Dining Decisions

Disney Diners...I need some opinions.

Our last trip was a week in July in 2009. The next one is this July for 11 days and this time the dining situation is serious because its our honeymoon.

I'll be making alot of ADR's so I'll be asking for some serious input especially from those who have dined in WDW fairly recently.

Ok, here are some of the issues. Well, at MK first in this post.

Thinking about Tony's in MK. Went on and off for years but now I haven't been there in awhile. Apprehensive due to some reviews I've read lately. How is it? Specifically dinner. He can't have fish so that is the dealbreaker anywhere. And he is probably getting the steak, or the lasagna, or the pasta and meatballs, and I'm looking at the pasta with shrimp. How are they tasting lately? I'll be happy with a "decent" review, but I won't book it if the consenus turns out out to be: avoid at all costs.

Ok, looking into Liberty Tree Tavern just for lunch. Dinner not an option because we are just shooting for the sit-downs right now. How are the burgers, pilgrim's feast, crab dip, and tavern fried cheese lately? I've always had good experiences here but such a long time ago that it probably doesn't factor in anymore.

Also, I loved the Plaza in 2009. The cheesesteak when I went was awesome. Please tell me its still good! This place shouldn't be a problem because our sandwiches were good and when I looked around at other plates being delivered, they seemed good too. Fries were great so I hope it still holds.

I'll be inquiring about specific dishes at certain places because if they are not so good, I have to go to Plan B. And I have been going to WDW for years so I know not to expect gourmet, but I'm shooting for decent, and realize through experience, that some places can have a disasterous day or lenghty off periods where certain dishes or restaurants should just be steered clear of.

Actually, I have the menus open in another window as I type so I am prepared to make my ADR's next week. LOL!

Thanks so much!

My son, his gf and I ate at Tony's last summer - we have been to Disney many times and have always overlooked this place. I have to honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised. His gf was a picky eater and she didn't complain..:) I don't remember our meals because I DO remember the pistachio creme brulee - it was really good!

That is really good innovation of Disney Cruises. Actually their cruise ships are designed mostly for children and when parents board they almost forget about themselves and try to entertain only their children. So from the company made good move to give a rest of parents on board.

I agree with NickA. I think the lunches at liberty tree are good and the plaza has remained consistently good. I think Tony's needs a lot of work imo. Remember when you're at MK that it's just a quick hop on the monorail to do one of the resort restaurants on the loop. We do it all the time for dinners when we're at MK. You might want to check out those menus as well to give yourself more options and congratulations. There's nothing like a disneymoon.

Thanks so much guys!

And if anyone else has been to Tony's, Liberty, or Plaza recently and has some imput it would be so greatly appreciated.

Well, I feel good about booking Liberty and Plaza.

Tony's...eh. The game plan was to do a very Disney thing for my fiancee who has only been to WDW twice in his life and maybe do a first night honeymoon fun thing and make my reservations for Tony's during the parade.

I am probably going to count this out. Because from people's posts and countless reviews on the site, it really seems now that Tony's has way more bad reviews than good.

I can't book this place if people are not even sure it is palatable like some reviews have claimed.

Thanks! Going to the hotels for our first night dinner IS my Plan B. LOL!

Ok, how about Epcot?

Let me narrow it down:

San Angel in is out because we went there for our last trip and want to try some other places.

I am definitely booking Le Cellier because I can never pass that place up. I'm doing dinner this time because last trip we did lunch and it was awesome and the Disney honey loved it.

Not bothering with Tokyo dining because he can't have sushi and I have been to Mt. Fuji in Jersey so many times that if the place is your standard hibachi place than we need to go somewhere else.

How is Les Chefs lately? I've been there several times over the years for dinner but not recently. How is lunch and dinner lately? It's either steak or chicken most likely. And how would it compare now between dinner at Les Chefs and Bistro de Paris? Never been to Bistro but I always wanted to and it might be a very honeymoon thing to do. How's the steak at Bistro! LOL!

The reviews are scaring me at all of the Italian restaurants (Tutto and Via) I am Italian and eat very well in Jersey and New York so I'd rather go somewhere else if they are not that great. Last time I ate in in the Italy pavillion the restaurant was still called Alfredo's so I have no clue how its been lately.

Same thing with China. I do take out alot so if Nine Dragons is so-so, I'll go elsewhere.

Via - Can't see paying $16 for prosciutto and mozz when I can get it fresh, and spectacular quality on Arthur Ave., Bronx. Er, and cheaper.

Coral Reef is out because we went there last trip.

Garden Grill....such inconsistent reviews, but so many bad ones. Never ate there and I am still timid about this. I hem and haw and drag my feet on this one every trip.

Ok, two last thoughts. How is Akershus for Lunch? And we are thinking about Rose and Crown for lunch. But that is depending on whether or not somebody can tell me that the burger or chicken sandwich is ok.

Thanks so much!

Akershus

Let me first start off with some information about the two eaters that are recommended these places. I love food- you name it and I will eat or at least try it. My husband on the other hand is a chicken and rice kind of guy..
We recently went to Marrakesh for dinner and loved it... It jumped to one of out favorite places to eat in Epcot.
Rose and Crown is wonderful- ask to sit near the water.
Also my husband doesnt eat fish either but loves Toyko dinning- we do the sit down that over looks the water- it is so good and I love the view.
Have you thought about eating outside the parks? Some of our favorites are Portobello's a 11out of 10
We also went to Cat Cora's restaurant on the boardwalk for Breakfast and liked it so much we are going to go back for dinner
How about Kona Cafe- Great for any meal you choose to eat there.
Here are some other places that we are going to try because we have heard such great things about them-The Wave, The Brewery and Sanaa
good luck

would you happen to know/remember if portobello's accepts the disney dining plans?

Definitely.

I figured I should get some current takes on eating in MK and Epcot and then I plan to also eat in the hotels. And we are definitely hitting Downtown at least once. I know that I have to hit T-Rex just to do it because I have never eaten there. Also, dinosaurs are cool! LOL!

I keep hearing great things about Portobello. Never went there so I should check it out. It was my understanding that it wasn't so good in recent years and it is really great now after a menu revamp. I have eaten at Ragland so that is out. And I went to Paradiso 37 last trip and it was a disaster for us so that is on the chopping block for now. The Rainforest is out because that is where we will eat at AK and I have been to the one in DTD.

DHS is easy. The Sci-Fi for Lunch and maybe 50's for Lunch. 50's for dinner is out because that was another disaster for me in 2009. A shock, because it was better when I went a few times over the years. But I will go back one day because I can't hold one item on the menu against them. Sadly, the Derby is out because when I checked the menu there is nothing he would eat. Meat and potatoes guy. A bit disappointed that I am seeing negative reviews for Mama Melrose. Never went there, always wanted to, but its not looking good on the threads lately.

I am staying at the Yacht and Beach so I figure for hotel dining, between those two, the Boardwalk, and the Swan and Dolphin all nearby I should have some nice places to eat.
