Trip Report COMPLETED: Christmas Week 2013: Nevermind the crowds, what's with all the churros?

Welcome to my Christmas Week 2013 Trip Report!

Dates Traveled: December 22-December 27

Basic info: Port Orleans French Quarter Resort (second stay), 5 day Park Hopper and Deluxe Dining Plan.

Our family:

Jonah, age 5. This is his second trip to WDW (first was in May 2012 when he was 3.5). He's a huge Star Wars fan, a big Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Goofy and Pluto fan and a princess fan, as well. His current Princess ranking is as follows: 1) Tiana, 2) Rapunzel, 3) Aurora, 4) Snow White and 5) Ariel.

Eddie, the birthday boy, age 43 as of this trip. This is his 3rd trip to WDW (he doesn't remember the first in 1975) and he's a Star Wars, Goofy and Baloo fan.

Me, Sue, age 43. Huge Minnie Mouse fan, Star Wars fan, princess fan, lover of rides of all kinds.

Eddie and I visited WDW in May 2012 to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We took along our son, Jonah, who was almost 4 at the time (we were married for 16 years before he was born because of long term infertility. Since he's been born we try to celebrate every moment that we can, and for Christmas 2013, that meant going where the MAGIC happens!).

I started planning our Christmas week trip beginning January 2013. Initially, we planned for our best friends (a couple without kids) to join us and the 5 of us to stay in a Ft. Wilderness Cabin. They backed out on the trip early on, so we changed our plans to the POFQ since we'd stayed there before, loved it, and felt it would be familiar since we knew our Christmas trip would have the uncertainty of holiday crowds and My Magic. We decided to drive to save money (we did not save money driving) and bought a 2013 Kia Soul to make the road trip easier (as far as road trips go, it wasn't bad). Here we go!

DECEMBER 20th
We left Oklahoma City at 12:30 p.m., right after Jonah's school Christmas party ended and his school break began. We drove to Forrest City, AR, before we were stopped by a huge rain storm (Oklahoma City had a massive ice storm that night and Edmond, OK, OKC's northern suburb, made national news with the amount of ice it received. Thousands were out of power. We were extremely grateful to just be stuck in AR in a roadside motel in the rain).

DECEMBER 21st
Our original plan was to spend the night with family in Memphis, but after spending the night on the AR/TN border, we pushed on to our reservation in Tallahassee, FL. There was NO traffic in Mississippi. It was eerie. Like, "Walking Dead" eerie. Also? What's up with the Magnolia State's love of Bryan Adams? I must have heard the entire "Reckless" album, something that hadn't occurred since sleepovers in middle school. Isn't Bryan Adams Canadian? (Eddie: "I believe he's the Canadian Bruce Springsteen.") Well, anyway, he rocked me through the Winter of '13.

Road trip warrior. He ate string cheese, watched "Tangled" and "Aladdin" and played 8 million Leap Pad games, plus Palace Pets on my iPhone. Zero whining.

December 22

We're here!
2013-12-22095914_zps4882179e.jpg

We arrived at Downtown Disney at 9:45 a.m. and, worried about the issues with parking and construction we'd read about, parked over near La Nouba, even though we were going to the Marketplace. We did not need to park near La Nouba, there was still plenty of parking. Oh, well! A walk through DTD upon first arrival wasn't terribly annoying. The weather was great...it was around 75 degrees and would only get warmer.

Once we arrived at the Marketplace, I attempted to direct the boys to World of Disney to buy ears, but Jonah was distracted by the Lego Store. I decided, instead, to head to Team Mickey to get our Photo Pass card (we ordered Photo Pass two days before Memory Maker was announced). I was directed to a HUGE Guest Services line (the longest line I saw all week) and stood in it for a few minutes and then thought, this can't be right. There were unoccupied Photo Pass CMs across the room. Finally I asked Eddie to see if they could help him (so I didn't lose my place in line) and, of course, the Photo Pass desk WAS where we were supposed to be (this was the first of two erroneous bits of direction I received from a DTD CM about their Guest Services area). Eddie took this to mean he was the Photo Pass Commander and wore the lanyard all week. I was A-OK with that.

I found a Minnie headband with the old-fashioned Classic Minnie hat with flowers and feathers. Jonah turned down my suggestion of an R2 earhat (he's not a fan of the way earhats feel) and opted instead for a black, glow-in-the-dark Jedi Mickey ballcap. Eddie went to get the Goofy bucket ear hat he liked last year and discovered that it was too small for his head! So was the Pluto ballcap. And the Donald earhat. And the Chip and/or Dale plush hat. Are we seeing a pattern? He's finishing up his PhD this year...so check out the big brain (or skull) on Eddie! Two out of three whimsical Disney hats purchased, we headed off to T-Rex for our 11:00 a.m. lunch reservation.

His Dr. Pooh shirt was a Christmas gift from his godparents who were unable to join us on this trip.

He drank the entire thing. He doesn't eat much, but he can imbibe big time.

In case you ever wondered what the Jurassic Chicken Tidbits at T-Rex look like:
2013-12-22112334_zps56eb291d.jpg

Eddie and Jonah picked T-Rex for our lunch reservation on arrival day, and I was happy to let them, since I (over)planned everything else. I would have chosen Raglan Road, but hey -- I like a good Stegosaurus as much as the next non-8 year old. I had the Footprints Flatbread, which was HUGE and would have fed all three of us comfortably. Although we were on the Deluxe Dining Plan, we paid out of pocket for this meal since we were using a lot of our dining credits for the (three) 2-credit meals we had planned. I only ate two small pieces of my flatbread because I was saving room for later, and while I enjoyed the mélange of cheddar, Parmesan, cilantro, pizza sauce, carmelized onion and balsamic glaze, I found the chicken tasted over-processed, almost canned (although it was not canned). Eddie had the Bronto Burger and loved it, said it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had. I barely glanced at it because I was too busy watching Jonah watch the meteor shower and the animatronics. We sat in the aquarium area and although it was LOUD, it wasn't super busy and our service was pretty fast (we checked in 10 minutes early and were seated within 5 minutes of checking in).

We looked some more for a hat for Eddie (fruitlessly, in the non-Carmen Miranda way), promised Jonah he could come back later to the Lego Store to pick up the Star Wars set with Ahsoka Tano (she's his favorite) and then we stopped in at Ghirardelli for dessert. I have visited the flagship store in San Francisco, but we hadn't been able to work the DTD Ghirardelli into our 2012 visit and I had REALLY talked it up to the guys.

Eddie's a big fan of butterscotch, so I offered to split the Butterscotch Hot Fudge Sundae with him. Since I am NOT a big fan of butterscotch, he took this as the Christmas miracle it was intended and eagerly agreed. Alas, I didn't read the ingredients carefully and didn't realize until we dug in that the sundae was made with butter-pecan ice cream, not vanilla. Eddie doesn't do butter pecan, and since the butterscotch topping was buried in the bottom of the glass, he was underwhelmed. I ate the delicious, not-of-this-earth hot fudge *and* the butter-pecan ice cream (I'm secretly an old lady, I like hard candies and Lawrence Welk, too!) and ignored the butterscotch sludge at the bottom of the glass. Someone, however, was totally pleased:

SPRINKLES!!!

Coming up:
Trying to check-in at POFQ before 3:00 p.m. and taking the bus to the Magic Kingdom at 3:30 p.m. the week of Christmas. Are we wacky on the nuts (and sprinkles)????

December 26, continued

Let the memories begin! He was agreeable to this pic and seemed to be feeling great. Our last Disney night was a go!
578411_10202752868252416_551172242_n.jpg

We took the train from the Main Street station to Frontierland. The cars were pretty full, and LOL at the teenage boys who thought they could stretch their legs across the entire seats and save them. Yeah, it's not February, mister. From the train, we were dumped out at Splash into an ENORMOUS crowd, but luckily there were CMs holding up "FP+" signs like chauffeurs at the airport.

The standby line for Splash the day after Christmas at 4:00 p.m. was wacky. I wish I had taken a picture. I know a took a pic of Splash, but for some reason only had this one on my camera.

Photo Pass Plus Pic
SplashMountain_zpsae14210f.jpg

Jonah LOVES this ride. He rode it on our 2012 trip when he was 3, and he played Splash Mt with our recliner and a jump rope for weeks after, haha. He was so excited as we were going through the FP+ queue. When we got to the CM who directs guests from the FP+ and guests from the standby line into the loading area, he waved us through. A gentleman in the standby line erupted, saying he had been waiting in line for 3 hours. I'm sure there was SLIGHT exaggeration there, but I still ducked, feeling guilty about my FP+ until I remembered that the legacy fast pass was still available for Splash and was STILL available when we went back at 8:00 p.m.

We got a particularly stinky flume (old mildewy water smell) and I sat on the right side, which was dumb, since I had the most hair to protect and I got the wettest! Jonah got a few splashes and was gleeful (he LOVES water rides, too bad it wasn't warmer). He loved it so much and wanted to ride again that after, Eddie pulled a legacy FP for us to return at 8:30.

I shook my hair out and repaired my lip gloss but I STILL smelled like old stinky water even after washing my hands. That was unfortunate, because we were heading to dinner at a place where our hosts would be wearing ballgowns!

photo4_zps203d82d4.jpg

We arrived a bit early for our 4:55 reservation so we killed some time at Sir Mickey's. Eddie found some antenna toppers (Mickey ears, glass slipper) for some of his coworkers and then we headed to check in 10 minutes before our reservation.

Cinderella_zpsa414cf0a.jpg

Our PP picture with Cinderella turned out great, and then we only had about 5 minutes to wait before we were being called to our table. Jonah loved the winding staircase, and then we ended up here:

Not quite window, but window adjacent.

What else does one wear to dinner in a castle but Minnie ears and a rhinestone Snow White t-shirt? Oh, and post-Splash Mt hair.

Our server was a little gruff (we're talking Roz from Monsters Inc.) but she was quick and thorough. Jonah had a kid's salad and chicken nuggets and he ate both! Eddie and I both ordered the bone-in pork chop and it was DENSE, hah. My butternut squash was delicious. The highlight, though, were the starters.

Eddie's cheese plate. We're HUGE cheese eaters in this family, and although this wasn't as complex as the Yachtsman's cheese plate, Eddie enjoyed it.

Castle salad. This was a great, crunchy winter salad.

What more does a boy need other than a sword and chicken nuggets?
Sword_zps15e29b30.jpg

The Clock Strikes Twelve. Eddie and I both enjoyed this even though we didn't eat much of it (we had the Dessert Party coming up). The chocolate numbers were particularly fun.
1546083_10202752869252441_1039955817_n.jpg

The princesses were announced as we were eating dinner, but we were seated over in a small nook and it took a while until they started making it over our way. We had finished dessert (granted, Eddie and I didn't eat much of it) before Snow White got to us.

This was our 3rd Snow White. Er, I mean the third time we saw her. ;) Jonah was quiet at first and Eddie explained that it was nice to see her again, but Jonah was a little shy. Snow quickly said, "Oh, that's alright, one of my best friends is Bashful!" which she had said to him at Epcot, so Jonah turned to me and said, "Does she know she's already said that?!" Haha.
SnowWhite_zps23e109c9.jpg

I love this pic! I wonder what they're talking about? Snarfblats? Laryngitis? While we were waiting for her and she was talking to other guests, Jonah said, "I really like Ariel. She's my 5th favorite princess," and Eddie had to tell him, "Well, don't tell HER that!" LOL
1488325_10202752800090712_1228879254_n.jpg

We really hoped that Aurora would be here since we hadn't had a chance to meet her yet. We talked about how much we liked the fairies changing her dress, and she said she could never choose, either. After talking with her in person, she was bumped up into the top 5 of Jonah's princess list.
1549551_10202752800490722_1968004926_n.jpg

We had been expecting Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel and Aurora at CRT, so we were super surprised and happy when they announced Jasmine! We were afraid we weren't going to get to meet her, since we'd missed her at Epcot, and she's one of my favorites. She and Jonah discussed the dangers of giving monkeys lightsabers.
1538749_10202752800650726_1146072568_n.jpg

By the time Jasmine got to us, Jonah had lost his shyness and had his autograph book in hand waiting for her. I had been unsure about doing both Akershus and CRT, afraid that he wouldn't be all that into the princesses in person, but he LOVED them. He enjoyed the princesses because they could talk to him, while I think he finds Mickey and the gang a little intimidating because they don't talk.

Bye, Cindy! Thanks for a great time.
1560424_10202752801090737_639031925_n.jpg

It was COLD once we exited CRT. The sun had gone down and the temperature had dropped dramatically. While Jonah had his jacket in his backpack, Eddie and I had gone without, so Eddie decided to go out to the car (in the Simba parking lot) to get our jackets. Jonah and I grabbed a legacy FP for Dumbo and wandered around Storybook Circus for a bit.

We realized that while we'd gotten a pic with Donald at Tusker House, he hadn't autographed Jonah's book, so we jumped in line to meet him again. The queue was less than 15 minutes since we skipped the Goofy option. By this time (our last character meet on our very last night) Jonah was fine with asking Donald for his autograph and taking the pic on his own.
donald_zps9aabd30d.jpg

I really like the shopping and treat area of the Storybook Circus. We wandered around for a bit and chatted with a few people. Eddie texted and asked us to jump on the train in Fantasyland and meet him in Frontierland for our Splash FP. It was time for our Dumbo FP, so Jonah and I headed that way (after trashing his leftover Icee from Storybook Circus, because you can't take drinks on Dumbo!).

Dumbo at night. This is still THE iconic MK ride for me, but for some reason it seems to go higher at night. Beautiful views of the castle and New Fantasyland.
photo_zps0d7afde3.jpg

We caught the train at the Fantasyland station and at 8:30 it was PACKED. We squeezed in with another family and made our way over to the Main Street station where the other family disembarked. I was sitting there with Jonah, shivering while we waited for the train to start again, when I heard, "Sue!" and looked over to see Eddie running up to our bench. He had ended up at the main gate at the same time our train stopped. Christmas magic!

We rode the train to a MUCH quieter Frontierland. There was no need for our FP because the line for Splash had dwindled as it got colder. We bundled up in our jackets, put Jonah in the middle and snuggled all together. There were only 2 other people in our flume, making it lighter and the drops cause less Splash. We noticed halfway through that Jonah's Jedi Mickey hat glowed in the dark! That, and a second ride on Splash, made his night. Our drop down the big falls gave us all a little splash, and we were all toasty warm from being snuggled together.

Afterward, I stopped in the SM gift shop and paid $30 for a pair of extra-small sweat pants for Jonah. I didn't even regret it -- we still had plenty of money on our gift card, it was our last day and hey, a souvenir he'll use for every day. And he was warm!

It was after 9:00, so we quickly made our way over to Tomorrowland for the Dessert Party. We got cut off by the Main Street Electrical Parade, but Eddie found a shortcut behind the loading area in Tomorrowland and it didn't take us long to get the dessert party.

We checked in and found that we had the front, center table. Not that it mattered since people stand at the railing, but go me and my early booking skills. I wasn't very hungry (of course), but I wanted to try the desserts. Actually, I wanted a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. There was coffee aplenty, but no mugs! I grabbed a pink lemonade and made a small dessert plate (Eddie's was similar and Jonah, after all of his dreaming of chocolate covered strawberries, only wanted some lemonade.)

Mango shooter, pineapple chunk, anemic watermelon slice, peanut butter tart, chocolate covered strawberry. Everything but the unripe watermelon was great. I really enjoyed the peanut butter tart.
photo12_zps23a0bccb.jpg

The castle show started, and I tried to get pics, but I'm just so short and there were already people lining the railing. Plus, my broken foot was finally starting to hurt (not bad on day 5), and Jonah was falling asleep in Eddie's arms. Eddie and I sat at the table and watched the bottom half of the fireworks for a while. I assumed I would love Holiday Wishes because I love Christmas music. But I forgot that the day after Christmas I'm kind of over Christmas in general. I had loved Wishes the year before because of the iconic DISNEY music. I teared up over When You Wish Upon a Star, etc. And here's where I'll lose many of you...neither Eddie nor I care very much about fireworks and we were so cold and tired that we just wanted to leave. If I hadn't pre-paid $75 for the Dessert Party, we would have skipped it.

That said, to give my opinion of the Dessert Party's eternal question: Is it worth it? Yes. It was only $75 for two adults and a child for all you can eat dessert and drinks, and we had GREAT seating away from the massive holiday crowds for one of the biggest events. That's almost bargain prices by Disney standards. If we hadn't been cold and sleepy *and* Jonah hadn't been getting over a sore throat, I think we would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Our great view from our seats:
photo5_zpsd3c14286.jpg

We decided to head out a little early, and CMs directed us from around Buzz Lightyear through a back exit that came out near The Chapeau and the end of Main Street, so we completely missed the crowds. We grabbed the Express Monorail and took a tram to our car...easy peasy on a busy holiday night.

Overall Christmas week thoughts for our family? The holiday crowds are completely manageable if you have access to EMH and/or do rope drop and have FP+. I have no idea how that would translate for a family staying off property with Disney's current FP+ structure. We only felt the crowds were oppressive twice, and those were both at the Magic Kingdom.

We discovered that we LOVE to do rope drop but we're not fond of late evenings. We might do the Wishes Dessert Party again, but it would be on half day when we've had a lot of rest. We're much better being out of the parks before 8:00 p.m.

We did too much in our 5 days. I don't know what I would have cut out, but we were tired, haha. I think Jonah being ill probably added to that. But we had a fantastic time and found it a great place to spend Christmas! We loved the princesses, we all love Splash Mountain and we really enjoyed Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, the two parks we didn't get to visit as much or at all during our first trip.

Already planning our third trip when Jonah's a little older...maybe 2016! Hope you enjoyed our Christmas trip report and it wasn't too detailed or redundant.

Up next: Our Day at Universal's Islands of Adventure -- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Seuss Landing!

December 27 - Universal's Islands of Adventure

I had really wanted to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (I'm a *huge* HP geek), so I had initially added a Universal package with 2-day park tickets and 3 nights at a Universal partner hotel (a Best Western) that allowed us City Walk passes and early entry to the wizarding world (for far less a night than Universal's own resorts). The more we looked at Universal parks, though, the more we realized there was very little that Jonah was either tall enough to ride or particularly interested in. We knew we'd be tired after 5 days of Disney, so we decided to just keep the IoA reservation to do Wizarding World and Seuss Landing. We modified our package and that changed our hotel to another Universal partner, Comfort Inn and Suites.

Changing from a Disney moderate to a mid-range hotel was jarring, LOL. Building 4 at the French Quarter had been SO quiet. We never saw any of the guests in the surrounding rooms (granted, we left early every day) and the few times we visited the food court had been off-hours so there were few people there. There were A LOT of people staying on I-Drive two days after Christmas! But our room was fine as a sleeping place, since that's all we needed it be, and we were up bright and early to take advantage of early entry.

We arrived at the main gate, walked through City Walk (ack...too commercialized for me. I realize that Mainstreet USA is all about Disney making a buck, but at least they dress it up in early 20th century charm and play on my emotions, haha!). We printed our tickets at the will call kiosk and got in line right at 6:40 or so. They opened the gates a little early and it was DARK. Dark like looking at paper tickets is hard dark and wow did I miss scanning a band (sorry, I'm a fan).

We walked quickly in the direction of Hogsmeade, only to be stopped by TWO (count 'em, two) customer service reps who alone were checking EVERYONE in the massive after Christmas early morning horde to see if they had hotel tickets to qualify for early entry. Eddie and I showed one of them our Comfort Inn and Suites key and he said, "Not a Universal hotel" and turned to other guests. I said quickly, "No, it's a partner hotel." He acted as if he had no idea what I was talking about and could not give me any idea what, exactly, he needed to see to verify that we had an early entry package, so I finally just showed him the print out of our reservation from Universal and he peered at it in the pitch black 6:50 a.m. winter morning and agreed that it was okay. Wow. That's a system that needs some streamlining.

We quickly joined the throng and I could not remember where the shortcut to Hogsmeade was from Seuss Landing (I'd read about it online) so we just followed the crowds.

Dark and early on the streets of Hogsmeade. Seriously, it was dark enough at 7:00 a.m. that a Dark Mark in the sky would have glowed like a beacon.

One of Hedwig's early rising cousins, no doubt. (I'm talking about the owl for non-Potterheads).

We hurried past Honeydukes and Ollivanders (which had a tiny line for the wand show!) and made our way to Hogwarts for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Jonah was too small to ride this ride, so we planned to ride child swap, see how that went and then ride again as single riders if we wanted. The guest service guys directed us into the main line to do child swap, and we flew through the empty exterior queue, barely taking in the theming, until we were inside the castle.

The founding of Hogwarts and a shockingly old First Year, haha!
1514557_10202752871132488_2063005024_n.jpg

And then we stopped. And wound slowly, slowly through the castle queue, skipping the locker room to drop our bag because we were doing child swap. At that point we could have entered the single rider line and SHOULD HAVE. We queued and queued, finally arriving at the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom where projections of Harry, Ron and Hermione told us more about the ride.

And we queued some more. Poor Jonah. I had downloaded Palace Pets (a Disney princess game) on my iPhone and he played it intently. After 40 minutes (beginning at 7:00 a.m.), we arrived at the head of standby line where it meets the single rider line and were directed to the Child Swap room. We should have run through the EMPTY single rider line and then done child swap. Or one of us ridden Flight of the Hippogriff with Jonah while the other rode single rider. Eddie rode first and Jonah and I sat in a fairly un-themed room while Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets played. Eddie came back, said, "OMG!" and took over and then I boarded the ride. OMG. You sit in a bucket type seat with a shoulder restraint and you cannot see the other people in your (4 or 5 man, can't remember) car. The bucket seat tips back, the motion simulator screen begins, and you are flying with Harry Potter through scenes from the books. It is AMAZING. It was worth the 40 minutes we still shouldn't have waited. Then we were off to explore Hogsmeade!

Since Jonah had been so patient, Eddie took him to ride Flight of the Hippogriff while I shopped for gifts and souvenirs at Filch's Emporium (which was not at all crowded. I bought myself socks representing all 4 houses of Hogwarts!)

The boys on Flight of the Hippogriff. Jonah liked this so much, they rode it twice in a row!

We stopped at a wand cart next to Hippogriff where you could buy replicas of the wands of Harry, Hermione, etc. Jonah wasn't interested in a wand (he's seen the first two films but I don't think he'll care until he's old enough for the books) and Eddie and I didn't feel like shelling out $35 each for a wand (and we'd have to get two!) so we just looked. Voldemort's wand made Eddie feel sassy, haha!

1544978_10202752874132563_798018282_n.jpg

The butterbeer cart didn't have a line, so I sent Eddie to grab a cup for us. It was so early and SO chilly that my plans to get a cup of frozen and a cup of non-frozen didn't come to fruition. Eddie loves butterscotch, so I knew this would be a hit. It tastes like a cream soda and a butterscotch candy had a baby. I don't really like cream soda or butterscotch, but I liked this! Maybe it was just my Potter love, but Eddie and I eagerly shared this.

Hogsmeade...where it's ALWAYS winter time!
1524911_10202752875772604_2074825552_n.jpg

Honeydukes caught Jonah's eye and we popped in. They had the Every Flavor Beans, of course, but you can buy those anywhere these days. I felt it was a little small. I only had two critiques about Wizarding World (which *is* fabulously themed) -- one, it needs to be bigger (and I realize there are plans for expansion) and two, the cast members should be in character. I know JKR didn't want her characters represented at the park, and to be honest, I don't want a non-Radcliffe Harry either, but random shop keepers with fair to middling English accents and knowledge about the books would be great, much like the Disney CMs. The conductor at the Hogwarts Express was doing his best, but without being peopled by denizens of Hogsmeade, the shops felt a little hollow to me. That said, I still loved it.

Zonko's...I wish we'd spent more time here. I can't wait to see if they build a Weasley's Wizard Wheezes!

Our haul from Honeydukes: I got a $10 chocolate frog and Jonah grabbed an all-day sucker. I'd read other trip reports that the chocolate from Honeydukes was disappointing. I assumed it was written by people who expected Dairy Milk or Cadbury (which would be AWESOME...Universal, look into that!) but this wasn't even Hershey's quality. A large, chalky chocolate frog that was so hard I could barely gnaw it. :( At least Jonah enjoyed his sucker.

We did stop and get a pumpkin juice (loved it cold, the warmer it got the more the taste of the spices intensified and it got too cinnamony for me) and a couple of croissants from a cart. Delish! Next time I hope to get breakfast reservations at The Three Broomsticks.

We wandered a bit more through Hogsmeade (at almost 9:00 a.m. the crowds were truly intense!) and then we waved goodbye to the Hogwarts Express and headed out for the Jonah part of the day: Seuss Landing!

Jonah is trying to do wandless magic and Expelliarmus my camera, haha! I can't wait until Wizarding World is a much larger part of IoA and you can ride the Hogwarts Express to it! *someday*

Thank you so much! We're looking at going in October 2016 (maybe we'll hit all of the Disney holidays eventually!). I hope you all have a wonderful time and enjoy some sunny Florida weather during your US trip! Hope to read a report from you!

Just read through your entire trip and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt like I was enjoying the parks with you guys. I'm taking my 10 year old daughter for her first trip the week of May 5-10th. It's my 3rd time but I haven't gone in 15 years. :)

Thanks so much! Since we went at such a busy time with so many holiday events, I wanted to try to give people a good view of what it was like to move around the parks and use FP, FP+ and the Magic Bands. I hope you guys have a great time! May is a lovely time to go, especially to Epcot!

December 27, continued

We backtracked to Seuss Landing and tried to take it all in. It is massive sensory overload in all the best ways possible. Jonah has been raised on Seuss books (the first book he ever read on his own was "Hop on Pop") and he was super excited.

There were no crowds or lines, so we jumped on to the Seuss Trolley Train Ride. This ride is themed with the "The Sneetches," my favorite Dr. Seuss book. This ride is a great way to see everything at Seuss Landing (including inside Circus McGurkus Cafe) as well as glimpses of Poseidon's Fury, The Incredible Hulk and Hogwarts.

Jonah was hungry and Seuss Landing has limited breakfast options, so I was totally cool with his pretzel and Icee selection.

Truffala trees at the Caro-Seuss-El. This was a fun carousel. Carousels were another thing I didn't take into consideration with my boot, haha. Those stirrups are tricksy!

Jonah was excited about the One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish ride. I mentioned to Eddie that it shot water, but someone how none of us realized how MUCH water. We got drenched, LOL.

Jonah after the ride...delighted with his wet head. It was chilly that morning...Mom of the year!

We took another ride on the trolley and it stalled when it was up, up, up! Eddie and Jonah were riding together, but I was riding with a single dad who had brought his two school-aged daughters. We passed the time with me explaining early entry and how to maximize his Forbidden Journey experience, haha. The ride was stopped for about 10 minutes, so afterward we were given an Express Pass for any ride. Swanky!

Goodbye Seuss Landing! Remember, don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened! ~ Theodor Seuss Geisel.

We walked over to Marvel Super Hero Island to see it and use our Express Pass before we left.

Super fan

We used our Express on Storm Force Acceleration, which was kind of like the Teacups on Speed, we really should have used it for this. I don't know if we were exhausted and just not feeling it or if Universal was more crowded after Christmas than Disney had been before Christmas, but we weren't horribly impressed with the Marvel area. Sad, because Eddie and I are both Marvel fans. Of course, our options were limited by what Jonah could ride.

We stopped at Port Authority on our way out and bought a couple of HP themed souvenirs. And then we went back to the Comfort Inn and Suites and slept for DAYS. Or at least hours, before having dinner at Fuddrucker's (there isn't one in Oklahoma City, despite our close proximity to Texas).

The next morning we were up and heading to Downtown Disney for a few last minute items.

1497598_10202752883332793_34512847_n.jpg

We were there early, so very little other than Goofy's Candy Co was open, but World of Disney was open to early morning Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo appointments. There were two CMs standing in front of WoD and I asked them if I could buy postage stamps (the Disney website had listed WoD as a stamp vendor). One of the CMs said no, stamps were purchased at Guest Services. That seemed odd to me, but off I went to Guest Services.

There was a line of about 4 people with complicated MDE issues ahead of me, and then it was my turn. When I reached the counter, I asked to purchase stamps and the CM said they didn't sell them, I'd have to purchase them at World of Disney. I had waited about 15 minutes so, yes, I was a little annoyed. I headed back to World of Disney, and while I worked customer service back in the day and am therefore NEVER unpleasant or express anger to a customer service worker, I did express annoyance at wasting 15 minutes of my day standing in a line with unhappy people. I was merely telling her so that she knew where the stamps lived, but she seemed cowed. I felt awful. Moot point: the registers still weren't open to sell stamps.

We ended up heading to a mail service across the street where it took far longer than it should have to purchase Harry Potter stamps, print my holiday newsletter from my flash drive and mail my Christmas cards that were otherwise ready to go. But hey, my Christmas letter had real time pics of our actual Disney Christmas, so yay (yes, my husband thought that was an insane plan, too).

As we left Disney World, we were wished farewell by the world's friendliest squirrel. I think he was trying to tell me about far off places and a prince in disguise, but I'm pretty sure he was speaking French. Goodbye Orlando and all Disney critters!

We made a side trip to Fort Walton Beach, FL on our way home. Eddie grew up there but moved to Oklahoma when he was 11 and it was his first time back. It was a great footnote to our trip.

In the backseat with Goofy and Jedi Mickey, watching "Brave" on the way back to Oklahoma. Thanks for reading my trip report, see you next in 2016!

Awesome trip report. I totally agree with your assessment of Wizarding World. We've visited twice. The first time was about 3 months after it opened and I thought things just felt small because it was so crowded. We visited again in 2012 and it was less crowded, but still felt very small. I am a huge Harry Potter geek so I loved it nonetheless!
The chocolate frogs were a huge disappointment, but I loved the butter beer! I liked the frozen version best. It was perfect on a hot summer day.
Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us. Christmas at Disney is definitely on my must do list.

Thanks! I'm so glad you're enjoying the report! I have heard that the Plaza has great ice cream and ice cream treats, we will have to put it on our schedule for our 2016 trip.
The Plaza has delicious food and a nice selection of healthy kid/adult menu choices! And if you are POP, the pricing was even better. :)

I was disappointed about not getting a frozen butterbeer! But that's the hazards of FL in Dec, our first day was 86, our last was in the mid 50s! I totally recommend Disney Christmas! If you go the week before we did, the crowds are better, too!

Just starting your report but I'm loving it. You arrived at Disney the day after we left so it's fun following along knowing I was just there. Plus I can't get Bare Necessities out of my head!! :D

OMG @Minnie Sue not only did we go at the same time but we also went to IOA. It was our first time but we couldn't miss it. We too are also big Potter fans!! I'm actually watching all the movies again and comparing what we saw at universal. I was really impressed with the detail at WWOHP. I just got finished writing our report when I found yours!

Oh, how cool! What did you think of the week before Christmas? Our friends went then for their Disneymoon (stayed at Kidani) and loved it! I sang "Bare Necessities" for days, LOL!

I loved all the music and decorations. I thought the crowds were great! We never really waited long for anything. My husband thought the crowds were a little high but he was comparing them to our last that we took Sept. 2010. I don't think he could've handled it the week of Christmas. :)
