Any idea what the guy with the hose was doing??? Something on fire?? Or just to keep the dust down?

Keeping the asbestos out of the air.
I'm just wondering how much extra they are paying to have the entire wing demolished as asbestos instead of separating it first. They need to dispose of EVERYTHING as if it were asbestos, which is going to add a lot to the bottom line for the demo. Seems odd.

Are you sure about that? Around here the asbestos abatement must be done & signed off before anything else is done, even for a tear down. Besides, I thought we had pics earlier showing the abatement.

i'm with you mrerk - asbestos removal is a pretty tight and clean job - it has to be completed prior to knocking the structure down.

the water is there just to keep the concrete dust from blowing around

The hoses (water) are used for dust control. It works somewhat, but the car was pretty dirty after sitting in the lot in front of that for 3 days! If there were any asbestos left in the bldg, you can bet, especially at Disney, they would not just be knocking the bldg down like that. Amazing to see it go that fast! If i ever get around to it will post pics taken last week - they left alot of furniture inside the rooms, chairs, dressers, matresses even tubs & toilets!

I was going off of Jose's post on the first page.

When they knocked down an elementary school here, they did the same thing, coat everything with water to keep the asbestos from entering the air. Was a big deal because people didn't believe it was safe, but it was what they did. Its fairly common to do it that way if you're doing a complete demo as well, but like I said its not the cheapest or the smartest.

Sorry but that is flat out wrong, I know of no jurisdiction in the US that is exempt from EPA, HD, and OHSA regulations. All asbestos containing materials must be removed prior to general demolition except in extreme circumstances -

1.) The structure poses a safety threat

2.) The entire structure is treated as a containment zone.

3.) The level of possible friable asbestos containing materials (ACM's) are below thresholds.

Therefore unless they wrapped the entire elementary school with a double layered containment system under negative air pressure - the asbestos had already been removed. All ACM must also be clearly labeled and double bagged.

The use of the water hose is simple - dust control, not asbestos control - just simple dust control.

Very true...the asbestos has already been removed.

There are pictures of the asbestos removal/abatement elsewhere on this forum.
