Does merchandising success necessarily mean attraction success/failure?
(Aside: Cars 2 was #89 on the list of top 100)
That's the question that has been driving this discussion. And the answer is no, merchandise does not mean attraction success or failure.Haunted Mansion doesn't even have a giftshop after the ride, yet it's still one of the most popular attractions in Disney.
A popular brand such as Cars can only draw people's attention to a new attraction. If the attraction isn't a success, that had nothing to do with the brand itself, it had to do with the experience on the ride. Compare Toy Story Land in Paris to Toy Story Mania. Same franchise, two very different experiences, one being much better than the other. But in both areas, they sell the same franchise merchandise. There are numerous examples and I could go on and on, but it seems like some are set in their views and I'm not going to change them, so there isn't much sense in trying.
