Dining Plan - Is Deluxe worth it?

Personally, no. Even the regular DDP is no longer worth it for my family, now that my turning-10-year-old son will be considered an "adult" for dining plan purposes.

We love food, but: (1) we don't visit WDW often, and don't want to spend more than 2-3 hours each day eating, total, because that would cut into our touring time too much -- we prefer to have some cereal or a granola bar for breakfast at our hotel, grab a quick CS lunch later in the day, perhaps have a snack in the afternoon, and have one nice TS dinner in the evening; (2) I refuse to pay more for a dining plan than I'd spend for what I actually want to eat out of pocket, and by the same token, I refuse to spend more money on a dining plan just so I can "break even" or even save a tiny amount on food and other accoutrements (e.g., refillable mugs, etc.) that is going to go to waste; (3) I hate the pressure and limitations of trying to "get my money's worth" out of a dining plan, which generally requires that you avoid all 2-credit restaurants and select only from the most expensive 1-credit TS places, not to mention ordering giant fountain drinks and desserts at every meal; and (4) DH and I both strive to control our weight, and a week's worth of 2 TS meals per day is far more calories than we want or need -- --we'd look like a couple of sumo wrestlers by the time we were ready to head home.

I know that millions of visitors purchase the deluxe dining plan every year and love it for the convenience of prepayment, and I respect their views. I just think that for someone like me, who prioritizes cost savings, flexibility in choosing restaurants, touring efficiency and generally healthful food choices, it would never remotely be worth it.

but I just can't do that much desert.

This is a common statement as I read these, and for me, it is a foreign concept.. growing up, we had some sort of desert with every dinner at home.. it wasn't always extravagant, sometimes it was a couple of Oreos (or the generic store brand equivalent.. ).

We didn't always get it when we went out, but pretty much every dinner at home was topped off with something sweet.. I say, bring it on!

one thing I noticed on our last trip, some of the TS deserts are getting pretty small.. 2 that stood out were at the Wave and at the Captain's Grill. Both were pretty small size wise. They are still good quality, but a lot smaller than the cupcakes or parfaits from QS places.. (don't forget you can use your desert credit at a QS for anything that is a snack credit, including a bottle of water to take with you..)

But at the Wave, they let me use my desert credit to get a salad. I'm not sure if many (if any other) places do that, but it was a nice option to have.

I love desert. I just don't need my own, or at every meal. Getting through 1/2 chicken, cornbread, barbecue beans, and a large coke zero left me staring at my Flame Tree chocolate mousse with hatred.

We did deluxe last trip at my husbands request. We ended up liking it as Everthing is paid up front and we only had to tip out of pocket. My kids were 4 and 2 so we had them share a kids meal plus they would eat off of our plates. We love to eat at WDW and will do 2 sit downs a day though.

I get that.. and maybe that is a different argument.. the desert options at many of the QS places are.. let's just say they are lacking imagination.. For the most part, they aren't anything to write home about.. On a hot day, I had the similar plate at Fairfax Fare at HS, and got the bottled water option in leu of whatever generic cupcakes they were offering there..

For me, for the moment, the regular DDP is fine. It would be very difficult to break even, let alone come out ahead on the QS plan, and (as evidence in this thread) there are several opinions on whether or not the DDX plan is worth it.. They may be scaling back what is included, but at least this year, they opened up some options that haven't formally been there in the past. (the bottled water thing for one was huge for us)

We use the Deluxe Plan every trip!! This was the first year our son was an "adult" in Disney standards and it work fablous. We tend to love the signature restaurants and late nights so we normal only eat breakfast a few days. However we enjoyed eating a QS meal as a late night snack per say once we would get back to the resort. Also we drive so usually have snacks left over so we stock up for the ride home and to enjoy some Disney once we get home. I would highly recommend the Deluxe plan.

I have always come ahead $300-$515 dollars each trip by going with the Deluxe plan. So in my eyes it is worth it. But it does depend on where you eat.

There is no way the deluxe dining plan would ever be a "deal" for us. We usually stay 8-9 nights and there are 4 of us(our 2 kids are teens). At almost $112/night that would be around $4000 just in food for our trip. We love food, especially good food. My youngest always gets the filet right along with us but there is no way we could eat 3 full meals including an appetizer each plus dessert, even using 2 credits for a deluxe, that would fill us up. Not that I would hate going there, it is just more food then we can physically add to our bodies. Stomachs are not that big, I have no idea how anyone can eat that much food in a day, every day.

Just an fyi, ddp will allow you to get an appetizer and salad in lieu of a dessert.
In fact, when we had our meal at San Angel for the CP (which is 2 TS credits) they allowed me to get 3 apps instead of app, dinner, and dessert. So I was able to get soup, salad, and a shrimp cocktail of which I put the shrimp on my salad. I still couldn't eat it all, but was really happy with my lunch...

Unless DDP is 'free', it's best to do no plan whatsoever IMHO.

Eat what you want (maybe multiple appetizers & salad instead of an entree - did that at Kona Cafe once). Where you want (perhaps including places that don't accept DDP). Perhaps at some places that actually accept walk-ins (like Marrakesh for lunch).

I loved the idea of the meal plan and with kids I firmly believe you can make it work, i.e., load up on Character meals. With that said, Disney now considers my 10 year old daughters adults which is ludicrous. I know ever child is different, but there's no way my kids can eat an adult meal every day , every meal

I ran the numbers thanks to
Disney Dining Calculator
and
Seeyarealsoon

Basically I came out ahead by paying for the meals out of pocket then the meal plan. YMMV but based on our wants, plans and appetites, the meal plan was not a good option for us

Edit:
Don't forget gratuities are not included with the meal, so you need to factor in that cost to your budget.

Try to go when they offer free dining. We just had that in December and it was awesome. And then whatever I charged on my Disney Visa, I paid off at the end of the trip with my gift cards that I purchased at Target, so basically I got 5% off of whatever I charged!!! And as I am a dessert lover, I do admit, twice a day was a bit much ... but I loved it!!! LOL

Might be cheaper for you to just do it all out of pocket if your wife and you like the nice TS restaurants and drink.

When we did the dining plan, we usually did the Deluxe plan. Generally because we went during times that the dining plan was "free" so we paid a little to upgrade to deluxe. It wasn't terribly expensive since our son qualified for the "child" rate. Now that he is an "adult" (by Disney's standards), it's not worth it to do the Deluxe plan. My wife and I love most of the food at Disney, and planning our dining options is just as much fun for us as it is planning the entire trip. :) We're not foodies (hardly), but it's something we enjoy. We hardly ever finished everything (because it is a TON of food), but we did strategically used the credits so that we could do a bunch of 2-credit dinners/shows. We generally only spent 2 credits during lunch or breakfast (except for buffets or character meals e.g. Tusker House breakfast,Chef Mickey's breakfast, etc) then used the left overs to pay for 2-credit meals (CRT, California Grill, etc). We never paid for anything food-wise out of pocket when using the Deluxe plan. Plus we got to try a bunch of food that we might not ordinarily try if not for the Deluxe plan.

Now that our son is older, we pay for everything out of pocket. We don't order nearly as much food (generally no appetizers, and we will split dessert when we order it), but we enjoyed it when we had it.

I should add that we never really cared for QS meals. Nearly (if not entirely) all of our meals were table service.
