Yes, that's right (where a children's menu is offered -- obviously at a buffet, it's all the same food for everybody). So if you use 2 adult TS credits at Kona Cafe and save an extra child TS credit, you and/or your husband wouldn't be able to make use of that credit later on for yourselves -- you can only use it for your son. You can always, however, mix-and-match (e.g., if you're out of adult TS credits but have child ones left over and are dining at a TS restaurant, you can pay OOP for you and DH, and use the DDP for your son. Just make your intentions clear to the server at the outset.)

I thought that while it is intended that certain of the credit be used for child TS meals, ultimately it is just a bucket of TS credits that you get so if you had any left over at the end, no one would know if they were adult or child TS credits. Has that changed now? We haven't had any family members that qualify as children for too many years now to know for sure.

I'm afraid not -- that's only true of the deluxe dining plan.

On the regular dining plan, TS credits are differentiated. On each receipt you get, you'll see a printout of your remaining credits, with TS adult credits and TS child credits listed separately. You won't be permitted to use a child TS credit to order from the adult menu at an a la carte restaurant, or to gain admission for an adult to a buffet/family style restaurant. The most you can hope for is that at an a la carte TS restaurant, you or your DH could use a leftover child TS credit to order a meal from the children's menu.
