Cost of Cruise is crazy

Ditto! We were so envious of the people getting on the busses to go to resorts and we were getting on a bus to go to the airport that I just couldn't stand it! So we're going to do a week at WDW after our week on the ship. Plus, coming from the west coast, we will be all adjusted to the east coast time zone and therefore will be all set to get up and tour the parks. Generally, we are SO jet-lagged for the first 3 days that we are extremely grouchy when we go to WDW (it'l like getting up at 3am our time)! But getting on the ship, we have 2 days at sea before we have to get out and tour the port cities:)

We are a long way off on a dream trip. We have a lot of things that need to fall in place, especially recovery from a car accident. I had hoped to be able to take a trip in Summer 2017. I wanted to do a 1-week cruise and 1-week at WDW. The cost of the cruise alone for 2 adults and an 11 year is over $6,000. This trip overall would be at least $10,000. That is a hard pill to swallow. Because of timing, we couldn't join. Our friends took a cruise over Christmas on another ship. It was $500 per person.

That's crazy, I honestly wouldn't suggest a cruise in the first place. I know Disney is always better but we sailed on The Norwegian Dawn over the summer and had the worst experience ever. The food was no better than college cafeteria food, the workers were rude, the rooms were tiny, the motion sickness was terrible, the people were trashy, everybody was drunk all day everyday, and not having wifi was hard. Your better off going to the parks :)

If you love Disney and you can swing it financially, you should try a Disney Cruise. There is so much to do for children and Castaway Cay is a blast. If you like meet and greets and live shows featuring Disney characters with music from Disney films, you may well like a Disney Cruise. The food is tasty and I have had nothing but positive interactions with the CMs. The downside is, yeah, they are pretty costly compared to other lines. I am open to trying different lines at this point.

Food - Food on a DCL cruise is way better than college cafeteria food

Workers - Workers on the DCL cruse are like old school WDW cast members (thats a good thing)

Room size - Small rooms are par for the course on a cruise. DCL rooms are slightly larger than most other lines, and they do have that split bath, but they are still by no means spacious - but that is cruising, space is at a premium.

Motion sickness - effects everyone in a different way. Newer ships have better stabilization.

Trashy drunk people - I didn't see any on a DCL cruise. But then I seem to miss the hordes of roaming noisy drunks that apparently infest EPCOT F&W every year as well.

Not having WiFi - I would say 1st world problem. Honestly, unless you have a business that you actively need to check in with on a daily basis, is it really so hard to go without wifi for a few days.

And you can almost always find free wifi in port. So maybe you can't check every day, but you can do email 2 or 3 times during a 7 night cruise.

Of the 6 Disney cruises that we were on:
1. We found the food to be exceptional.
2. We found each cast member to be professional and courteous, and many were amazingly fun.
3. We found the cabins to be small compared to a hotel room, but large compared to Norwegian cruise cabins.
4. We've NEVER had motion sickness during the 48 days we were onboard.
5. Except for our 3 day cruise on the Dream, we've seen virtually no trashy people.
6. The only drunkenness we saw was moderate, late at night by the adults only areas, and never around our kids.
7. I believe they have WIFI for a small fee, but I'm not sure because I go on vacation to get away from that stuff.

A cruise forces you to slow down, to mostly avoid the lines and crowds, and to relax. The parks are great too; we love both. But please understand that a Disney cruise is a completely different business model from other cruise lines. It's geared toward families, has no casino, and costs more, which means that people who are out to get bloated on food or blasted on cheap drinks go elsewhere. Also, Castaway Cay is the best private island in the cruise industry.

It's not even comparing apples to oranges. It's like comparing apples to curling irons--something completely unrelated.

I've never been on a Disney Cruise I am just talking about my experience with NCL. It was worse than one can imagine. I guess if your into people throwing up into pools and kids running up and down the hall all night that's fine. Again I'm sure DCL is much better.

If you want the Dinsey brand, then of course you are only going to get it on Dinsey ships. But lets be clear what part of the brand you can and cannot get on other lines.

You are not going to get the red, white, and yellow mickey mouse color scheme. You are not going to get Disney characters. You are not going to get a split bath stateroom.

You may not get the 100% level of maintence that you see on a DCL ship - I could not find any rust, chipped varnish, or dirt on those ship. You may not get 100% family entertainment, you may not get the excellent kids clubs that are on DCL ships

Here is what you can get on other lines. Food that is just as good (or better). Staff that is just as service oriented. Maintenence that is %99 percent as good as Dinsey. I'm not talking dirt, or big patches of rust. I'm talking some scuffs on the deck or a little crazing in the varnished surfaces. Entertainment that is just as good, but not as family oriented as DCL. You can get a stateroom that is just as nice, but with a single bath. You can get a ship that is just as clean, decorated, and enjoyable as a DCL ship

So, you get can a lot of what you get on DCL. If paint colors, Disney characters, more family orientation, and a split bath justify the large upcharge, then yes, go with DCL.

Except you forgot, the liner style and classic design of the vessels, the attention to detail, theaters and public rooms that bring you back to the 30's, 40's and 50's. The fireworks, Staterooms with wave phones to keep tack of each other, the magic port holes, with large portholes and some design and style to them, not just white and Formica. The Broadway quality entertainment and no bringing the passengers up on stage to full the time, Pirate and Star Wars nights and no noisy casinos or smoke in the accommodations.

I never saw a DCL vessel lose a battle of the horns or had another cruise vessel have to go and rescue a DCL passinger from the water, as DCL has had to do for other cruise line vessels, just a small demonstration of DCL crew training.

and that is just off the top of my head.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS if anyone doesn't think the specail DCL vessels and the Disney magic and pixie dust is worth the price, I strongly suggest those folks sail another line, why be unhappy? DCL doesn't seem to have a problem filling the vessels. They are even building 2 more. However if your going to miss all that DCL offers over and above other lines.........stay with the Mouse.

Then again, by many standards, DCL is fairly inexpensive. Yeah, it's a crapton compared to the low-end tier of offerings. But have you ever priced a cruise with Crystal, Azamara, Australis, Regent, Silversea, or Seabourn? Let alone an expedition or adventure cruise.

I have. While I have not sailed on them, from what I have seen, they blow DCL away. However, they are upscale cruise lines. Not family friendly, and dont even THINK about not dressing for dinner - every night.
