I believe he is talking about booking not what happens when you get to the restaurant...You don't even have to link the dining plan to the reservation. Just show up for your reservation and they'll ask you "are you on the Disney dining plan?"

(Or CM)The only way you can have the dining plan without booking a package is if you have an annual pass.
Or DVC member.It depends.
If you have a room only reservation (no tickets) you would need to convert it to what Disney calls a package with tickets to add the dining plan.

I should have made that clear I have a reservation of a magic your way package pop with magic band ticket my final payment is next week can I add the disney dining plan afterwards? Or is it to late.....if I have a reservation can I add the dining plan onto it if I decide if worth it?
Last time I looked you can add it a little late, but there is a cut off...something like 1-2 weeks prior to arrival.I should have made that clear I have a reservation of a magic your way package pop with magic band ticket my final payment is next week can I add the disney dining plan afterwards? I'm so glad you did some research and you are doing what is best for your family. I wasted a lot of money on that plan before figuring out that it didn't work for me.After researching we decided it would not be worth it since my daughter is a picky eater and hated when we had it for free last time my whole family went( which was worth it lol)this way I know we would never eat 60.00 each of food in a day,and we really are not planning any sit downs except one in downtown,,,,,,,
