First off: whoo hoo!

Second:

The Tower rooms (in the main A-frame) at the Contemporary will be blocked off one-floor at a time, for refurbishment starting June 29, 2005 and work going until February 19, 2006.

I really like the mural too - but I was there the other day and thinking it needs to go if the place is going to maintain any sort of "contemporary" look.

Small changes in the lobby area have already started, things being painted the brown color rather than the green and purple. I'm assuming the lobby will be redone either during or right after the tower rooms are done.

Other places have reports the work will continue until early 2007, so i'm assuming that's for the other garden wing which hasn't started refurb yet, the time frame seems right.

Personally I love the mural... I would think that if they do remove it then they would have to change the name Grand Canyon Concourse as that is what gives it the feel and the look.

I remember staynig at the Contemporary in the late 1970s and early 1980s with my family while my father had his annual conventions at Disney. Two years in a row - Feb. 1981 and Feb. 1982 are the most memorable for me because I played a lot in the HUGE arcade on the first floor of the Contemporary.

I also remember the Kids of Disney (I think that is who they ware called) ... er .. no ... Kids of the Kingdom, yeah, that's it. They performed one night in one of the ballrooms at the Contemporary.

It was cool that one year it was just the Magic Kingdom and then the next year it was Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center.

I wonder if one of the restaurants at the Contempoary -- the one way in the back on the main concorse that is way back tucked in the corner back -- that if they still serve "D" shaped butter bars? You know the ones -- the D with the globe in the middle? Maybe not anymore since that was a long time ago.

Oh, and yes, I do remember the five-legged goat. Great memories of Disney. Always will have them and can't wait until I experience more soon -- hopefully in 2006 or 2007.

Ok, my first post/ reply ever. I visit practically every day and finally want to say hi. Thought I would give my two cents. I personally love the Contemporary, but have a little trouble considering it "contemporary" in its current state. Don't get me wrong, there aren't too many places in this world where you can step outside your door and have a beautiful Bombardier glide you to your destination.

I am so excited for this refurb. From the look of the model tower room I think Disney will bring the excitement back to the Contemporary once again. Makes me want to start saving my pennies now so I can stay there before the next refurb.

As for the mural in the concourse, it is a classic Mary Blair work. It almost seems Sac Religious to remove or modify it, but it has been done before...in Tomorrowland in Disneyland if I am not mistaken. Just an idea, perhaps they could change the color palate to relate to the new monochromatic scheme of the guestrooms. Imagine neutrals and metalics like copper and brushed aluminum, or even natural semi-precious stone colors. Natural elements never go out of style.

I agree completely. I also think that is something that could be done to "update" the mural. I love the mural, but I would love to see something along the lines of DL's IASW where the mural simply gets a new color overlay. I think just touches of natural stone, metals, etc. combined with sleek metalic finishes and spots of bright colors could really update the look and keep it styling for a long time.

Unfortunatly, I'm afraid if Disney truly wants to update the contemporary the mural has to go. Its extremly dated. I just hope its not destroyed. If it does wind up going I hope they preserve it some how, even if its preserved within the wall. I believe this is what they did to the murals in tommorowland in Disneyland. I know we wont be able to see it anymore but I kind of just like the mystery of knowing the mural is still back there ready to be discovered again years from now.

As I already mentioned I feel that if the mural is removed that they would need to change the name because the Grand Canyon Concourse would not be that same and is not a very Contemporary name.

So, what name would you pick or just leave it nameless as part of the Contemporary Resort.

They could just call it the Grand Concourse... makes sense to me! :D

I am a former cast memebr and my first job was at the Contemporary. It has and always will be my most favorite resort. I have seen the pics of the new rooms and they are fabulous however the mural MUST be kept!!! The Contemporary is Walt's first WDW resort and he had a hand in the creation of the place. It seems to me that even though WDW needs to keep moving and changing there needs to be some respect for the history of WDW and the man who started it all......... Mr. Walter E. Disney

LONG LIVE THE CONTEMPORARY FIVE LEGGED GOAT!!!

Netenyahoo, I was just thinking the same thing before I read your post about moving the mural to Wilderness Lodge. I think it would fit in very appropriately there. The mural is beautiful, but has nothing to do with the theming of the hotel to me. Also, what does the Grand Canyon have to do with the Contemporary?

Can someone direct me or show a link of how to see the model of the new rooms?

PS - How do I show the quote in the box when I want to quote someone else's post? Been wondering for a while and copy and paste doesn't quite seem to do the trick.

Here's a link to the pics, and you can compare with the current rooms too.

Click the little button that says "Quote" on the lower right-hand corner of the post.

EDIT: How smart is that? I forgot the link... hahahahaha... here it is- http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/g_contm.htm

With the new decor of the Contemporary rooms, I think this mural would fit quite well. As the Contemporary decor is now, the mural does NOT work. Especially with the 90's purple and turquoise. (What was their thinking?) But this IS a piece of artwork. It IS contemporary art. Think of all the art in the Guggenheim. It works there. I'd like to see the mural stay. It's a piece of Disney history as well as art history. Besides it would be an ordeal to remove since I believe the tiles contain asbestos...
