"Guests can now use their Credit and Resort Charge cards to make purchases at any outdoor cart location in the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. A new wirless network has enabled card-based purchases to outdoor locations."

does this mean we can also use the room keys/credit cards for teh resorts too? if so, that would be great, I aboslutly hate carrying cash around, and it makes it much easier to keep track of spending (and a lot less loose change) if we can!

and this is one step closer for those of us believing in a cashless society :)

Being a computer guy, I have to wonder about the security of beaming all the card numbers all over the park ... especially since the card is pretty much just linked to a credit card.

Well, as I've been told, the Room Key has NO information about you on it, other than the multi-digit ID of that card, which is then simply linked to a database.

Therefore, all anyone would be able to get would be your Key Card ID # - which does them no good because you have to physically HAVE that card to purchase anything. You can't just use the # to do anything without the card - can't open the hotel room door, can't charge, etc. So, there is no use in trying to capture the wireless signal.

I have no idea what you mean? I've always been able to use my Room Key to charge things at the resorts. Heck, I even used it at the Water Mouse booth at Riverside.

I was just making sure they also included the room charge, along with other kinds of credit cards. I assumed it also meant both, but I was wondering if anyone could verify for sure.

Now we can go into deeper debt all around the park!

This is a good move on their end, I hate to carry cash, and always hate waiting in a long line where you can use credit.

This is an Awesome new thing, I get to work these machines, and believe it or not, it takes little time to complete the transactions, almost all credit cards, including Disney Resort ID's can be used.

However, if you do not have cash, a fair warning, make sure to ask if the credit machine is up, because sometimes the machine will not print, or we are having problems with them.

:) More info if ya want it, just ask away. They are really neat devices.

What if the card won't swipe, can you hand-key it?

And what happens if its declined? Anything special or just a declined message?

And on a side note, whoever said 128 bit encryption ... big deal. Way around it, very simply:
1) Bring in laptop/pda to sniff out the network.
2) Monitor all the traffic in your local area.
3) Use a card yourself that you know the card number of.
4) Check back through the traffic and run an algorithm to translate the encryted data back into the card.
5) Use same algorithm on the rest of the data.
6) Have fun with new credit card numbers.

Yes it might be a little difficult with a lot of data, but any self respecting computer criminal knows AMEX is 15 digits, starts with 3, VISA is 16 digits starts with 4, etc.

If I go back any time soon I will be sure to bring my laptop and PDA.

And if this sounds farfetched to anyone, you can steal credit card info at any Best Buy that uses one of the portable registers in their store.

anyway... lol. I doubt this was done to convenience the guests, but rather as a way to get more money for a cheap price. These Palm OS POS terminals have been being used for well over a year now on a trial run and have just now gained widespread use. I remember them in Food and Wine 2002, and I was told they were being used at the AK prior to that.

Yes, some of the registers swipppers don't work, and you can key it in.

If it is declined, we will simply ask for another form of payment. It just declined, instead of approved.
