Deluxe resort losing a star?

I heard from a friend of mine who works at one of the resorts that one of the deluxe resorts might be losing a star rating. Right now I believe the Poly, Contemporary, and the Grand Floridian are all 5 star resorts and she said she was told one of them was in the process of being demoted by one star. Anyone heard about this?:veryconfu

Unfortunately no Disney resorts have been able to achieve 5 star status. It has been widely said that the critics that develop the rankings refuse to give the resorts the top ranking because of the number of children staying there.

Sorry... someone has given you at least partially incorrect information. None are 5 diamond.

Grand Floridian - 4 diamond
Contemporary - 3 diamond
Poly - 3 diamond

Edited for correct terminology... AAA uses diamond, not stars.

Not sure about the star rating, but the AAA Diamond ratings for resorts in '06 are as follows:

Pop and All Star- 2 Diamond

CBR, CSR, POFQ, POR, WL, AKL, OKW, SS,Boardwalk, Poly, Contemporary- 3 Diamonds

Yacht and Beach Club, GF- 4 Diamond

I think, IMO, the star rating system is skewed to favor the non-resort type hotels. If you look at the amenities and service and value you receive at a Hilton compared to a WDW Deluxe, the WDW resort hotel would win hands down. Just to compare, the Hilton at Lake Buena Vista is a 5-star if I remember correctly, and I feel that IMO I definately receive better treatment at the Boardwalk than when I stay at the Hilton(not that the Hilton's bad...)

You're correct... AAA uses diamond ratings. Star ratings are done by other organizations and they tend to be interchanged. Thanks!

More information about Diamond / Star ratings. AAA Diamond... Travelocity Star.

Isn't the highest AAA rating 4 diamonds??

No, actually there are select resorts which receive 5 Diamond status... alot of the Ritz properties are five Diamond. In fact, four of the five Five Daimond properties in the state of FL are Ritz-Carlton.

in the UK brocures for disneyworld they rate them as:

PC and All Stars- 3*

CSR,CBR,PORS,POFQ- 4*

AKL- 5*
CR- 5*
Boardwalk- 5*
Yacht and Beach Club- 5*
Polynesian- 5*
Wilderness Lodge- 5*

GF- 5* plus which means its really expensive

swan and dolphin- 4 to 5*

fort wilderness campground, DVC are not really in brocures but on websites and they are normally rated- 4 to 5*

For me, stars are irrelevent. I've stayed in non-Disney 5 star hotels that dont even compare to a stay at a Disney value or moderate.

All the Disney resorts are top notch places to stay, and they can be ranked either 1 star, or 100 stars, it makes no difference.

How relevent are the star rating to people? Do you even consider it? For me, a personal recommendation, or a previous stay counts far more.

The problem with the star ratings is, (in the USA) they aren't given by any central authority. A hotel with a star rating typically means AAA hasn't reviewed it yet. The hotel will consult AAA guidelines and assign themselves stars depending on what they think they deserve.
[EDIT]-- If the hotel specifies "Mobil Stars" then those are rewarded by a similar authority to AAA.

I agree that stars are not relevant and all disney resorts are top notched. However, I do not go by personal recommendation because someone's idea of a good place and standards, may not be the same as mine. For instance, I wouldn't even consider staying at the Contemporary until it is completely rehabbed and I thought this more than six years ago about the place when I stayed there, Pop is much better even on its worst day.

I heard on one of the podcasts (think it was MouseTunes) that GF was actually recently downgraded to 3 diamonds and YC/BC is the only resort on property that is 4.

I could be wrong though.

$$$

I will say this...the resorts are a bit costly!

Even with my FL resident and Passholder discount...we pay quite a bit more than we would at a non Disney resort.

Nonetheless...I will continue staying at Disney resorts because I enjoy the experience...and I think that's what Disney is counting on.

Just have to agree with people that state that their resorts are quite pricey for the amount of room you get.

I've always been told no WDW resort would get 5-star not because of children, but because of the lack of dress code.

Interesting, but I agree it's largely irrelevant; I give much more creedence to my own experience and the detailed experiences of those I come into contact with, not what some guy decides by looking at a spreadsheet.

I've NEVER READ THAT, I guess it's possible. I have heard the Disney resorts are far too accessible to non-guests to be highly rated. I've also read that 24 hour room service is a requirement.

Disney is about "pretend" and theming. We don't really go on a jungle cruise, train for a mission to mars or actually go on an African safari. The GF isn't really a 5 * resort, it's just themed like one.
