CPU usage

I tried looking, and if there is a post like this somewhere let me know!! I didn't know what board would be best to ask either but::

Everytime I open this site up in my Internet Explorer/Firefox, my computer cooling fan goes crazy and my CPU usage sky-rockets into the upper 90s while any page of this website is opened . I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there is a way to fix it. It does the same thing on my boyfriend's computer as well, but acts up more on mine because it is a laptop.

You look at your CPU process by going to your Windows Task Manager (Alt+Ctrl+Delete) and click on the tab that says "Processes". This shows you what programs are being used and how much CPU is being used on them.

Thank you!

More then likely, it is Macromedia Flash module loading, on slower computers this can cause the browsers to 'hang' while loading. The other thing that can cause this is Adware or Spyware, if you don't have any software that checks for this, get some, and some are better then others and you can run multiple.

But more then likely it is just flash running. If you go to any other sites that use flash do you have the same issue?

Try switching your scheme for this site to "Blue Daylight - Dialup (No Flash) and see if it runs better.

This worked! It just took the animation off of the top of all of the pages. And to Wired, Thanks, I know my flash must need to be updated or something, I'm not good with computer: I let my boyfriend take care of all of that stuff!

Thanks E4ymod and Wired!

That's funny, I used to have the exact same problem with my old compaq laptop. I used to just scroll until the flash banner at the top was offscreen and my fan would instantly stop. Funny stuff.

It probably happens to a lot more people than one would think. The front page is just too much for many PCs to handle.

No offense to Steve intended, but it would be nice if it were a little less intensive.

Compare these two pages... check the CPU usage:

http://www.inquisitivemonkey.co.uk/with_wmode.php
http://www.inquisitivemonkey.co.uk/without_wmode.php

The top one is how it is now, the bottom one disables one preference.

I get on average a 60% CPU load reduction without wmode in Firefox, and about 50% in IE.

Wmode allows Flash movies with transparent backgrounds to see the content of the DIV/layer below it, as you can notice in the two examples where the colour changes ever so slightly.

I do notice a little performance boost by using Flash Player 8.

Flash animation is fairly CPU intensive, and will take up a lot of your CPU resources. However, it doesnt lock the CPU exclusively to itself, and it will allow other programs to take some of the resources if needed.
