Dining Plan - Why is it a deal?

Seeing as how I just got back and utilized the DP, I have to put in my 2 cents worth. Both my husband and I made out very well on this, well the kids did too, although they got bored with the options (thats another topic).

Let me tell you that at our sit down meals, our receipt was no less than $150.00! (for 2 adults and 2 kids) Our counter service meals were no less than $30.00 for the 4 of us. We had breakfast in our room, purchased from the outside usually, danish, juice, bagels, cream cheese. We knew we would be packing in the food the rest of the day, so bfast was light. When we vacation, we do enjoy good meals, good service, 3 course food. That is why we did it. Now, some people dont like all that, and that is fine. You just have to weight it all out before you go. But I had to tell you that our sit down dinners were no less than $150.00 per night, of course, that included the 18% tip that we would normally pay ourselves as well. (Another subject - none of the meals were actually worth $150.00- but that is another thread altogether).

we love the dining plan.
i think it all depends on your family and the kinds of places you like to eat.
like someone said earlier, when my family goes on vacation, we love to eat. for some reason, we eat 3x the amount of food we would normally eat at home. For example, we love to eat at the Coral Reef, on our last trip i really enjoyed the blackened catfish (i think that's what it was)-blackened something anyway-it was about $25. and i also ordered the crab claws for an appetizer and that was $10. so all in one meal, my dining plan payed for itself for that particular day. At home, i am an el cheapo and would never pay $10 just for an appetizer that had 3 crab claws. But, since i am on vacation and if i am correct, i think the coral reef is considered fine dining, so i will splurge. my hubby and i like to find places that are a bit on the expensive side while dining at wdw to try to make the most of our dining plan. i think that if you utilize the plan in a way that really maximizes your dollar than you can come out ahead. conversely, if you don't need or want to experience some of the dining options that wdw has, and are content with eating at the counter service options than of course the dining plan doesn't make sense for your family.

i always feel like i come off sounding snotty, i really don't mean to so no one please be mad at me :hammer:.

btw: when talking about the refillable mugs-i think that these are a great investment for your trip but are only good while at your resort and are of no use during your trip to the parks. this is where your snack options come in handy, imo.

My family used the dp this past November and loved it! We were able to go to the nicest restaurants for dinner, which would have been pricey for us. Since we were able to order whatever we wanted, we were always full and were able to enjoy appetizers, entres, and desserts. We usually only get an entre so it's less money. It was more than enough food for us. For breakfast, we'd use our snack, lunch our table, and dinner our counter. Even with all that we still had some snacks left over.

I loved the dining plan last September and am having it again this September. Here is an example of one days ddp usage

Breakfast at Pop Century
Yogurt Parfait with Granola $3.79

Luch at Cosmic Ray's Magic Kingdom
1/2 Chicken and BBQ Rib Combination served with Mashed Potatoes and a seasonal vegetable $13.99
Triple Chocolate Cake $2.49
Large bottle of water $2.00

so that is so far $23.75 including sales tax

Dinner at Concourse Steakhouse
Honey Sesame Chicken Wings $7.99
7 oz. Filet Mignon - with mashed potatoes and gorgonzola butter $26.99
Seasonal Cheesecake $5.49
Orange Creamsicle Smoothie - Orange juice, nonfat yogurt, and strawberries $4.29

$54.49 including sales tax and tip a total for the day of $78.24 which is much more than the $37.99 it cost (even better as both trips are with free dining plan :sohappy: )

So far it has only been offered as a trial to those who just vacationed to get them back later this year. But as far as I know it has not been open to the public yet.

I was lucky enough to be down in December and able to book my trip with the free dining for september, I'm totally psyched.
