Trip Report ** COMPLETED ** You left your babies at HOME? Heck yes we did!

SighI’ve been meaning to start this report for a while! It did happen almost 4 months ago, but with my last trip report dragging on, end of school and an early summer vacation, life had different plans!

Anyway, let’s gooo!

The quick deets:

Who: Me and my wife K

When: February 25 - March 3
Where: GF villas and Wilderness Lodge

As for the why and how we got here: The short story is that we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary.

There is a lot more to it than that though -

We knew for the last 2 years we wanted to go away for our 10 year, but could not figure out where. We toyed with everything from an all-inclusive beach vacation, to England, to our other favorite Cape May and everything in between. We realized though we are not just sit on the beach people anymore - we are busy, and like to be going and doing things. When the pictures of the Wish came out, it seemed perfect. Romantic and fancy, enough of a Disney touch, and we get to get to the beach too. All of our favorite things! So we booked a 4 day cruise, and since we were traveling to a Florida anyway, we booked a 2 night stay at Grand Floridian by renting DVC points (figuring we would never stay there in the near future with kids).

And then a wrench was thrown - the Wish actually sailed, and reviews were less than ideal.

We tried to ignore them, but so many of the negatives were focused on the adult side of things, with the positives being the kids areas. In the end, we just weren’t excited anymore and with the best parts being the kids areas, it did not seem to be a good way for us to spend our money. So we cancelled, but we still had that 2 night stay at GF, and with it being a point rental, we could not really cancel. Luckily, a Disney+ promotion had just came out, and we were able to score a great deal on a WL room! And so the trip was born!

You can never go wrong with celebrating a wedding anniversary at WDW. 😉❤️
Happy Anniversary to you too!!
I am in and following. Den and I are hoping to get away in November for a long weekend sans kids to Disney. Everyone needs adult time!
It was so great! You don’t realize all the little things that you can do differently without them. We definitely did miss them (some days more than others), but we have no regrets!

In some ways, our vacation started on the 24th. My in-laws were going to be watching the kids and dogs at our house, and with our early flight the next day, we decided to trade houses for the night. They came over after dinner, and once we put the kids down to bed and said our good byes, we left.

All though they do tend to sleep well, just not having that responsibility felt like a huge a break! It was weird being in a house just the two of us, no kids, no dogs. But then we realized we had to wake up in 6 hours, so we quickly went to bed and struggled to fall asleep in a different house lol

3:30 came around pretty quick, and the first thing I did was check to see if our flight was on time.

And it wasn’t.

Our 6 am flight was showing a 9 am departure. This is now the 3rd time I’m flying out of Newark, and the 3rd time that my flight has been delayed.

Our car was coming at 4, and part of me was tempted to see if we could push it back, but realized it was a bit too late, and even if we did push it back, we would still have to leave before the kids woke up. And maybe the app was wrong!

It was amazing just how fast we could get ready without the kids and their last minute things, and were ready in less than 20 minutes. Our car came right on time, and hit 0 traffic on the way to the airport. I think we saw less than 10 cars until we got to the off ramp.

Just like at MCO, JetBlue just opened a fancy new terminal at Newark (maybe they should invest in more planes or better technology, but I digress). You can do all the check in, bag check etc automated, but since we wanted to check on our flight we got into a surprisingly long line. We had assumed it was people on our flight, but it turns out that international flights were not showing bags that had been pre-paid. Again, JetBlue needs better technology.

The person at the desk was less than helpful when we asked about our flight (the 9 am is estimated, could be earlier or later, the flight was delayed from the night before, but is on the way etc) I asked if we could get on the 7 am flight, but she told us it was full (which we found out later to not be true). Oh well.

Normally waiting in an airport for 3 hours would be a nightmare (especially with kids in tow). But I had a book, K had a show to catch up on, and we figured we could get a sit down meal.

We explored the terminal a bit, and got a great breakfast at a local place in the airport. We didn’t take pictures of the food, but I had a very filling breakfast sandwich with 2 fried eggs, applewood smoked bacon, and white cheddar cheese, and K had a frittata, with burrata, prosciutto, tomato and arugula. For 5 am, it very much but the spot!

We still had 2 hours to kill by the time we were done, so we read, watched some tv., explored the terminal, and talked to the kids when they woke up.

Airport living!

We also got to watch a pretty sunrise!

The flight itself was uneventful. While JetBlue technology leaves some things to be desired, the pilots are usually great. This one hauled, and we made it to Florida in record time.

However, our luggage did not make it in record time. We waited, and waited, and after almost an hour our bags finally showed up. Being a special trip, we splurged on a car this time, and our driver waited with us. He told us that his boss warned him that luggage in the new terminal has been taking ages lately, so once again, JetBlue needs some help.

Anyway, we were soon on our way!

If anyone is looking for a transportation, I highly recommend Black Diamond - they were awesome. A bit pricey, but not out of the range for other private cars, and they were super communicative, friendly and helpful.

In the car I had to cancel our lunch at GF Cafe we were planning on. I had pushed it back when the plane was delayed, and with the luggage issues we were going to be cutting it real close. As much as we wanted the Lobster burger, we didn’t want to rush, and we also had a big night of eating planned, so something lighter seemed better.

We made it!

For reference, the time stamp on this was 1 pm. Our original flight was supposed to land at 9 am. Our actual flight landed just after 11 am, but with the luggage issues, it took us almost 2 hours to make it here.

We hadn’t yet received a room ready text, but figured we would ask if something was ready (it wasn’t).

I really loved the lobby on the Villas side. I know some people say it isn’t as Grand, but I disagree (or maybe I’m not a Grand person!). But it’s also quieter, so we took some time to just sit and call home.

I also strangely loved the smell over here which seemed very different than the main building. We took some time just walking along the water and enjoying the warm weather, hoping our room would be ready soon. It was a mild winter back home, but the sun still felt great!

After 20 minutes or so we gave up and brought our bags to bell services to hold, and made our way over to the pool bar to grab a light lunch.

1687834435887.jpeg

K got a lobster roll, which she really enjoyed and a Miami Vice, which was our go to drink on our honeymoon. I got the Chicken Caesar Salad with Pineapple croutons, which was literally a bowl of lettuce, grilled chicken, pieces of pineapple and a bag of Ken’s Caesar dressing. Not what I expected, but it was very fresh, and Pineapple goes surprisingly well with Caesar, who knew!

Also something to note is I stopped drinking at the beginning of the year, so as much as I wanted to indulge, I behaved and got an Iced Tea.

As we were finishing up, we got our room ready text!
