Could it really happen? (X-Men/mutant related)

Do you think as science furthers itself and we discover more and more about the human body and it potential that we could possibly see genetically enhanced humans or animals? I'm not suggesting that one day there could be people who can control the weather, shoot optic blasts from their eyes or teleport. What I am thinking of is more along the lines of is healing powers(ones self only), telekanesis, endurance and enchanced senses. Things that very few humans already posess but mutated. Could altering the DNA code or atom structure do anything like such?

Just curious....:)

Yes it definitly could. I would actually like to have mutant powers...depending on what it is. I'm sure I'm not the only who has ever thought of it. I would be surprised (if I was still alive somehow) if it didn't.

Animals have been genetically enhanced for thousands of years (have you ever seen a wild poodle?). Genetic engineering is an active science. Crops are being grown that are resistant to blights etc. There was a big hubbub over the whole issue a while back when there were requirements that genetically modified food be labeled, but, for some reason, the controversy seems to have died out.

I could add quite a bit more and tell you what my wife is currently doing, but I'd probably have people getting very nervous.

What you've basically described is natural selection.
The attributes that make a species stronger, and give them an advantage are selected for and retained. These stronger individuals breed ahead of lesser ones, thus passing their genes on.

In humans though, there are very few selection pressures (e.g. competition for food, for mates) due to how our society now works. We've become too good at living, thus natural selection is very weak.

(This stuff is my bag baby!)

Genetic engineering goes off on a different path, but this is a prefectly natural process.
