DAK Lodge or Wilderness Lodge

I think part of my resentment toward WL stems from this: When we stayed there, it was our honeymoon, and we stayed in a supposed honeymoon room as we were told. Nothing sets the stage for a romantic evening or stay in general quite like a room that gets the bellowing from Whispering Canyon (don't get me wrong... I love the idea of the place, and it's a lot of fun... but sometimes you just don't want to hear it), or a lovely view of the buses. The staff wasn't exceedingly friendly either. We stayed concierge at AKL and were treated like royalty (we were given a walking tour of the lobby, the concierge lounge, walked to and into our room), but as a honeymooning couple staying concierge at WL, we were walked to the hallway where our room was and were given the point and the "your room is the last one at the end of the hall." Thanks for making it so special.

I think the AKL is beautiful and has great restaurants, and I'm sure the views from the rooms are incredible...BUT I have never stayed there and probably never will simply because it's just too far from everything. We like to be in the mix, close to the other resorts and the parks. Even with a rental car, the AKL is just too far for us. We go there for dinner maybe once every trip and that's about it.

My vote is for the Wilderness Lodge!

If you're considering either one of them, you must know the difference in atmosphere between the two, especially since you've been to WDW at least 35 times. It should just be a matter of what kind of experience you want.

I'm a big fan of AKL, but have no desire to ever stay at WL. I saw the lobby once. It's pretty, but the whole design of the place is not for me. We were going to eat at Whispering Canyon until I saw what the place is like on one of those Travel Channel shows. Yikes! Pass.

I've rarely read a post from anyone complaining about the service or cleanliness of WL. It's a deluxe resort so you'll get your $$ worth....if that's the atmosphere you want. Should you wish an African lodge with animals grazing and artwork everywhere, try AKL.

Different strokes for different folks. Have a great trip.

I just got back from a trip and we spent a significant amount of time on two different days at WL and AKL. We were contemplating both for future trips. I agree with everyone's comments about both resorts, but I have one more thing I'd like to add. I feel the inexpensive food area of AKL is better than WL's. Mara has room to spread out and has fantastic food. One of the first things we did when we got home was look up the recipe for African Stew on the internet. In general, both resorts are fantastic and I'm jealous of your vacation whichever one you pick.

Funny thing is I believe (and I could be wrong) both resorts were designed by the same person. The buildings do have some similarities.

One thing that really made me unhappy with WL was the condition of the room. The carpet was worn down, there was mold in the bathroom, the fan didn't work in the bathroom and there was rust all over the fan and rust stains around the shower rods. Not what I expect when I pay for a deluxe resort.

Also, as far as the distance thing goes; I am not always the most patient person in the world, but I never once had a problem with how long it took to get from AKL to a park or back.

They may have been, but it's the "great outdoors" and woodsy atmosphere that isn't for me. True, the African Lodge theming is outdoorsy as well, but to me it's a different feeling. It's more Africa than the woods of America.

Again, different strokes.......................

Frankly, I'll take the Boardwalk or Contemporary over both WL and AKL.
