Different way to share vids and pictures

Something i thought about was starting a WDWMagic chat room on WinMX so that we can share freely without getting Steve in trouble on here or going through the hell of IRC. WinMX isn't all full of spyware like Kazaa and it's pretty easy to use. Gimme some feedback on this, if the idea gets popular enough.. we could be on the way to easy trades. If ya'll wanna check it out and then comment, go to www.winmx.com and download it and try it out.

Ya know.. that's a good question.. i have no idea. Never really had a reason to think about it as i'm a windows(gag) user. Did you try to DL the program?

Winmx is cool..but there are many problems with it...

First and formost..QUEING...good luck getting a file without waiting 5 hours for it...

second...VIRII..yep..winmx is the #1 spreader of virus's on the net (even more than kazaa)

Third...you MUST update software..if you dont..then it wont load. This is bad for dialup users..since the software isnt exactly SMALL.

Forth...not exactly user friendly..the interface is a tad bit intimidating for a newbie

Fifth...A lot of...uh...since this is a family forum..i wont say the word that comes to my mind..but..a lot of "mean people" are there who will cut off downloads if you dont have a file they are looking for.

NowInc.. that's the idea of a WDWMagic room is so we don't cut each other off. And as long as we're running clean puters, viruses shouldn't be a prob either. I think it's pretty simple

Direct Connect would probably be better for a small hub like this and clients have been made for several non-Windows platforms. It's much more open than WinMX and the download system tends to work better. The only problem is we'd need someone with a Unix shell to run the hub.

Curious.. what's wrong with the IRC channel? Anyone is welcome to stop in and and grab whatever they like. You can also pretty easily share your media.. especially with windows if using Invision2.0. The fileserver built into it is pretty basic barring no firewall probs on your end in the way. And if you don't want to/can't run a server all the time, Popkid would be happy to give you access to dump whatever you like on his server for the masses to enjoy. I know people that have never used irc. I had them setup mirc, install invision2.0 on top and within 10 minutes of getting a feel for it they were downloading, chatting and answering trivia. Popkid even setup a guide that makes it even easier to learn how to work the system. That is at http://www.popkid.com/disneycentral

If irc isn't your cup of tea you can visit the binary newsgroup on USENET called alt.binaries.multimedia.disney
Some real gems are posted in that group if you keep a watchful eye. Warning though.. there's a bit of a learning curve to accessing and downloading from USNENET (much like there is to irc), but it really is not a big deal if you sit down and read a tutorial for a good 10-20 mins. It's worth it. A good place to learn how to use USNET is at http://www.timdoc.com The funny part about USENET is that it has been around since the Gulf War and most ISPs offer newsgroup service.. they just fail to tell their customers. It's been around so long, it is LOADED with tons of media (assuming your provider doesn't block binary newsgroups), no waiting on a queue line to get the goods and it can help you accumulate gigs of digital media quickly if you have a fast connection to one. One possible pitfall of USENET with it is your provider possibly expiring the files before you can download all the pieces and assemble the files back together (retention). I use the program Xnews from http://xnews.newsguy.com to connect to USENET. It's completely free and relatively easy to use after some experience.

There are pros and cons to all of the media sharing methods, but I recommend the above two because they have been around longer than this P2P stuff and are pretty well supported if you are willing to sit down and read several guides and websites.

i had no idea people felt so strongly against IRC... it's a bit odd to me tho, because ever since i've gotten the hang of IRC, direct connect, kazaa, winMX have all just been gathering dust on my system...

i admit, i was completely lost when i first started with it, but i searched google for some how too's, asked questions in the channel, and it all just clicked :)

i'm not trying to put down other attempts to set up file sharing for disney media(the more the merrier, right?) it's just dissapointing when we've already looked at these options, thought IRC would be best (may or may not be true), and went thru the trouble to set it all up (thanks to disneyjedi for all the hard work).

the IRC channel has grown slowly and steadily... new servers pop up in the channel all the time, and we've definately got a great crew of regulars... not too mention everyone who's been hard at work encoding their private disney home videos to share...

well, just my two cents really... if you do get any disney media hubs or channels or rooms or what nots going, be sure to let me know.. i'll be sure to come check it out

I never found IRC to be complicated, but I am and old command line programmer. Most people who don't even know what DOS is might find it challenging. But the Invision interface makes it point and click simple.

As with anything, new is cahllenging but once you do it, it becomes very simple.

If there is another site (winmx or other) I will probably check it out but I currently support through IRC and Newsgroups and that is enough for me. I wouldn't have time to support through a 3rd location.

Hi, everyone!

I finally got mIRC to work in my PC!!!:sohappy: It seems to me that it was a windows problem, and as soon as I got back to my old windows 98 everything worked fine.

Yeah, I had (and I am still having) a hard time with IRC, as it is difficult for me to understand some of the vocabulary, and nobody seems to know anything about this here in Brazil... But thanks to the help of the guys here and at Disney Central, I managed to start the download of my first file :sohappy: , and I guess everything will be fine now. It just takes a little bit of patience and faith!!!

POPKID, thanks for everything, and sorry for bothering you sooooo much...
