Wait, wouldn't a dolphin that cuts himself attract sharks?

The reason I brought up Gus the polar bear was because I noticed his odd behavior long before it became a media sensation. I wasn't the only one. Many people would observe and say, "Why is he doing that?" Kids such as myself. This was decades ago. It was later determined that he was suffering from depression. Some "animal mind reader" diagnosed him. I wasn't an expert then. I'm not an expert now.

He had a tumor on his thyroid, which could cause lethargic behavior and also depression, I guess. However, I will take that medical diagnosis over the "animal mind reader". I know this is an unpopular opinion (where is my puffin when I need him) but, I am fine with animals in captivity in scenerios such as aquariums, the zoo, etc. The only problem I have is the circus. Those animals, in my opinion, are treated cruely, kept in confined spaces and have no quality of life.

Like I said, I know I will get flack over it but, the animals do not seem to be suffering and they are well cared for, just my opinion.

There is a huge difference in a domestic animal vs an animal in the wild. My dog, in no way compares to a shark in captivity. Put that dog in a cage and leave him there day in and day out and you might have something.
Are you a vegetarian? I'm going to go out on a limb and say you most likely are because of your feelings on this subject. I really do get where you are coming from but we live in society where we raise animals to kill and eat them. It seems weird when we start to place some animals above others in a class system. Let's raise and kill cows but we are monsters if we keep some animals in a replica of their environment and feed/care for them. To me, and this is my opinion, it doesn't seem so bad for them to live in captivity, again that is my opinion.

Hey guys ;) I know there was a thread awhile back about Epcots dolphins, and I thought you may be interested in this. I submitted a question online to Disney asking where they have gotten their dolphins, and a real person called me!!

First off, the fact that someone called gives me so much respect for them. Not many companies would do that. Anyway, the girl on the phone told me that they have 4 dolphins. 1 is a retired Military dolphin, and the other 3 are rehabilitated. She continued to inform me on all their research studies with them, and assured me that they were not "circus" animals.

This has made me feel much more at ease about the situation, and I hope it does for those who were worried about it as well.

The US and Russia have used military dolphins. There's a lot of secrecy and no real definitive actions. They claimed that they were trained to kill (Russia) rumours also said they could lay underwater mines, find enemies and seek & destroy... With sonar jamming devices etc being tested on them to see if it worked. Believe what you want with that claim...I doubt that went on

The US claim they did none of this so what did they actually use them for? I wonder if this is a U.S military dolphin (retired) and what they actually used it for. I wonder if this is the depressed dolphin

(Please feel free to correct me I don't want to cause arguments)

Rehabilitated dolphins? "Yes, Boomer here was an alcoholic who used to frequent party boats, doing cheap tricks in hopes that someone would toss some whiskey overboard. Squeaky used to mug tourists to buy painkillers. Panzer over there is one tough dolphin: after years of wallowing in the most downtrodden shoals of the Pacific, he's finally kicked his addiction to meth."

I know what it really means, but my mind prefers to veer in other directions...

Actually, dolphins get up to some crazy stuff. In short, I was watching Planet of the Apes the other night, and when they get to the line, "Beware the beast Man, for he alone kills for sport, for , for greed", I was thinking, "No, dolphins do that too." Just do a search on Cracked.com for "dolphins" and prepare to have your mind BLOWN.

Has anyone ever noticed the depressed dolphin that just floats listlessly in the tank? If you go to the dolphin section look far back and up and you will see a dolphin near what I think is a gate. I was in the aquarium for a good hour and the dolphin never moved from its spot.

Another dolphin swam about, but followed the same exact pattern throughout. Back and forth, back and forth, I could have drawn lines across the glass and the dolphin would have stayed within them.

If anyone is (was) familiar with the plight of Gus the Depressed Polar Bear at the Central Park Zoo here in NYC, it's similar type behavior: neurotic and compulsive.

This isn't a clown fish swimming in circles. These are beautiful, intelligent, majestic creatures.

And no, I haven't seen "Blackfish" yet.
You should really watch BLACKFISH. It is completely one-sided but has many valid points. It will make you sick. If you really want to ruin your life, watch EARTHLINGS too . Don't get me wrong, Sea World has incredible merits, my son goes to camp there every year, it does wonders for the environment and animals hurt or displaced by humans, research and education, but containing whales, dolphins, sea lions- any way you look at it- is WRONG. You cannot recreate a habitat for creatures THAT BIG in a park. Of COURSE they are neurotic and depressed! Go live in your bathroom for 30 years- feeling happy?
