CT's Trip Oct. 2-8

Preamble:
This trip was a bit different as it was just my wife and I getting away to celebrate our 25th anniversary, leaving the kids in the (gulp) fine care of their Grandparents and a "housemom". Itinerary was also different as my wife enjoys Disney, but not nearly at the pace or level of detail that I do. While allowing me to do much of the planning, she did provide input on certain items that I was happy to oblige. We also both agreed to try to do a number of things that we hadn't in past trips.

Oct. 2
Managed upgrades on the flight (nice start) and arrived late morning with Quicksilver right there to pick us up. So much quicker and nicer than Mear's cattle cars. Arrived at Poly and checked in to Tahiti, lagoon view rm 2019.
Great view except for the palm on that outstretch of land (where we saw a few weddings) that obscured the castle. I offered to chop it down for her, but we made do. Headed over to the gym at GF to work some kinks out, showered then headed over to Epcot for a quick walk through then on to Flying Fish (1st time). Great meal with Michael (from Slovenia) who was knowledgible, attentive and fun.

Took a leisurely stroll back for Illuminations. Had "reserved viewing" this time on the landing dock in front of Morocco. Wasn't as good as spots in Italy or UK/France, but it wasn't crowded and had a railing to lean on. Took our time getting back to the monorail for the ride home. The Tahiti building was close to TTC so we used that more than the Poly monorail.

Oct 3 AK day and of course it was hot and very humid. Got there about 10 and got onto Safari with only a 10 minute wait. Took the train, just for a ride, and to show my wife some of the animal facility. On to Lion King which looked terriffic. New lighting is more dramatic. Hit Dinosaur before lunch with only a 10 minute wait. Had lunch at Flame Tree, pork BBQ and ribs, yum! Visited TTBaB with only a short wait (I leaned), walked through the animal areas, saw Flights of Wonder (last time we saw it was in it's temporary tent). Took bets on the behavior of a rather extroverted 11 or so year old girl in the front row, and won when she jumped up to volunteer at the first chance. Took cruel delight when the hornbill wouldn't go for the grapes she threw. Got a good look at EE and listened to some guests discussing when the "hotel" there would be opening (seriously), I just held my tongue.

Then time (past time) for pre parade margaritas :slurp: at Tusker and on to the little reserved area on the bridge. Humidity and temp must have each gone up considerable as did the park population! Had a nice talk with Matthew who was "guarding" our little reserve spot. He's quite the mover and shaker, usually working at Pangani I believe. Having a great time at Disney, has found himself, has an offer to work at zoo's in Austrailia, and may eventually finish his undergraduate degree. Parade was fun, then it was time to head out for a gym visit, much needed shower, dinner at Kona Cafe and on to our first MNSSHP. As you can see on AkiraRaptor's pictures, there is a wonderful chocolate Lilo and Stitch on display...that they weren't quite ready to share. Meal was fine, but waitress was a bit distracted/overwhelmed.

Got to the party about 8 (hour after it had opened) and the gates weren't too backed up. Rode on the train with a very nice 250 lb or so Mickey with Minny and a little one (Eeyore). It was still about 85 with equal humidity....I felt for him in that costume as he was sweating even in the monorail. My wife really got into the trick or treating and our little orange backs sustained us throughout the rest of the trip. Lighting and the guests were very entertaining. Fireworks were nice, reminded me of earlier shows with the exception of when effects went off fully encircling the park...really a great effect. Saw the flight of the witch of course and headed to main street for the parade.

The headless horseman was great...couldn't imagine running that horse over the cobblestones (no less without a head and with sparking horseshoes). The parade was more entertaining that the current 3:00 by far. Some of the floats were very clever, and the dance numbers were great. Our favorite was the gravediggers. Watched their routine all the way up main street and it didn't repeat... caught a couple more rides (thunder mountain at night!). Couldn't convince my dear to stay beyond 10:30 (even with the promise of more chocolate), so we called it a day.

CT's trip part II (if you can stand it)

On to Oct. 4 and MK. One of our new try's, Keys to the Kingdom Tour. Our guide was Matthew and he was terrific! Energetic, passionate, knowledgable and provided a well paced tour. Must be that midwestern charm. Tour group was about 16 which I thought was large, but he handled it well and gave everyone personal attention. Other groups out on the same day (and other days) were of similar size. Good that the tours are popular but would like to see them smaller. Won't give away all of the tour, but I was really surprised to learn what the thatched roof's of the Tiki room were made of...just never thought of it before... While the tours are sufficiently different, and depend a lot on the CM guide, I strongly recommend this tour to all!

By the time the tour was done, the park was PACKED! Splash was over an hour, so did Presidents (HM was done on the tour...with Matthew standing up in his car and yelling out THERE IT IS! when we got to a hidden Mickey he had previously discussed. Space Mountain was a short wait, relaxed on TTA and headed out for gym and shower. Walked past Stitch longingly just in front of three CM's, but got no invite in....

Had a wonderful quiet dinner at Chef's de France at a back table on the side looking out on the back street and courtyard. Our server Cecile (from Bordeaux sp?) was charming, a bit shy but engaging and very professional. Meals were wonderful. Back to the MK for Wishes. Had seating in front of Plaza Pavilion...and actually had seats! Can't think of a better way to end the day.

Oct. 5 MGM

Got there for early admission (about 15 minutes past to avoid the first push). Did RnRC and ToT with no wait...I was a happy camper. On to GMR and a walk around seeing nearly half the park behind walls. Did the not so great Backlot Tour with narrator almost as one dimensional as the tour. The tanker truck didn't move toward the tram as expected. Did get a glimpse of the Stunt Spectacular....looks impressive, and it was most of the reason we went on the tour. SF backdrop looks neat...Rob will have to visit upon his return to compare! Great lunch at 50's prime time (a favorite of ours and one of my wife's picks) Pat from NJ was our waitress, but she wasn't Pat or from NJ. (One of many alternate nametags during the visit).

Back to the room for a rest, then on to DTD for Cirque du Soleil. had seats on the side just above the promenade, so we were near where the clowns came out, saw the entrance promenade close up and had a great view of the show. Spectacular as always! Dinner at Wolfgang Puck (another wife favorite) then on to Pleasure Island (another first). Comedy Warehouse was a dissapointment as to me the "improv" seemed too rehearsed and the set was really short. Got a few laughs so on we went to Adventurer's Club.

Has some tips from Pippa (Thanks!) and other discussions on this sight so I had some idea where to go. Got to enjoy a number of the rooms and spent a lot of time in the lounge just watching people, having a few kungalooshes and seeing a fair amoutnt of the cast strolling in and out. There were a few kind of disturbing groupies out this evening...my wife wouldn't go near the General because a few of his friends nearby. There was however a slight man, probably in his late 50's with tight yellow shorts, Mickey gloves and a sign around his neck. At first we thought he was cast, but as he had a beer in his (Micky) hand, then thought he was part of some cast joke. Only after "Ginger" had remarked about him to us did we know for sure that he was totally on his own. Well, managed to keep the wife out 1 1/2 hours past her bedtime, and she started to fade, so we headed back...two more days to go...

CT's October Trip part III (the end)

Still with me...almost put myself to sleep...

Oct 6 (Our Anniversary) and on to Epcot for the Undiscovered Future World Tour with Will. Don't know if it would have mattered having the great Keys tour first, but this one was a drag from the start. I believe a lot more could be done with it, but Will just didn't have the rapport, timing or presentation to make it work. We spent 20 minutes standing outside of Guest Relations looking at pictures during a Walt history. He did not provide some of the basic information I had read previously on this site and allearsnet about SSE and some other basics.

He was unwilling (or unknowing) to discuss the future, rumors, or anything non party line. After going on about responding to guest comments in bringing back Figment, he just gave me a sour look when I asked him, What about Dreamfinder? Also after spending about 20 minutes discussing the nuances of the balloons and fountain in the land, didn't know anything about them staying or going for Soarin. The group of 11 was not as dynamic as the Key's group, so that might have been part of the issue as well. We did visit the lounge at Living Seas that had sustained a lot of water damage and had big fans all over drying it out. It was nice to see the aquarium, but couldn't you have selected something that was not torn up with wires all over?

It was somewhat more interesting from here going backstage and taking pictures with the pteradactyl that was removed to make room for the Ellen animatronic in Energy. Again Will did not appreciate my comment about Wonders of Life being closed. After he said it was opening seasonally, I asked why it was closed all summer...again a smirk. Then on to the HP lounge at MS. Oh boy, a lounge tour! We had a biobreak here and while everyone was ready, he was carrying on a conversation with the hostesses, then proceeded to start, and FINISH a video game associated with the lounge.

Then to Test Track, backstage and into the loading area. NO offer to ride either MS or TT...hmmmm. Then backstage for some interesting stuff. Got to meet a Guest Relations candidate from Brazil who had previously worked at POP Century. English really wasn't that good and the presentation wasn't that much...didn't seem prepared. Saw were all the water craft and Illumination barges are stored and then popped out in China. We were offered passes to Illuminations (the good spot by Italy) and 20% off a meal at China.

That really felt like a waste of 4 of the 5 hours...I'm sure someone else could bring much more to the tour. By then Test track wait was over an hour (this park, after lunch also got crowded!) Did walk on to MS, then over to the Land where the wait was 35 min. Grizz should be happy at that...a longer wait at The Land than MS! .

Humidity was down a lot, so we set off to world showcase and ate/drank our way around the world for the rest of the afternoon. (Planned our attack previously) This is a really fun time and executed well with special entertainment, Kool and the Gang were GREAT!...even not so old folks were enjoying them.

Staggered back to the monorail, showered and got gussied up for dinner at Victoria and Albert's :slurp: . We had a great time there and were sufficiently pampered. I still can't figure out how those coffee pots work though. It's kinda fun getting dressed up and riding the monorail with everyone else in their shorts and t-shirts, does make you feel special. I do strongly suggest that everyone try V&A's at least once.

OK, Oct. 7, our last day. MK

Got there early, so we got to do all the rides that were too crowded on our earlier visit. My wife saw Philharmagic for the first time, and it was a nice tie in to info from the Key's tour concerning Fantasia. On a whim, did Peter Pan, Snow White and Pooh for the first time since the kids were small...ok, 1st time for Pooh.

Relaxed a bit on TTA...and surprise...Space Mountain with the lights on! Walking by Stitch and 5 CM's were standing there. I know they probably had plenty to say about me after, but I had to ask if there was any shakedown runs going on...and offered myself as a guinea pig. I'm sure they're tired of being asked, but hey, they were there, and if you don't ask....

Final dinner was at Artist's Point (another Wife favorite) and they provided some nice touches. Not only did they have a personalized menu, but they provided us with a champagne toast on the mouse. Wonderful meal of buffalo (really bison...but..) and salmon. We had a nice window seat with a great view of the stream and the geiser in the distance. I was a little surprised at the number of small children at this restaurant. We then took a nice boatride back to MK to see Wishes a last time. As we got out of the park early, and of course asked, we rode back in the front of the monorail...another first.

Epilog

In flying in and out of Orlando, you couldn't help but notice the large amount of blue dotting the landscape (tarps). Driving from the airport, newer neighborhoods and condos seemed in good shape, but in between, older neighborhoods and small homes showed a lot of damage. Some places had all the homes with tarps and many windows out. Many pool screens were mangled. Our thoughts and prayers are with the folks in Florida, hopefully things can get back to normal before long.

Our driver said that the blue tarp is the new state flag.

Disney property had a number of trees cut down and areas cleared. The worst was in the swamps between TTC and Epcot where most of the trees are down.

As I had said before, I was surprised at the crowds for this time of year (having visited many times before and having the place to ourselves). I guess a lot of folks were down that were originally scheduled for September.

Weather was beautiful except for the humidity early in the week. All in all, as wonderful a time as we could have hoped for....
Now back to the real world.
