Deluxe Resorts

I was looking into going down for Christmas 2006. My first thought was to stay at the Grand Floridian. I had sticker shock at the price $349 a night (value season, 2005 rates). Port Orleans is only $149 a night same time frame. We are staying for 2 weeks . We are going to roll our 20th anniversary trip into this as we have never been to Disney at Christmas time. We originally were considering the Polynesian or GF as we have never stayed there. But there is a lot of things we can do with a $2400 savings on the hotel alone. We have never been to PO either. We were wondering what you all thought on the subject. We know we can probably get better rates for AP, AAA, etc. but this is a huge price difference.

I noticed that you've stayed at the WL before. Have you looked into that, its the least expensive of the Deluxes. I understand the Christmas decorations are very beautiful.

You are staying for 2 weeks, why not split the trip between Resorts. (I haven't done that but alot of people swear by it).

You may want to contact Pam at Kingdom Konsultants (a member here & a sponser) she works wonders.

I also thought of Wilderness Lodge. The standard rooms are $199/night, and since you are going during value season, you may be able to upgrade at check-in.

WL is our favorite resort, and we will be seeing it for the first time at Christmas this year. I can't hardly wait!

The Wilderness Lodge is beautiful at Christmas. My wife and I honeymooned there in 2002. When we arrived they did not have the decorations up yet. One morning we woke up and the huge Christmas tree and other decs were up. I love the WL, and hope to get to stay there again.

We have stayed at po fq twice and were considering it again for $ reasons on our upcoming trip. Since we had the extra money this trip we decided on wl. I love pofq and would highly recomend it. We really love the boat ride to dd.

Were you planning on Christmas week or is it 2 weeks in Dec.? There are a lot of options as far as resorts go. If you want to save $$ and have a fantastic trip, contact me and we will get the ball rolling. I will crunch the numbers and watch for specials and I offer free itinerary services to my clients.
Whether you choose POFQ or the GF, you will have a wonderful time.
I will help you make your 20th anniversary very special.

It may pay to buy annual passes now and use the discount when booking the rooms. For what you'd pay for the length of stays you could get premium annuals and enjoy HUGE savings, you could even use the money you saved for a trip later in the year...and your tickets are already paid for!

I would also vote for splitting your stay between resorts. Its a fun experience and they will do all the luggage transfer for you. I know of folks staying as long as you are that have done four hotels! They consider it part of the entertainment.

If you get annual passes you can get a big discount on the deluxe resorts right now. I just booked for the week of christmas and got the Contemporary for $150 a night in a garden wing.

Good deal! We stayed in the Contemporary Garden Wing a few years back...had a nice quiet beach with a big hammock just outside the sliders.
Have fun.

Welcome aboard!

I would also try the Dolphin or Swan hotels. I've stayed at the Dolphin twice and they have the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on! You can walk to Epcot International gateway & Boardwalk and take the boat to MGM. You have more options staying in this area and have great nightlife entertainment only walking distance from your room. I stayed on the first floor in the Dolphin and we had a patio that overlooked Epcot. It was great to eat breakfast on the patio and open the door and walk directly from my room to Epcot. This is one of my favorite hotels.

I just wanted to mention that Birnbaum's guide suggests PO Riverside, the Mansion rooms, as a satisfying alternative to GF. As you say, the money saved can be used for a lot of other fun things.

We usually stay at Deluxe resorts (GF, WL, BW, Y&BC) and our last trip we could not afford it so we tried out POFQ. While the theming at PO in general is quite nice, you get what you pay for. The rooms were comparable, but not nearly as nice as Deluxe. In general we found the maintenance of the grounds to be sub-par, and the options for dining and entertainment were very limited (there is a boat that runs to DTD but it shuts down too early to really enjoy it IMO.) For my money, the Grand Floridian is easily the most beautiful resort in WDW. Just being there always gives me a sense of awe and relaxation. The grounds are beautiful, as are the buildings and the beach. Since the Polynesian is similar in price, I recommend against it. I know some people swear by it, but it has been by far the worst hotel we've stayed at in WDW. We hated it so much we actually switched over to the GF. The Boardwalk and Y&BC are also similar in pricing. They aren't quite as lavish, but they have a wonderful charm all their own and their location is tops. Nothing quite matches the feeling of laying out on the beach, staring out at the majestic boardwalk, or vice versa and lounging on the boardwalk and enjoying the reverse view! This area has by far the most entertainment options in a resort area, and the location makes it every bit worth the price. Being within walking or boating distance to both MGM and EPCOT is an awesome feature. The WL is also wonderful, but I won't go on about it since you've already stayed there.

As far as xmas decorations, I've been at all of the above (minus POFQ) at christmas time and they all have wonderful displays, but the best is hands down the GF. Honestly though, the ammount of money you're talking about saving is a big deal. Maybe to you a hotel is just a bed in a room. It's not like any of these places is a slummy motel, they are all Disney Quality. My advice is to think about what you want in a hotel, then figure which is best. Where do you want to be located? What kind of ammenities do you want? What kind of things do you want to do? What theme do you like best? You may also want to think about what you would do with the extra money you'd save and weigh the importance of that vs the hotel.

One last thing to consider might be the Fort Wilderness cabins. These are good options for long stays because they have kitchens which can save big money if you use them.

Regardless of where you stay, you will still be at WDW, and I'm sure your trip will be wonderful. Have fun planning!
