Converting Real files

Here's a question for the techies out there.

Is it possible to convert Real media files to other file types? For instance, is there is a way I can take an .rm file and convert it to MP3?

There was a program out there a while ago that did just that...problem being is that Realmedia shut them down. The purpose of Real Audio/Video is to provide streamable un-copyable files to the masses...

To convert from real to mp3 i would suggest doing it the "Hard" way...by playing the real audio file..and using your sound card to record it into your favorite sound editing program..and then re-saving...

I thought there was a way to convert from RM to QT but I can't find it now.. The only way I know of is to capture it while playing.

You can always capture audio before it's output to speakers then convert it.

As for video+audio, it's not the greatest but you can use SnagIt or Camtasia to capture RealPlayer's output.

I used a program called EO Video to convert it to mpeg and you can then easily convert the audio from mpeg to mp3. I think I found the link for EO video on vcdhelp.com in the convert section.

TRON...

There is a program called "Wisecroft Ripper" that converts Real Media (.rm) to .wav files....then you have to convert from .wav to mp3...

..if you go to www.tucows.com and plug the name into the search engine, you should be able to find it...i think it's a shareware thingy and may have an evaluation period before you buy...

..you can also find the .wav to mp3 converter programs there too if you need it...

Good LucK...

If you are talking about converting live, streaming RM to MP3, there's a program called Streambox Ripper. It will allow you to capture the RM file to your harddrive. Then at least you can work with the RM file to get the audio out the hard way or with another program. I used a program called RA2WAV about a year ago. I am not sure if it is still around, but it worked perfectly to extract a WAV out from the RM. Then I think I used MusicMatch to make the WAV an MP3.
