Contemporary Concourse Refurb

I think most of us here embrace change. I think everyone will agree that the new rooms are a big step up. The lobby needs work and we know that. The big problem with the contemporary is that it has a huge identity crisis. This all stems from adding the convention center. When they added business clientel it went from a family friendly hotel to a more business oriented hotel which rubs most people on vacation the wrong way. For example, when I am sporting my flops, speedo, and towel and I am standing next to a bunch of stiffs in suits on the elevator I feel like a loser. :lookaroun I am on vacation to get away from that atmosphere. For some reason the other convention hotels can get away with but the contemporary doesn't. Every body mingles to much and it makes for everyone feeling uncomfortable. I find it funny they are thinking of adding DVC that should make this hotel completely disfunctional. I am in the corner of making this a family focused hotel since its so close to the happiest place on earth. Right now its a waste of prime real estate, do you think the suits who are there for work really care about the location of this hotel? Or care about the fireworks or the monorail flowing through the concourse? I bet not. Eliminating the convention center would solve a lot of problems unfortunately that will never happen. To sum it up, I miss the 80's version of the contemporary.

I completely agree. I feel the same when we're at the Dolphin (which I realize is not a 'true' Disney hotel) but they seem to have similar problems on this issue. They totally cater to the business traveler but this IS supposed to be the happiest place on earth and seeing people in suits walking around and their little cocktail parties all the time, ruins the vacation feel for me....and the speedo in the elevator comment is too funny! I don't seem to notice the conventions as much at the other resorts.

I understand what you're saying but unfortunately you can't fault the Dolphin for catering to the business class. After all, without being owned by Disney as you said, they can't be expected to totally cater to the vacationer.

As far as feeling bad about being around those "suits" - imagine how they feel! They're there and have to do work-related stuff while they watch people on vacation getting to have all the fun. Personally I'd much rather being in the elevator in a bathing suit.

I am totally for a refurbishment, I am just saying I like the feel of the hotel from the 1980's rather than the 90's to the present version. The vibe in the hotel now is a little to stuffy and formal for a vacation atmosphere. If they could somehow seperate the two crowds (business vs vacation) I think it would help the Contemporary a great deal. Maybe a name change could help out. I mean if they can change Dixie Landings why not the Contemporary. I think the word contemporary is hard to live up to and constantly presents challenge's to the designers. My idea of contemporary is probably different than yours, so there will always be people saying this hotel isn't very "contemporary".
I can't recall where, but I believe when I was reading information about the refurbs at the Contemporary and Polynesian, the article (Orlando Sentinel perhaps?) said that while both resorts will be family-friendly, Disney intends to cater more to business travelers at the Contemporary and more to family travelers at the Polynesian. Conventions are highly lucrative to Disney, so it makes sense to target them in some way.

Wow, I haven't been keeping up with this one. If the arcade is going to the 4th floor, what's down on the 1st floor in the old location?

When I spoke to a CM a few months ago, and asked about the rumored changes, she said that the Concourse Steakhouse {with possibly a new name} was going where the snack bar and the video game area are. I guess they would have to change the name since it won't be on the concourse anymore, no?

the conventioneers are not happy with the current situation of no bar or restaurant not surrounded by children. CR has had MANY complaints.

Please don't take offense to this ddank but I had to laugh when I read this quote - this IS DisneyWorld isn't it? Maybe those conventioneers should have their meetings somewhere else next time if they don't want to be "surrounded by children". ha, ha, ha

And - as it has been stated a few times in this thread, the CR cannot be contemporary if it doesn't progress. Granted, the ideas of the original CR (with the modular rooms being removed and replaced) can no longer happen, but I believe that some change is good.
Sorry, I am compelled to fight this urban legend wherever it arises. The Contemporary (and the Poly) were both modularly constructed, but it was never it in the original design, nor does it make a lick of sense, for them to have been taken apart for remodelling.

I believe the point is, if Disney is providing a convention center, one of the nicer ones I've ever seen, then one would assume the standard accompaniments (like a bar) would be available as well. Many companies choose to hold conventions in and around Orlando so employees can bring their families, but that doesn't mean they want to spend every free hour with children, theirs or otherwise. Disney is known around the world for doing many things well, not just catering to children.

Has anyone been to Disney recently in the past week or so that can confirm whether construction is ongoing in the Concourse and whether the outer rim lounge and/or concourse steakhouse is closed??

Terrific! I'm staying there Labor Day weekend but we were considering changing resorts if the Stores, Lounge and Steakhouse are closed. Thanks so much. Hope you have a magical trip!
