Im not sure about the US, I assume it’s the same, but in Canada Amazon has quite the network of warehouses and their own in house delivery system. I think they likely can really help with distribution.

Amazon has just recently gotten to the point near me where they have Prime vehicles delivering my stuff now instead of the post office.

I don’t see how Amazon getting involved is a bad thing. Do people really want the vaccination plan to fail now since “their guy” lost a free and fair election? Get over it, we have a real path to the end of this pandemic and it has nothing to do with politics. The best thing the government can do is get out of the way and let people who handle this stuff best do what they do. If that means Amazon or FedEx or CVS or the military or whoever helping out then so be it. All hands on deck.

I wish people would drop this whole line of thinking. It kills me. You want Biden to fail just because he's not your guy? This type of attitude exists on both sides of the aisle and both sides use that as an excuse for their behavior. Yeah, let's hope the country goes down in flames because I'm a sore loser and it'll prove I was right. I didn't vote for Biden and won't agree with many of his positions, but I sure as heck hope he's the most successful president we've ever seen.

It is good news.

I think some in here can’t fathom the fact that the previous administration had no distribution plan. Wasn’t Warp Speed supposed to result in mass military distribution? Military sites setup for vaccination or something?

It’s crazy that the feds had no plan in place for when vaccines started rolling in.

Past rhetoric aside, some of us (myself included) saw the success of the vaccine production, and the concurrent red tape removal to move it along, as a sign that adults in the room must have also been working on what to do if/when the vaccines being investigated worked out. Or at a minimum been setting up contracts beyond shipment. In fact, I even took the shipment agreements, UPS and FedEx getting along, and the pharmacy to LTC facility arrangement as a sign of good things to come. Now that those haven't panned out, we're behind the 8-ball again, and it's incredibly frustrating to witness.

Hopefully the next couple weeks sort out faster than we can hope, and we're actually able to inoculate faster than mutations emerge to move "around" the vaccine.

I feel like FedEx and UPS probably have the delivery services down, where Amazon could help is maybe on logistics around scheduling appointments. They are certainly capable of handling massive traffic to their website and through AWS help others run their online businesses.

Unfortunately...they were hurt by lack of prep/coordination too and are in a scramble...

I may have brother who’s an exec at a shipping company...who specializes in medical services...and hates the color brown...maybe

I worked for the post office for 34 years until 2019. They had started delivering more and more with their own vehicles and was cutting ties with the post office years ago. They still rely on the PO for some packages but now they seem ready to break ties fully.
I remember after they started their own deliveries.. our package volume went way down and we all let out a whew.. this is nice. Of course we lost business but our backs and legs were happy about it.
So they do have a great infrastructure and delivery platform and it would sure help with this pandemic in some way. As long as it’s not around Christmas.. still waiting for a package mailed out on December 14th.. tracking stopped on it.

I do wonder about whether companies are doing all they can to increase production. For a company if they invest capital into manufacturing and the vaccine is too effective in reducing the virus in the world. They may have too much invested for a good return. But I think that given the rate of mutations they will have a market for a while. In any case, if they are hesitant to build more production capability then perhaps the government should invest in it. Especially if the production capability can repurposed if a new virus becomes a threat. Manufacturing supply chain is another area, if it is restricting production, that could be helped (DPA, capital, etc.).

I suppose it depends on what we mean by "all they can". I don't see this as major capital investment right now, simply because the timeframe for that is too long. what I meant was de-bottlenecking manufacturing processes, making sure staff is adequate for 24/7 operation, possibly repurposing existing equipment that can be done quickly at small expense. The lead time for major equipment in pharma is too long to just invest in a new reactor train, but there are other things I'm sure they are working on to optimize the current equipment and processes.

Bad news: It seems that *maybe* Amazon is offering aid in general to the administration, but, OTOH, the letter sent sure sounds like it's only concerned about getting their own workers vaccinated through an internal effort.

Good news: This is better than nothing. And essential workers do need to get ahead of the line over others.

Bad news: No way could Amazon have suggested this to the Trump administration since Trump hates Bezos and has looked for ways to hurt him.

I know there are some frustrating/disorganized parts about the vaccination process but most of it stems from the fact that there aren't nearly enough doses to meet demand yet even if the distribution and appointment process was done perfectly and no DPA order is going to change that.

I just don't understand how some people consider it an abject failure when over 15 million people have started the vaccine series barely a year after most people heard the word "coronavirus" for the first time. I mean, there had to be some kind of plan.

It was sometime during the week of 1/27 last year that I first saw a story about reports of a novel coronavirus discovered in the vicinity of Wuhan, China.

It is in the best interest of the new administration to make it look like they inherited a complete mess. That way, no matter how their tweaks to the plan work, they will look good as long as it is at least marginally better.

There haven't been enough doses delivered to the US from Pfizer and Moderna combined yet to vaccinate 5% of the population with a complete series. The reason everything is "a mess" and people have trouble getting appointments is that far more than 5% of the population wants to be vaccinated and vaccinated NOW.

Amazon or Ticketmaster (who has queue software for high demand events) can make a perfect appointment system and a huge number of people are still going to be SOL for a few weeks in the 65+ age group.

For those States giving smokers priority, what do you have to do to prove you smoke? Isn't this just going to lead to everybody saying they are at high risk because they smoke?

I have no problem with them helping with distribution either. Get Uber and Lyft involved too. Lots of drivers sitting around with nobody to drive to the bars or airports these days. So far it doesn’t seem like shipping has been an issue, it was lack of coordination with the shots themselves at first and then once some states got their acts together it turned into a lack of doses from the manufacturers. In the early phase most doses were done at hospitals and centralized sites so shipping larger quantities to a small number of sites. When they ramp up thousands of pharmacies the shipping will become more complicated so they may need more help.

"Essential workers" need to be in line behind the 65+ and people with high risk underlying conditions. Of course, everybody is going to be shoving each other out of the way to be deemed an "essential" worker.

The only reason that health care providers needed to be first in line is to keep doctors and nurses from having to miss a week or two of work for testing positive which could lead to a lack of enough personnel.

I am happy to share that yesterday evening whilst picking up a few things from the grocery store, I won the lottery and got one of those extra doses. Moderna.
I can report that overnight I had terrible sweats, and this morning I woke up with a fever of 100. My arm hurts soooo bad, I am starting to get a massive, MASSIVE headache, and I think some gastric issues. But its all worth it.
