Can Someone explain what is the point of being a d23 member? What will it get us?

It's the official Disney club for Disney fans.

I've been a member since it first started in 2009, and D23 hasn't disappointed me yet. Then again, I live in Los Angeles. I'll get back to that point later. There's a Silver and a Gold membership. The only difference between the two is the Gold gets you a subscription to four seasonal magazines. The magazines are very beautiful and detailed, but the thing is you can buy them at Barnes & Noble or eBay (sometimes people on eBay will sell it to you for a bigger price). Besides the magazines, the biggest perk both memberships provide is special events hosted by D23, which leads me to my point on living in Los Angeles.

Although D23 hosts a lot of events each year, maybe 97% of them are ALWAYS in SoCal, near the Los Angeles area or not too far away. They've yet to host anything outside the US. I have been to over ten events D23 has hosted, and in fact I'm going to one next Thursday night/Friday morning. So I get the magazines and the special events. I even came runner-up in a writing contest they had and they sent me a prize. I've also been featured in Disney Geek of the Week, a D23 video and I've been in some of their photos. As you might guess, I'm very happy with D23. You can also probably guess why everyone who doesn't live in Los Angeles, or Los Angeles County, does not like D23, and I bet foreigners probably really don't like D23. You pay all that money and they don't host one event in your area. I would imagine it sucks. People also complain about having to pay for the events (some of them are free, some are cheap, some are in the middle and some are just downright expensive). So there you have it.

I don't want to look like totaly loser but can someone give me a proper description of what D23 is and what you get for it...I am a DVC memeber and read it in Disney Files but I am still a little confused. :)
o to the D23 site at D23.com. YOU get to attend s[ecial events that non-members dont. Meet Disney Legends at the some events. I attended Magic and Merriment in WDW and got to tour the Castle Suite and my 9 yr old daughter just loved the fact she got to see it. There are pros and Cons to membership. I like the magazine and events. Is it worth it sometimes I feel it isnt because some of the events are too expensive or 2 far away to attend. But I am a charter Member and just love Disney so what do ya do. I love it.

DVC members website still has D23 as being 10% off discount. I wonder if they are just waiting until the new year begins to show the new perk.;)

I've been putting off D23 mostly because it would largely go to waste for me. I know you get the magazine, and some trinkets, but for me the big selling point is the events, which I would almost never be able to do.

But I'm sure I'm not alone on this - the mere existence of this "club" is too much for me to pass up for too long. I'm incredibly weak with Disney.

That said, I've still wanted to join for a while, I just haven't yet. So just having to pay the upgrade price will be a nice discount incentive to finally get the gold membership.

When D23 first started there was a whole "is it worth it" discussion. The major point of contention was that the membersip dues were just about the same ( a buck or two more if I recall) as buyng the magazine at cover price. There was a big discussion about were the added perks worth it, was "exclusive" merch that you could get on eBay worth it, was admittiance to the events worth it, etc. People who were joining D23 were told they were "drinking the Disney Kool-Aid" and that we were behaving as sheep, buying whatever Disney puts out, and so on. I went into D23 with open eyes. I figured it could become something very good, and if it evolved into someething that I really enjoyed, then being a charter member was worth it to me. Over the course of the first year, I evaluated what they were doing, and what was made available and when the time to renew came, I decided the membership was not worth it - to ME. I think many people who were charter members still have an aversion to discussing if it is worth it. Even though they decided it was worth it to THEM, they were told by many on these boards that they were being stupid, they were part of what was becomming the commercialization of Disney, and were pretty much openly mocked. A number of people went so far as to form "anti D23" groups. I myself thought that was quite derisive and was causing some tension on the board, but I never need anyone to validate my decisions so I just watched the fighting slowly end. I didn't mean to dredge up those memories or feelings with my remarks about the cookies and soda (those were remarks that were typical during the D23 roll out)

The commercialization of Disney - that is hilarious.

I'd take it with open arms, been wanting to purchase one, but will wait now to see if it is true. Any news if the Premium pass is only for sure done after Dec 31st?
