Question: When are points considered borrowed?

For example are points considered borrowed if your use year is in March and for 2021 you make a reservation in May of 2021?

As long as you make your reservation within that use year are they not considered borrowed?
Thanks for the help!

Borrowed points are those that are used for a reservation in the use year before the use year of the points.
Banked points are those that are used for a reservation in the use year after the use year of the points.

Your example doesn’t give enough information.

Here’s one that might help to explain.

You have a use year of March. That means every March, 100 points become available to use in your account.
We are currently in your 2020 use year.
You used all last year’s points for a stay in Oct 2020.

In January you booked for June 2020, using 175 points.
That uses all your 2020 points, and borrows 75 points from the following use year, 2021.

When you make the booking doesn’t matter, it’s when the vacation falls that determines what use year the points come from.

This answers my question. It’s all about when your reservation falls vs when you schedule the reservation.

For us, things are more complicated because we chose to cancel our reservation before it was automatically canceled for our own reasons, but that means the points we borrowed are now stuck in this use year and we will have to work to use them, but it does mean that we were able to borrow more than. 50% of next year's points...lol

Be careful. The points are being returned for any cancellation. I got mine back for a Christmas stay. It took over three weeks to happen, so don’t be surprised if they suddenly go back. But you may have cancelled before they instigated that policy, in which case you’ll be OK.
