I ate here in May or April, and they had the touch screen ordering things similar to Be Our Guest, they have been replaced with regular register type machines. Were they in testing? Or did something happen?

The touch screens were down when I was there earlier this month, they had you order at the register and take a number and your food was brought to your table.

The drink machines and many other areas of the cafe needed to be maintained better as getting soda was a pain, one of the machines didn't want to pour soda at all (wouldn't recognize RFID).

Captain Cooks at the Poly also did away with the screens apparently. Ordering at the registers isn't efficient at all, as there are only typically 1-2 cashiers and it's hard to even see the menu. At peak times it was quite a nightmare. Minor sure the screens are even the answer, but a CM writing down orders prior to paying would help a lot (as is typically done at Mara at AKL).

I actually find it pretty easy and don't normally wait long if at all. And it's psychological too, before you had to go to the screens and then stand and wait for your food. Now you may wait a bit longer at the register than at the kiosk, however, you get to find a seat, get a drink and they bring your food out to you.

It's the way the fast food world is moving.

First, I think most guests prefer live CM's to kiosks. Look at any store with electronic kiosks, and you'll find most customers prefer live staff, unless they have a small number of items. When there's a problem, you need a live person to fix it. Waiting is annoying.

Second, the thing that makes the WDW kiosks odd is that guests expect traffic to flow in one direction, as the cafeteria at the Contemporary once did.

That's a big "unless." When you're talking about grocery stores, it's faster to dump your stuff on the conveyor belt while the employees scan and bag for you. Those are different kinetics than when you're ordering at a touch-screen empty-handed. Given the choice between a person and a kiosk, I'll pick whichever one has shorter lines. I think this way leads to shorter transaction times in a QSF&B situation because it separates ordering and paying. As soon as your order, the kitchen can start on your food.

I actually don't prefer a screen but a CM who assists guests with their order prior to going to the register. Last week at the Poly, lines were wrapping around that very small space due to guests trying to figure out large orders for their entire party. Captain Cooks simply isn't big enough for one stop ordering during peak times. I felt bad for anyone simply wanting to grab a quick snack or drink as it really wasn't an option. Even navigating the area to refill mugs was difficult due to the line at the cashier. One extra CM taking orders down prior to paying would have alleviated most of the congestion. Either that or have all four registers open, something we never saw while there.

Perhaps this is true for you, but not everyone feels the same way. Many people, given equal lines, will choose a live CM if they have a choice. Not all, just many.

I think customers with food allergies, intolerances, or even simple aversions to common ingredients generally find talking to live CM is the easier way to avoid a problem.

The other half my post though was about the odd flow of the kiosks. That's really my bigger concern..

Contempo has had this for at least two years, if not three.

I thought they had it when they opened

Probably more than 5 years now since the touch screen order stations were installed which was when the Contempo Café opened.

I like them now, but the first time is used one I was like a deer in the headlights trying to figure what I really wanted. Now I think it is faster since there never seems to be a line at them when I am there. I place the order and move to coolers and pick-out anything else I want and head to the check-out line. The worst thing is that usually there still seems to be a line waiting to pay for your orders.:banghead:

My mama always taught me to go to a person over a computer, because that computer was making someone's job obsolete. Personally, I like the interaction with CMs.. I feel like the little things make the best memories on vacation.

The kiosks were SO beneficial to use here. Place your order, pay at register and get buzzer, find a seat, wait on food to be done, pick up food and enjoy!
