Cost to upgrade to annual pass

We have a family trip planned for October 2012, 6 adults, 3 kids all under age of 3. I purchased 8 day park hoppers from Undercover Tourist before the last ticket increase. Purchasing in 2011 avoided 2 increases before our trip. I thought I was being so smart. We originally booked our trip using SIL military discount in September, but had to reschedule to October therefore losing the military discount. A good friend's son is an intern this semester at WDW and she asked me to go with her to visit him. If I book the room I will need to do it by Sunday, since our dates are tentatively Feb 26-March 1, to take advantage of the Spring Room Discounts. But we just started discussing dates today and haven't made a decision as to what hotel to stay at, although it will be a deluxe. So here is my question. Can I upgrade the ticket I purchased to an annual pass therefore using the annual pass discount for February trip and for October trip (hopefully)? If I can upgrade, where do I do that because as I understand it I need to have an annual pass before I check in. Also, what cost gets credited to me for the purchase of the park hopper? The price I actually paid or the current price? I am very excited to be going to Disney again so soon, but I think I am overthinking this too much!! BTW- my husband and I have gone to wdw 3 times since December 2010, so I think I could possibly get more use out of an AP than just 2 trips.

You can book your room using the AP discount before you get the AP- all you need is the necessary booking code.

Any guest relations window will be able to upgrade your ticket to an AP for you. I'm not sure if the hotel concierges can do this, but I would tend to doubt it.

Your friend's kid should be able to get you a cm friends and family discount if they are working for the Disney Co. If you book a room with an AP discount, you will need to show your AP when you check in. You can upgrade your tickets at park or dtd guest relations, not sure about at the resort. You will pay the price of an AP minus the cost of the ticket you are upgrading. If you have used your ticket, your AP start date will be the day you first used your ticket.

Just to confirm, you haven't actually used any days of the ticket yet, right? Because you can only upgrade within 14 day even if you buy "no expiration" add-on.

So, that said here's what you do. Enter a park with the tickets, then go to Guest services and upgrade them. If you do not use them first, you get what you paid. If, however, you use them at least once, they become "current" for the purposes of upgrades and you get the current gate price of the tickets. It's a little know "trick" that helps save you a bit of cash.

I will confirm what MissM is saying. I did exactly this in December. Upgraded my ticket purchased from Undercover Tourist at Epcot Guest Relations after I entered the park. The CM had to go in the back because I "bought the ticket at a discount". I was worried, but she came back and said that they would credit me for the full price of the ticket for the upgrade.

What you might end up doing is running over to a park before you check into your resort in order to do the exchange. I don't know if they'll allow you to check in without an AP or an AP voucher.

Thanks for the answers. I would not have known to go to a park first. My friend's son is not in the system yet for discounts so we don't know if we will use his or not. Does anyone know how much the room discounts are?

Depends on travel time and resort. Mousesavers.com has great and up-to-date info on the discounts, but I believe is ranging anywhere from 25% at the values and 30-35% at the Deluxes, depending on the resort.

The discounts aren't released for October yet, though, you probably need to wait until March or April to see if they will come out.

You don't have to have the AP (or AP voucher) in hand when you check in. They'll allow you to check in and then you have to stop by the desk within 24 hours to show them the AP after you've bought it.

And I will concur with what the others have said. Use your ticket for a park entry first, and then upgrade. Did that back in June with a left-over 1-day ticket I'd been sitting on for 2 or 3 years (bought it as part of a Free Dining reservation when I already had an active AP).
