Del Toro's Haunted Mansion Movie Not Dead..

Brilliant, I can wait. Although the HM ride itself is kid friendly, it still definitely has an overall eeriness to it and that's how I think a movie inspired by it should be. The Eddie Murphy movie was just way too corny. Disney movies and rides are for kids and adults, and while I was entertained by the movie when I was little, as an adult I just can't get through it. I think Del Toro is gonna do a great job, rewrite to perfection, take all the time you need. Just give me a great movie based on my favorite attraction!

I liked the Murphy movie.

It's not bad but, the problem was Murphy's acting...He was being too kid friendly...I mean he got away with a few good lines in Mulan and Shrek but, for some reason it was only thing that was problematic for me...Also Don Knotts was to be the Caretaker in the film but, he cancelled and so the storyline had to be changed...

I disagree. Here is why I thought it was bad:
- Instead of focusing on the mysteries of the mansion and its residents, they focused on the curse. Because for some reason, Disney has decided that its movies need to have either curses or magic, even if curses and magic just don't belong. (looking at you Lone Ranger)

- Okay so we have a curse. I guess that's allowable because of ghosts. But the curse is downright stupid. Why would EVERYONE be cursed because just one guy being a racist, murdering ?
Surely they could have had the house built on a cemetery (like Poltergeist) or a tribal burial ground (like Pet Sematary) or something. That would have made sense.

- Hey guess what? The Haunted Mansion isn't haunted anymore! Yep. We lifted the curse because we went on a glorified scavenger hunt to find a key and a dress and blah-blah and everyone went to heaven except for the Mellomen Busts and Leota. So now it's just a house. The story is over.

- Eddie Murphy just isn't funny in live action movies anymore. His "comedic" roles these days seem to involve him running around like a frantic man-child. Thank goodness he only had one role in this movie.

- Too much padding. "Yo dawg, we heard you like the Haunted Mansion. So we put in stuff from the Haunted Mansion so you can remember the Haunted Mansion while you watch the Haunted Mansion".
Seriously...they shove everything they can from the ride into the movie just as little more than a cameo appearance. Even the Hithchiking Ghosts (celebrities in their own right and one of the major icons of the ride) have been reduced to 30 seconds of dumb crap.

- The "annoying children in peril" trope. Some movies can pull it off without too much of a mess. This is not one of them.

I really hope del Toro will remember that part of the Mansion's charm is not only its creepiness but its air of Victorian sensibility...it's shabby but stately, and many of its denizens may be scary but they're also genteel. The Mansion(s) were beautiful homes once. That's what makes them so melancholy - they've fallen from grace, and there's something kind of sad about that.

And I'd love it if the Hatbox Ghost wasn't evil - just mischievous - and turns out to be a friend to whoever the protagonist is in the movie. Sort of a cross between a debonair Vincent Price, and Beetlejuice.

Good news then, because Hatty will be played by none other than del Toro alum Doug Jones.

He's also done Disney.

Yeaaahhh I'm going to just leave this here where they blatantly use the "Curse" Word..;)

Ha! Ironically the same ghost actors from the film were used for a humorous DL Commercial...

And ever since, they shoehorn some silly curse or magic into almost every adventure movie they make.

And to be honest...PotC didn't really need a curse. Adventure movies don't need curses to exist.

This.

I couldn't have explained it any better.

So maybe the Eddie Murphy version could be shown to kids by their Haunted Mansion loving parents, and when they get older, they can see the del Toro version that will be scarier.

John Carter and Tron: Legacy didn't have any curses or magic, for what it's worth.

The Eddie Murphy version should be sent on rockets to the nearest black hole while on fire. I just watched it with my wife. It is corny, with terrible acting having very little to do with the actual haunted mansions and the stories that the cast members had made up. Cameos of attraction items or characters are thrown in haphazardly almost as an after thought. And Murphy's acting was the only horror of the film, he was literally disgusting. The story to me was just as bad as the overall movie. While the cast member stories explained the backstory, the movie version never fully told the audience why everyone else became ghosts. And while romping through the mansion and graveyard we very quickly see things we are familiar with but with absolutely no dwell time to appreciate it.

Disney released the movie because they thought they would hit on another franchise like Pirates. They were wrong and failed miserably. The film should never have been released.

It’s a tough balance, and I would be happy to report if we had the screenplay. We always feel like we are very close, but not yet. We have developed 50-60 pieces of art, We’ve developed maquettes of the Hat Box Ghost, over the body and face of Doug Jones, but we have not succeeded yet in cracking the screenplay.
