Data Transfer between Old and New Computers

OK--I'm not much of a computer whiz, but I'm not stupid.

I am contemplating buying a new computer (you'd laugh if you knew how old this one is).

I know there is a way to transfer data from the old to the new, but I don't know the mechanics of it.

I've heard there is a cable involved. How much would it cost?

I don't want to transfer everything to the new machine--probably about 20% of what's there. Can I pick and choose what gets moved?

How would I know if a particular file needs to be transferred? Some will be obvious, but I am afraid of not transferring vital files that make other programs run.

My old computer is Win 98. I assume a new one would be XP. Are there compatibility issues with older programs?

These seem like such basic questions, but truly I have no clue.

Remember--I am old enough to be your mother.

Be kind.

Don't know much about computers, but when we upgraded we saved what we wanted to our external zip drive and the re installed it on the new computer.

I just bought a new Dell Laptop to Replace my old IBM ThinkPad that crapped out on me.... and I had a TON of files I had to transfer from the IBM (Win98) to my new Dell (XP)

I have my house networked... (I just switched to a Wireless Network though).

It was easy for me to transfer all of my files cause both of the compters were on the network.

I dunno... my suggestion would be to get a Cheap wired network router, some CAT5e cables (assuming both computers have a Network/LAN connection) and transfer you data that way.

It depends... do you have a Broadband connection or dialup? If you have broadband... you might need a cable modem to ... for the Router network connection.

Sorry... If I confused you... if you need more help or info... let me know :)

wow... that is really confusing after I read it...lol

something much easier for you may be just to burn your old files to a CD (if you have a cd burner)... then just open up the CD on your new computer, and drag and drop the files to where ever you want them.

The cheapest way (persuming you are not using a laptop) is to simply connect the hard disk from your old computer to your new computer and copy the files across as this will cost you nothing, but will involve taking the casing off your computers and poking around inside
