Cruise excursions in Cozumel - please help!

Hi - Taking the 7 night Western Caribbean cruise in November....if anyone has info on any of the excursions in Cozumel - please let me know. We will have 2 kids (6 yrs old) and wanted to see some kind of ruins/historical stuff but one of the excursions seems to have a good 3 hours worth of just transportation time (bus, ferry, etc) so I don't want that and there are excursions to a place called San Gervasio ruins, but the picture Disney shows doesn't look too interesting!
Or, if anyone can tell me just about the port - can you get to a beach or any ruins on your own (walking, cab. etc)???
ANy help would be great! Thanks!

I have been to Cozumel before in the past, not on a cruise but I stayed at a resort. I don't believe there is much in the way of walking or driving distance. I know a lot of site are out of the way in Mexico. Last year I went to Cancun which is right across the waterway and we took a day trip to Chichen Itza. The drive did take somewhere in the hours range. We were on the bus for a while. In Cozumel, there was a small village/ town we walked around in and visited many small shops. They also have a Hard Rock Cafe or something along those lines, but I don't think that it what you are looking for. I would say your best bet is to contact the cruise line or someone to find out what the best options are.

We did the mayan ruins at tulum. It's some travel, but 30-45 minutes consists of loading on to the ferry and going across the channel to Playa del Carmen. A boat ride. Kids will love that if they're not prone to motion sickness. Then the bus ride is about the same length can be boring. But they always stop (we've been multiple times) at a clean shop for a "potty break." They want you to buy stuff from the store. Anyway it doesn't feel that long. The ruins are interesting and you usually have time to walk down to the beach.

Not sure what excursions they have now, but we combined the Mayan ruins with Xel-Ha and that was kinda cool. Xcaret is very cool, has dolphins and stuff.

I have stayed in Cozumel many times...miss it BADLEY! Unless you are staying on the island...it will be very hard for you do do certain things...The ruins to witch you refer to are very good...alot of walking..rent a guide..you will recieve much more info...if time permits..go to the museum ...on the waterfront..taxi will take you there...lots to see...wonderful natve replica hut in back courtyard...with someone there to explain all...WONDERFUL restraunt last we were there on top with great view of the west..better at breakfast! Try to shop just up the street at Cinco Sols...store just goes on forever...great place to eat there also...free samples of tequlia...I obtained so many things there! On Sunday nights...locals come out in main square with food and dancing...I got to know some of them...got invited to local places to eat off the beaten track..great times...there also are many places to just go snorkle and swim for free...just rent a wreck and drive...only one road around the island...lighthouse on the southern end...and a saltwater marsh...kinda neat place..locals used to serve ya a meal..it is now just a museum...many "twelve volt bars" on the eastern side of the island...open just for the day..some on full moon nights...very quiet on that side of the island...dune buggy tour is good for the day on north eastern part of island...goes to the most eastern pyrimid for the king to look out into the sea...have to go by a mexican miltary outpost...we stopped to give some of the guys extra cokes and pops we did not drink...they will close the "road" if there are drug runners...also on that part of the island..you have to go out on a boat to snorkle or dive to some atolls...at the museuem in town..you can learn more about these! (Ex-patriots, US citizens) own a wonderful putt putt course..18 holes..will give you a wlkie talkie..so you can order drinks...you play through waterfalls...bannana trees...floweres...birds...igunas..it was great! Whew...I just know there is more...I stayed away from the bars...I wanted to remember my vacations...but I always had a beer or two..! Have fun!
