just bringing dockers and a sport's coat, no ties. That should be ok, no?
As I wrote earlier in the thread:

"The dress code on DCL is a suggested attire. I have never seen anyone turned away for wearing shorts (even kinda gross shorts) to dinner, even on Formal Night. Edited to add: @DisneyDebNJ , after re-reading my post, it seems kind of snippy and I didn't mean it to be. Particularly, if it seemed to be directed at you individually. It was not. My apologies.

It does seem to me, however, that we're beating this thing to death. It's not nearly as big a deal as we're making it out to be. Shorts are always fine now. (They always were before now, too; they just didn't advertise that fact.) Khakis are great. A suit jacket and/or tie is phenomenal. A tux is above and beyond the call of duty.

You weren't snippy at all :) No apologies necessary :)

Oh I'm just having fun with the topic because there's something wrong with my broken dress-up girl gene. Its fun for me. ;)

Yayyy!!!! Because me trying to get Ron to wear a tie is like wrestling a tiger in heat LOL .... Now, how to I break it to him, that if he does a 7-10 day cruise next year, like he wants, he has to wear a tie!?!?!? LOLOL

Skip it and go to Cabanas. Not sure how much we'll bother with the MDRs on our upcoming voyage. Mostly its time involved. We aren't too interested in the food. We've experienced the dining rooms. Its whatever we feel like in the moment. ;)
