Difficult ADRs for party of two

While I've mentioned briefly in one other post, I felt this deserved it's own thread/discussion.

I don't know how many have noticed this (you probably haven't unless you are just a party of two), but I do find it frustrating...

WDW's dining reservation system seems to look at how many are in a party and what tables are available for the specifc number of people in the party rather than just looking for any open table (as most restaurants do).

For example...let's say a WDW restaurant that accepts ADRs has a table capacity breakdown like this:
5 two-person tables
25 four-person tables

If a party of two tries to make a reservation at the above restaurant but all of the two-person tables are reserved, the WDW reservation system is going to say that no tables are available even if there are plenty of four-person tables still available.

This is rather frustrating as in restaurants that have only two-tops, there are often only very, very few two-top tables and couples are basically shut-out from reserving any other tables that may still be open.

I'm not asking that a table for six or ten be held just for two people, but at least the next table up should be available. It's frustrating to try and try and try to reserve a place for two people with nothing open, but then look for a table for a party or 3 or 4 and plenty of times are suddenly open for the same time-frame at the same restaurant. (I'm sure the same thing happens for parties of four being told there is nothing available even though five or six-person tables are open).

I know WDW restaurants are pretty busy so I guess they can refuse reservations for a party of two for a four-person table or a party of four for a six-person table, but it is very frustrating and I don't know of many other restaurants that do this. I guess it is about maximizing profits and packing in as many as possible into each restaurant, but it is especially difficult given the very, very few two-person tables I've seen in some of the restaurants.

(In restaurants that only have tables that seat four or more, a party of two CAN reserve those, but in the restaurants that have two-tops, those looking for ressies can only specifically reserve those).

Has anyone else trying to get ADRs as a couple had this same experience where a reservation for two seems nearly impossible but look for a party or 3 or 4 and then reservations are available?

I'm currently in the day by day process of booking for two in October (during food and wine festival) and some restaurants I'm getting several selections a hour to choose from. However for spots like California grill, o'hana, and yachtsman I'm able to still have availability but not near the time I was hoping for. I don't see it being that we have just a party of two but rather it is just extremely busy and those are popular places.

I can't book 180+10 because we are staying at the dolphin, so I already have a huge disadvantage when it comes to booking. But never noticed if there is availability if I changed my table to 4.

Every now and then, I'll come across this issue. Example: a couple of years ago, I couldn't get a well timed ADR at 'Ohana for a party of 4, but there was a perfectly timed ADR for a party of 6. However, in most cases I found it to be significantly easier to book for a party of 2. Maybe it has to do with the restaurants I was looking at, but I've done my parents' ADRs several times and I was honestly jealous of how much easier it was to book for just them.

A word of advice...while it's a bit of a pain, you can book that ADR for the larger number and then call to have the number decreased to the proper party size.

I've never had a problem booking a party of 2...and we went in September 2013, October 2013, New Year's 2014, March 2014, and have another trip for September 2014.
