Don't forget they should have the new lands ready off site and just flown and dropped into place... That way they can open in less then 24 hour time
Exactly! It's what Universal does.

This is one of my fears... Unless Universal actually blows us out of the water with that third park by 2021, there might not be a reason why Disney would keep pouring money to DHS considering it will probably get a popularity bump due to the addition of SWL and TSL.I would guess 2018...with SWL opening for the 50th in 2021. I have no faith they will ever get to Phase 3.
the first two phases will give the turnstiles a bump and they will say "Success!"... and that will be that.
do you know when it will? Seems weird that they've closed the meet and greets and Osbourne lights on a set day and no progress has been made the next day.

I really hope you are wrong, but I do know why you feel the way you do. Iger won't be in power anymore so maybe we could be a lil optimistic.
That might actually be considered a positive by Disney: the area would be easier to re-theme if needed and easier to blend into other areas or attractions (as a generic city backdrop). To me those two photos don't tell you anything. If I looked at that first picture I would have no clue thats Monstropolis from Monsters Inc. The second photo only tells you that because it is populated with the monsters. Remove them and it could be anything. So Disney would have to create a city and then populate it with monsters that walk around which I don't see happening.
I'd normally lean to them doing phase 1 and phase 2 and then saying, "Look, sales are up.. Let's just scrap the rest, it's good enough...," and that would be the end of it. There's a history of that with WDW management. It makes good business sense, after all.
The one thing that they may change their reasoning is that Universal isn't thinking like that. Universal is thinking in terms of, "How can we wow people?," and, "We really knocked that last one out of the park! Let's do more of that!" They didn't build Harry Potter and think, "Sales are up. Done." No, they built it and are building more, refreshing more, replacing more, doing more.
I kind of wonder about the new Toy Story area at DHS. A lot of it seems like well-themed off-the-shelf rides. While not a crime to do so, and the parks have done so since the beginning (that's all Dumbo is), it'd be kind of nice to see something really well done and well thought out like the classics: Pirates, Haunted Mansion, etc. That leads me the other bit with Pandora over in AK and the hopes that maybe we'll get something like that over there. I still don't think it belongs in AK but it would be cool to see some new, imaginative ride/attraction.
For me, as a frequent guest/AP holder at WDW over the years, Universal is pulling at my wallet more and I'm more excited about what they're doing, even though part of their parks are still kind of 'meh' to me, than what Disney is doing. I can look at Disney parks and think of entires areas that are 'meh' and have been for some time.
I don't look at this expansion as 2 off the shelf rides, I look at it as 4 new rides, 2 off the shelf (in TSL) and 2 not (in SWL), I think this provides a good balance.
Does it seem like the Slinky Dog coaster is off-the-shelf? There is a section in the ride that looks indoors--I wonder whether there will be some AA's, etc. in there. I mean, essentially it's a coaster, yes, in a themed environment. That's what SDMT is, aside from the 'mildly innovative' 'almost-swinging' mine train car design. I had the thought that Slinky would be "plussed" in some way--and it looks longer than the Dwarfs coaster as well. Any thoughts or actual info on that?

I think the Slinky Dog will have some nice elements, but will it be themed any more than Gadgets Go Coaster or The Great Goofini? I am not sure, and I think the only "indoor" portion is the covered station area...So, I would not expect too much. The Green Men ride also could be amazing, but it seem like they are just doing a canopy cover over it...a roof, but not enclosing and fully theming it...another missed opportunity...I think you could add Barnstormer and Gadget's Go Coaster to that list as well. Very lightly themed.
I mean, outside of traveling shows or the cheapest of boardwalk amusement parks, most places that use "off the shelf" rides are going to have some decorative elements.
That said, once you are putting a ride indoors with effects and scenery, you've moved beyond the "off the shelf" level. Slinky Dog looks ot have a lot of custom made elements to fit into the theme and I probably wouldn't consider it "off the shelf".
Yes but does it need to be fully enclosed when it's surrounded by the rest of Toy Story Land? You're only going to see the other toys in Andy's backyard.I think the Slinky Dog will have some nice elements, but will it be themed any more than Gadgets Go Coaster or The Great Goofini? I know linking to other blogs is generally frowned upon, but this tidbit was interesting.
It has been reported that the props around the coaster will interact with the coaster cars themselves. So imagine going around Rex Animatronic and him waving and saying Hi! Or the army men salute you when you go by...blah blah blahso you will see all the same fiberglass oversize toys you are walking around the whole time...I don't know...It's been done and done and done...and just doesn't seem engaging...but perhaps I am in a minority and everyone is excited about fiberglass oversize toys and giant christmas lights...
I am expecting quite a lot more theming than the Barnstormer, but as there won't be any "rockwork" it won't feel as themed as Seven Dwarves, Big Thunder or Everest but more than Barnstormer or Primevil as there will be plenty of 3D theming.
A boat ride in Star Wars? Very surprising, yet I can totally see them doing that.
