Dad still wants to go with injury?

So...my dad just broke two ribs shortly after our trip was booked a few days ago, (35 days left) and he still wants to go. This gives him 5 weeks to heal, the fracture is not major, but it concerns me. Obviously family comes first. I'd really like to re-scheduale, but he is totally against it, and feels in 5 weeks he will be good to go. I am very worried, and stressed because I do not want anything to further his injuries, let alone him have to sit waiting for my brother and I to get off a ride. I understand him having being diabetic + him having gastric bypass could effect the healing time.

He 100% wants to go, to get out of the cold weather here. I am just very concerned that he could only injure himself further. We would also be driving 19hrs before our trip even began.

Thoughts?

Check with his physician, definitely. If they clear him to go, and he's insistent, just adjust expectations (e.g. how uncomfortable he may be after the car ride, needing to take extra breaks during the drive and while in the parks, etc.) Depending on his mobility and where he is at healing wise by the point of your trip, you both may want him to avoid certain attractions that might exacerbate the injury or impede his healing, but otherwise he'll likely be able to still find plenty of things to enjoy.

Does your dad still want to go because HE still wants to go, or does he say that he still wants to go because he doesn't want to let you and your brother down ?

Check with the doctor.

Is there anyone else travelling with you that can share the driving ?

Fractured ribs heal much quicker than bruised ribs. I think he will be fine. Let him check with his doctor. Broen ribs need activity to heal properly. Sitting around and resting is worse for broken ribs. He will be limited to the rides he can go on but the walking around should not be an issue.

I will caveat this based on the information than this is minor meaning that the fractured ribs have no chance to harm vital organs.

Put it this way: I'd rather have a rib fracture in WDW than one at home :p

And as a parent, some if my favorite moments were waiting on a park bench while my family is on a ride.

5 weeks is a decent enough time to heal, but regardless i would make him skip space mountain. i think you could fracture a healthy rib on that ride:p:p:p

I were in his shoes I would go! Just make sure to check with him often, make sure he is comfortable, well hydrated and not in agony. Carry all the luggage, all of it. If he is uncomfortable hopefully he will speak up and rest on a bench to people watch. The chance to make memories with your family is what is on his mind, go and gently hug him often and pamper him! Have fun!

Since my ankle still bugs me after 4 surgeries, I looked into different things you can do to help. You can rent a wheel chair and little scooter from Disney, but they cost more. There are several 3rd party companies that you can rent from that will bring them straight to your hotel. It isn't a bad idea to get these company #'s to take with you. If walking around is an issue, you can always rent one of those to get around. I've also heard the electric scooters from off Disney are faster.

My thinking is that if moving around, standing, and lines are going to bug him, he can always get a scooter.
