Dark PerGron’s Reviews
Alright, while this won’t be as timely as I wanted, we’re getting better and hopefully going forward I’ll be able to do reviews day of. Either way, I hope you all enjoyed your rest time and are fresh and rejuvenated for Challenge Eight, the first Challenge with eliminations…
Anyway, on to the projects. This round saw the addition of
@Pi on my Cake to Team Lore who I think really helped the energy of the team. This round saw a few players unavailable or limited availability, as well as the still consistently absent
@Chaos Cat not participating at all. With Pi’s addition, I think it really helped balance Team Lore a bit more. As for Team Legend, you guys were really firing on all cylinders teammate wise, with everyone playing an important role, well, until
@TheOriginalTiki got sniped there at the end.
The Adventurer’s Club was something I never got to do, but I remember my parents visiting on one of our family trips while my grandma watched my sister and I back at the hotel (it was the pilot premiere of Phineas and Ferb that night, I remember it well). They raved about it then and still do to this day, even making Kungaloosh drinks. Because of its legendary status, it’s no secret we here on the boards have really tried to capture the importance of the Adventurer’s Club in our projects before, so this project may have seemed redundant, but I was really excited to see what you all got yourselves into. With that, let’s get into the reviews.
Team Lore- Monokuma Lounge
32 pages. Y’all did 32 pages. You’re insane.
Anywho, it should go without saying, I have never seen nor played nor heard of Danganronpa before, so I was going into this project entirely blind. That being said, I loved that you were all able to settle on an idea that maybe you weren’t all familiar with, but let the most active person steer it with the IP but came up with a simple enough style of attraction that other players could help out even without familiarity of the property. That’s how you do IP integration well, especially with more niche topics. You were able to rationalize your weird niche rather well too, I could see it fitting in well, especially if they copied it over at USJ.
Going the direction of a set story every night with overarching characters and plotlines is the right choice to go with here, I think. I always think back to the Jenny Nicholson Evermore Park video and the explanation of how frequent visitors would take all the actor’s time up and new visitors would get lost in the shuffle, and while I do think this would absolutely run that risk when it comes to interacting with the characters, I think each night being a set event makes it so the barrier of entry isn’t so bad for first timers or one-timers. It’s always nice to go in and get a beginning-middle-end and never have to worry about following up if you don’t want to. Especially because stuff like this isn’t cheap to participate in most of the time.
When it comes to the preshow, I can’t lie, I’m probably the type to skip it. The idea of a puppet bear ranting at me about murder games, maybe not my thing. But, for the people who do want to participate, I think it would probably be an interesting time. There’s clearly some loving homages here for fans that I’m sure would be fun, like picking out who’s hair is each one from the games. I won’t lie though, I was waiting way too long for the hair picture to load all the way, only to realize it was cropped.
Alright, normally I write these as I read, commenting where I find it necessary, but instead I just read the whole event and am commenting post reading. I love a good murder mystery, I’ve written and hosted many a murder mystery party for my friends and I always enjoy doing them (in fact, this game was ALMOST a murder mystery, I just couldn’t work out the logistics), so having an opportunity to participate in one at CityWalk would be awesome. That being said, I think there are maybe just a few too many components here to really follow? It could just be reading it and a real experience would be clearer, but there are just too many components to the trial going on at the end there. The rest is clear to me in how it works and I think it would be fun searching for clues and whatnot, but coming to the trial, the fact there are so many moving pieces just has me a bit confused in how it all wraps up. Like the different types of deaths are just a bit weird, I’d say keep it at one-two murders and just a straightforward whodunnit rather than all the wrenches thrown in. You have to remember, this is also a bar at CityWalk so something tells me by the trial, all the college workers who visit each night are going to be pretty blackout and confused by what’s going on. It’s definitely not bad, but maybe cut the minigames or something? Streamline it just a little bit since it’s real life and not a game anymore.
I’d probably have cut the daytime version, just keep it closed especially since there isn’t a ton of detail here, but I won’t count it against you because it’s not bad, just maybe a little bit unnecessary. It does provide the place where all the money is made:
The HHN is a nice touch as well.
Now when it comes to food and drink, that’s my favorite part of the bar experience. I’ve been to some really cool themed bars, but if the smash burgers suck or the drinks are light, I ain’t into it. The bar food picked was solid, pretzels and sliders and kebabs are good picks for snacks, though I won’t lie, all the sweets available with the alcohol has my stomach upset just reading it haha. The drinks also sound pretty solid for specials, though as someone who is not a vodka guy, the inclusion of all the vodka is a turn off, but my gf who is sitting with me as I write this looked over and said “every drink should have vodka, these guys get it.” so you get props from her to counteract my vodka dislike haha.
I’m not gonna go in-depth about the appendix, but I did appreciate its inclusion. It lets y’all go crazy with your character creation and fun you were clearly having with this project while not cramming it all into the writeup, a huge improvement from previous rounds.
Overall, while I have zero familiarity with the IP, I found myself enjoying a lot of what your project had to offer. I think the teamwork and balancing jobs done here was impressive and everyone who participated should give yourselves a pat on the back, because this was a big success!
Team Legend- The Manor of Mysteries
As cheeky as this is, you’d better not be expecting any bonus points for choosing this theme haha.
Alright, so to start out, I think Prezi is cool, I think it’s valid, and I appreciate the unique approach. That being said, I am an ageless skeleton man living in an old victorian manor, so I really appreciated the link to just a straightforward document rather than having to navigate the Prezi. I still went through it to get the feel of it all, but by the fifth time I had to backtrack to make sure I didn’t miss anything, I was really happy that you all made that choice. I know the presentation was a last minute addition by
@Architectural Guinea Pig and while I appreciate the effort that goes into it, if you don’t have the time for a big unique presentation, feel free to just throw it on a Google Doc, or even a forum post. Sometimes, simplicity is key!
Before we get into the writeups, I really liked your maps and I enjoyed exploring it and seeing all the smaller rooms and secrets you had hidden, I would genuinely have a ton of fun exploring this and finding all the hidden stuff around the manor. It feels a lot like the Winchester Mystery House, an idea that would be super exciting.
But the write-ups for the main things are what really count, so let’s jump in there.
The Planetarium is neat, definitely an interesting place to spend some time, and the steampunk of it all is also really fun, I love a good steampunk element when it’s provided. As for the food, I’m a sucker for a good sauce so a collection of sauces with the onion rings sounds delightful. I’m also a sucker for a good taco, so nice to see those included. I would’ve liked to have seen some specialty cocktails here and while I understand we have some minors on the team so that maybe isn’t everyone’s forte, it’s not too hard to look some up. Or heck, just combine some stuff you know about, every drink out there appeals to someone. Even vodka drinks…
I’ve done many murder mysteries, like I’ve said, but the one my friends always want to return to is the old timey hollywood one I wrote back during the pandemic. There’s something about this vibe and experience that really appeals to people, so I think it makes sense that you went for it here. My biggest issue is how it doesn’t really fit with your theme, like this whole room, to me, feels like it could’ve been the entire project but instead just became a loose segment of one. I get it fits the portals storyline later revealed, but I just kept thinking how this could suffice all fleshed out. Again, the food here is good, though it serves more as an entire restaurant than a bar with finger food, so I’m interested in how moving around it works, but again I notice the lack of a drink menu. When making a bar, this is pretty important.
Mysteries of the Manor as a game sounds fun and makes it a reason to participate. I like how you have to get a code to really play as it allows people to just visit the bars without having to play the game, though I’d say maybe make the code easier to get. The idea of preventing crowding is maybe a bit silly when the point of the venue is to get people in to play the game and participate.
Tiki Terrace is definitely the most appealing spot to me. I love a good tiki bar (though I can’t find one anywhere near me) and I love the sugary fruity drinks, kitschy lights, and all else that goes with it. That being said, this really is just a tiki bar, not really anything out of the ordinary for one. You could stick this in Volcano Bay and it wouldn’t be out of place. I did appreciate the food and drink menu here, I’m glad it wasn’t neglected a third time.
In the end, I love the concept here, but to me, it felt like you couldn’t really settle on an idea, so you went with all the ideas and worked around it. All the parts themselves were decent ideas, but I don’t think any bit was strong enough to really make this a stand out project. I’m sure Tiki’s punishment didn’t help the development of the project, especially towards the end, but overall, I was a little bit let down with the whole of it, even if the sum of its parts are solid.
In the end, both teams provided some really interesting ideas and left me having different thoughts coming out than I did going in. Both teams should be proud of themselves and I look forward to seeing what you do next!
