Deadly Virus at WDW???

So so everyone knows, wearing a mask does very little to stop a virus. Yes they may prevent droplets from getting into the respiratory system, but there is no mesh developed that is small enough to prevent a virus from travelling through it.

And yes, basic hygiene is the best way to prevent it spreading.

we have special masks available to medical personnel to be used in isolation, but these aren't available the general public. Any barrier helps, but is not 100% effective.

rosie.ca thanks for the update.

Yep, I agree.

Theres very little point in worrying about it though. Do the basics and hope it steers clear of you.

You should just relax- it was only April fools joke – I know things are serious but if you worry too much than it eats away at your soul.

You Know, as far as I'm concerned, having to head for home after a ten day stay at WDW is pretty much a death sentence anyway. So if ya gotta go, you might as well "punch your ticket" at a place you love.

I just wanted to say, as most already know, you can catch SARS from anybody that has come in contact with it, not just people from the Oriental countries( as some people at my school believe).

Right now in Ontario, Canada, there is 1000s in quarantine, and 6 have died. 2 Toronto schools have been closed, and 1in the maratimes.

And for those who like to joke about it, the Ontaio Minister of Energy made a joke about SARS to the media at Queen's Park(the Ontario Legislature) which he is now regreting.

I agree - if you have to go I rather be at WDW!

EDIT: That wasn't quite clear enough--we live in a nation of fear! (just wanted to point that out)

Yeah I heard about this. My mom was going to Toronto this weekend but her boss told her that she shouldn't go because of it. Thank you! I don't want my mom to get sick:(

Relax...

There have been 60-some-odd cases in the United States... No one has died as a result of the virus (at least as of 10:45pm eastern time on 4/2/03 lol).

True and lets hope no one will die.

UPDATE!

Two separate cases have been confirmed in Florida, according to the News agencies down here in Miami FL. However, the location of the two infected individuals was not made available. All that is known so far is that these people are not tourist and are residents who recently traveled to one of the infected regions.

Okay let me clear some things up. This is direct from my homes resident M.D. my mom. Go figure, wash your hands and you'll be ok. Infection is from LARGE droplets aka, someone sneezes on you. This is a common sense prevention method. Just be smart, wash your hands. She also said, younger children and the elderly are more at risk. Also women with diabetes (sp?) Just thought I would try to provide some insight.

I tihnk the disease could easily spread in WDW

between long lines...parades...meals...and shows....even bus rides....
and especially if it strikes younger kids more....

I'm especially nevous because I know herds of oriental peope do travel to WDW...and now even Americans are ill....

BUT...I'd still go to WDW....I'm sure they're taking extra caution in this case...and I now the airlines are as well.....

I just make sure to carry lots of anti-bacterial (no-water) soap....
and not be paranoid....I'm sure a cure will be created by the time most of you travel.....

Or will we even make it that long...:dazzle: :dazzle:

Just kidding!

there are i believe 3 cases in canada of young children having it *they are a sick kids hospital and no as far as i know none of them have died* lets not forget that even if you get the illness doesn't mean you are going to die ... only a small percent of people have died of this and like i posted before i know for a fact 2 of them (in canada)were in their 70's and were gravely ill already .

if anyone should be freaking out over this it should be me because my mother and brother were actually in a hospital that had a sars case but i am not worried .
Sars could spread easily in disney if we didn't know about it but i believe that people are doing a pretty good job at controling the spread .

there is no sence in worrying i mean you can think about west nile or leprosy or ebola or the plague etc any of those things could break out ... are you likely to get sick from sars ? no not with the current state of things and if you do get sick will you die? not likely

so anyone going to disney my advice is ...don't even worry about it

Well said...

But SARS makes u worry and think....

It did spread so rapidly....well I mean its not all over every inch of the world....but has spread fast...."almost" like the common cold....you can't help but wonder if the coughing guy next to you recently traveled to SE Asia!!! :lookaroun :lookaroun

but I agree what rosie wrote....the odds are slim....

hugs disneydudette and coughs on her :) *eg* ...just kidding .
i think part of what is scaring people it that it is so publicized lately ... some of the media has made it seem a lot more scarey then it is and yes people being quarrentined is unsettling .
and if i have anymore sars news i will post it ... *what i am scared about is the drive home from work tonight... we have an ice storm... the roads are literally skating rinks*

Here is a little up date for anyone interested. 10% of the worlds SARs cases are located in Toronto or the Greater Toronto area. There are now around 170 cases. I found this to be pretty shocking. What is the most scariest about SARS is the fact that nothing is really known about it. All the things people have previously said are all just guesses. No one knows much which is very scary. It seems so likely that this will be heading to FLorida in a matter of time which is horrible and i really hope it doesn't!

i don't really find that shocking since it originated in asia and it came to toronto by an infected person who came from there .all people who have sars were either infected in asia, living with an infected person ,were hospital staff or in that hospital. It is not just running about wildly infecting people.
and even if a person was infected the survival rate is like 95%

And in a world of billions of people have a total of under 2000
cases is really not an epidemic at present time.

and it is more than just guesses these people working on sars are trained professionals who know more about bacteria and viruses then most people can imagine ,they do know a lot about sars already .

They just announced 2 cases here in NY (one in Westchester county and one in Ulster county which is upstate about 60 miles from NYC). In both cases the person was in SE asia.
