I'm currently looking for a new laptop. My old one, though reliable, is big and difficult to travel with. Any opinions on a laptop that is portable, fast and relatively cheap?

Do not buy a Gatway! A few years ago my mother's Gatway computer had soo many problems. I love Dell! My husband has a Dell laptop & I have a Dell desk top! We love Dell!!

Good luck! :sohappy:

Woody13, you gave a link to a site that you were logged in to [or was using cookies to track what you were looking at]. As a result, when someone else clicks on the link all they get is a message saying their session has timed out! Just suggest a laptop, rather than advertising for the store...

I've always heard good reports about Toshibas. My wife has had one for almost three years and it is doing fine (having said that, it will probably die tomorrow!).

I've heard mostly good reports about Dell laptops, but we've had trouble with some at work. But, knowing some of the people who use them, it could be more of an abuse issue than a Dell issue.

I've also heard good things about IBM and Sony, but they tend to add more high end features that you may not need or be willing to pay for. Sony seems to be pushing the wide screen models. The only advantage I can see to the wide screen is if you plan on using your laptop for a lot of DVD watching.

I was just at Circuit City this morning and they had some sale prices and rebates going on some of the Toshibas, pretty good deals for around $1100 to $1300. Certainly shop the other electronic stores and get the best deal you can.

In case you didn't know this, get a laptop with a minimum of 512 MB ram. And ask if more ram can be added. Many laptops share the system ram with graphics memory.

Good luck with your decision!:)

I have had good experiences with the Gateway laptops. You might want to check out the Gateway 7330GZ laptop at Best Buy. I am not trying to advertise Best Buy, but this product is only sold there. It is the fastest laptop I have seen (3GHz, vs. 1.5 or 1.7 GHz), there is lots of memory (512MB, expandable to 1.5GB), it is portable (not very large or heavy). If you want to upgrade the memory, look at online stores (I have gotten computer parts for less than half the retail price).

Yeah, because it's so darned complicated clicking on a couple of links to get back to the laptops, isn't it?

If you're one of those people who uses Windows, the Averatec laptops are small and cheap, but I've never had one so I don't know how good they really are. I had a Dell laptop and I hated it. Sony is good but pretty expensive. I've heard good things about Toshiba. eMachines?

A lot depends are what you are looking to do with what applications you will be using on the laptop. It sounds like you are concerned with the weight of the laptop.

Dell and HP are quality models, depending on what model you choose. The less expensive the model the more low quality parts are in the laptop.

Having said that, Dell would be my first choice. You have to be careful with HP as the local consumer store laptops are not high on quality. They are more concerned with the lowest price.

If you give a price range I can post some links.

It really does depend on what you are using it for. I will suggest Dell. In my experience (I supervise 19 technicians that install and maintain PC/Laptops in Boston for a very large national company) they are a better quality than HP or Compaq. Sony is usually very expensive. I have a Dell for work and for personal use and I love it.

I would be using the computer for travel and school. I need something portable for carrying around between classes and for quick photo downloads/organizing while on vacation.

I don't typically watch DVDs on my computer, and the only game I play is Mah Jong Solitaire.

I do know to get plenty of ram, though I may just add more after I buy the computer.

Not knowing the price range, it's hard to recommend. Although this is a nice system for the price. You could take the defaults and add a carry case for $40.00

Go with a Dell. Add the memory now. When my wife goes back to school full time in September I will be getting her a Dell Laptop. A Celeron processor may be just as good for what you need as a Pentium chip. You should be able to get a nice laptop for a decent price.

One thing you might want to watch for on the system you pick out: the operating system version. On many corporate and college networks, you have to have Windows XP Professional (not Media Center or Home Edition) to be able to logon to a domain controller (in simpler terms- use the network). It would depend on how the network is setup.
