Controversy about CARS

I'm sorry, but beating a train across the tracks is one of the oldest movies cliches in existence. Superman did it in the first movie. Homer Simpson did it when he was trying to out-race God.

IMHO, people who think their kids are going to run out and try something just because they saw it in a cartoon or movie or video game need to try being better parents.

The online version of the Chicago Sun Times just put up an article (and if you get the affordable disney update there is a link on there too). A father in one of the chicago suburbs is upset because his son did try to outrun a train and ended up killing his sister.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-carsmovie01.html

Next think you know the highway safety committee will be complaining about his speeding on the interstate, or environment activisits will complain about the gas emissions from the cars.....

I think all this controversy about "Cars" is so stupid. If Disney does decide to edit the film then why not put out two versions of the movie one that is edited and one that isn't.

Oh my gosh my daughter just watched The Little Mermaid and now I am afraid she is going to run off and get married at 16 just like Ariel! Ahhhhhhhhhh! What should I do?

Oh yea,…. step back into reality and not be an idiot! That works.

I have yet to see the movie, but it sounds like the scene of the car outrunning a train is the animators homage to an older Tex Avery MGM cartoon they probably looked at for inspiration. I forget the name of it, but the cars in this short had eyes on their windshields much like the characters in the movie, and the little car in the cartoon also tried to outrun a train, but ends up getting hit by it in the end. This was done in an even earlier cartoon about anthropomorphic cars as well. I think it must have been a popular game for speed demons back then, to try to outrun trains.

A dumb thing to do, and a dumb thing to complain about seeing it in a movie.

My God! What shall we do when the kids realize that Mater is riding in a helicopter without a seatbelt! And the door is *gasp* open! Surely now the number of seatbelt-less open-door helicopter-riding deaths will skyrocket!

Curse you, Pixar!

I am in lost in shock.......I mean where were these people when we needed to be protected from bunny rabbits and ducks with shotguns.....and coyotes with nefarious acme gimmicks? I can't imagine how we ever survived without their complaints to protect our lives.

Exactly!

In media studies we call this the 'third person theory' because the people making the claims assume that the media is powerful enough to inpact other peoples thinking but not their own (or their kids). It essentially is an insult to both parents and the whole concept of storytelling.

I thought it was cliche when I saw the film and didn't like the 'bit.' However it is a great film and thanks to the new court ruling, no one but Disney will be able to edit it out. (court ruling claimed 'clean' movies are actually copyright infringements).

Ok, here is my opinion, and if you keep reading, maybe you will understand why the opinion is based on fact:
I have 2 different family groups, one who shields their kids from EVERYTHING, thus the kids get their info from friends, not the parents...and another, who use tv shows, movies, or just about anything to stimulate conversation, and discuss right and wrong.
When we were small, we lived in a very rural area, with train tracks that ran behind the house. These were mostly coal trains that could run for over 20 minutes at times. My parents used to beat the train all the time, as there were no gates or flashing lights.
My sister, a week before her 18th birthday, went out to look at another car. A few minutes later, over the police scanner, My folks heard about an accident at the tracks. My dad and sister jumped in his truck, and went to see......My sisters small compact car had been hit by a train. There was NOTHING left of the car, or her. My Dad saw the whole accident scene. She was his favorite....naturally. The funeral home asked for clothing...my mom just kept saying "why" as there was nothing left to clothe.
So, does this mean I should fight to have the scene removed? No. It opens up conversations as to why its wrong....And as the result of my sisters accident, it has made the stae more aware of their responsibilities, and there are now gates and lights at the smallest crossings.....
My sister didnt learn to beat the trains from a movie, she learned it from my dad.....
