Trip Report *COMPLETE* How to Break a Disney Curse in Three Easy Steps: 1) Two Chipmunks 2) The Dapper Dans 3) The Best Mom Ever

Well, it finally happened.

I went to Walt Disney World, the place where, for the last three years and last three trips, I:
  • Found out my company was closing, and thus I wouldn’t have a job in a month;
  • Tore my ACL in Hollywood Studios, ended up at the ER, and had to be on crutches and use a scooter for the first time, all while racking up a massive hospital bill I’m still paying off;
  • Got tonsillitis, my dad got the flu, and my mom got a bad cold, so we had to leave four days early on what was supposed to be our “do-over” trip.
(If you want the details about any of these trips, check out my pre-trip report here, where I wrote mini trip reports about these nightmares.)

Would this trip be different? Would my mom and I have fun on our first mother-daughter only trip? Would turning 30 slowly drive me insane? Most importantly, would I finally break my Disney curse??

Stay tuned to find out! *Dun dun dun*

Dun…

Dun…

Ha, just kidding. I really considered leaving you all in suspense about how my trip went, but I’m going to be upfront instead: this trip was probably one of my favorites that I’ve ever taken! Definitely top 3, if not tied for first place! My mom and I had an absolutely incredible time, and I can’t wait to go back with her! And I think she had a lot of fun, too, since this was supposed to be a “once-in-a-lifetime” thing, but since we’ve been home, she’s even said we need to do another trip, just the two of us, again! (Sorry, Dad!)

Here’s a quick refresher for everyone who didn’t read my pre-trip report:

WHO: My mom (Ele) and me (Carrie)

WHEN: April 7-April 13

WHERE: Beach Club Villas

WHY: My 30th Birthday!

407276601.jpeg

My dad and I are the obsessive Disney lovers in our family. My mom adores the movies, but while she also loves the parks, they’re not the be-all, end-all for her like they are for me and my dad. So I was surprised when she not only didn’t immediately say no when I jokingly asked to go to Disney for my 30th birthday, but instead started asking questions about what the crowds were like and where I’d want to stay. Fast forward through months of waiting and anticipation (and that final trip where we all got sick, which was just this past Dec-Jan), and the day had finally arrived—we were leaving on our first mother-daughter Disney trip!!

Carrie, the first picture of you holding the lantern is simply beautiful. Your face expresses both hope and contentment. Frame it! ❤

(And the ones with you and your mom are cute!)

What an amazing birthday!

@Tuvalu beat me to it - it is a fantastic frame-worthy photo. (And I too like the ones with your mom - that must be the mother in me that looks at photos for the memories they will bring back in the future)

Thank you so much! What a lovely thing to say 💛 It made me reconsider the picture, so thank you!

It really was the most amazing birthday ever! I'm so grateful to my mom (and dad!) for making it happen!

Thank you so much! How lovely of you! 💛 Some of them weren't so great :hilarious:, but I'm looking at these three differently now, so thank you!

APRIL 11, THURSDAY: CAPE MAY CAFÉ AND STORMALONG BAY AND EPCOT (OH MY)

For the first time in forever (or at least in a few days), we slept in. Our ADR wasn’t until 10:20, and it was, shall we say, close to home. So we literally slept until like 9:50 :hilarious: and then we were running around like crazy people getting ready!

But all we had to do was pop across the BC courtyard to check in for our ADR at…Cape May Café! This was a really laid back, fun experience. Our waitress was great (she was everything the CP one hadn’t been the day before), and the characters were great with making the adults act like kids again! Plus, the food was pretty delicious too! I was a bit bummed, because when we’d eaten here for breakfast in 2014, there’d been a live crepe-making station, but that is now a thing of the past. They had chocolate chip pancakes, though, so I was happy :inlove:.

Daisy came almost immediately! (That’s what I like to happen!)

20190411_100516.jpg

20190411_100526.jpg

Then we got food.

20190411_100737.jpg

(My first plate. I forgot to get a pic of mom’s. For some reason, buffets are my food-picture kryptonite :banghead:)

Then Goofy came by!

20190411_101206.jpg

Minnie was hot on his heels!

20190411_102552.jpg

Then my main guy, Don Duck!

(A lady at the next table offered to take our picture, and this one I was very happy to get! It’s my boy, Donald!)

After Donald left, I got my next plate of food (and I started eating before I remembered to take a picture :hilarious:.

20190411_104449.jpg

Then I got another birthday muffin and a card!

You can’t see them, but Goofy and Minnie were in the background of this picture clapping along while the waitress and my mom (and several surrounding tables) sang Happy Birthday!

All in all, a yummy meal with great character interaction and service! If you’re in the Crescent Lake area, I highly recommend it!

Then it was finally time for the whole reason we’d wanted to stay at Beach Club in the first place…it was Stormalong Bay time!! We’d planned to go earlier in the trip, but that was on the day that our room lock had broken, so we’d decided just to head back into Epcot.

We got changed into our bathing suits and made our way down. Man, I’d heard the rumors, but it is super hard to find a good place to sit that isn’t in the direct sunlight (we both burn, so we needed shade). But we got very lucky (birthday luck for the win, again!) as a table of older women was just packing up to go near the entrance we’d come in (by the arcade and Beaches n Cream), and I went over and asked if they’d mind if I put my bag down as they finished up. They were very nice and said it was no problem. Score!

I had originally planned to run around taking pictures as usual, but it was so nice to just kick back and relax, so I ended up taking photos just from my seat :hilarious:.

20190411_140110.jpg

We pretty much immediately decided to hit the lazy river, which was a lot of fun…until it wasn’t. Somehow, like an idiot, I’d taken a kid’s tube instead of an adult’s. It went down around me just fine, but when we decided to get out after going around a few times, I could not get it off. My mom tried to help, and couldn’t. One of the lifeguards came over to help, and I am dying inside. But she assured me that it happened all the time, and that visually they don’t look that different. She also showed me where the lettering identifying it as a kid’s tube had rubbed off. So I felt marginally better but still vaguely mortified.

I figured it was time to check out the sandy bottom section, and we ended up not really liking it. It was full of mostly kids, and we both had some difficulty walking in it (I don’t have ACLs in either knee, and my mom has bad knees from when she was younger). We decided we weren’t fond of the sandy bottom. We also didn’t like that so much of it doesn’t connect like it looks like it does. We had to keep getting out and walking on the super hot ground to get to another section. It’s possible it’s just because we were Stormalong noobs, but we actually, uhh, didn’t like it that much? An unpopular opinion, I know.

We eventually fled back to our table, but not before we stopped at Hurricane Hannah’s to get two frosés. :inlove:

20190411_140157.jpg

(It was HOT, so this baby separated FAST.)

Of course, after we were back at our table, a waitress came around. For some reason, I’m not really sure why…we ordered food? It had only been a couple hours since breakfast, but we thought splitting a sandwich seemed like a great idea. It wasn’t. I also got another frosé, cause that first one had gone done real smooth ;).

20190411_144010.jpg

We got some sort of fried chicken sandwich on a pretzel roll (I mostly just wanted the fries and pretzel roll, lol). We only ate about half of it (but all of the fries).

We hung out for a little longer (but didn't go back in the water...we were dry and didn't feel like getting wet again) in the shade and watched the poolside games. But eventually we decided to pack up and head in to get ready to go into a park. Epcot awaited us (again!).

Man oh man, I'm trying so hard to get this done before my dad and I leave next Friday!! (pre-trip report here)

I forgot to post what might be my fave solo photo of the trip (my fave photo of both of us is either the one with C&D or the one with M&M), which we took on our way out of MK on my birthday:

Back to our regularly scheduled programming!

After freshening up, we strolled into Epcot. The first order of the day was to head to the big pin stand in Future World to pick up a few pins that just released that day. Then it was time for our Spaceship Earth FP. My mom decided to sit it out (we'd already been on it twice, after all!), so I rode the grand and miraculous spaceship all by myself. This is one ride that never gets old for me. I really, really hope they don't change too much with the refurb, but I know they probably will. :(

20190411_165700.jpg

(Love this mural...)

After my ride was done, I found my mom loitering by the Art of Disney store. I questioned her at the time as to what she was doing, and she acted all innocent. After we got home, an awesome F&G hand drawn print of Figment showed up in the mail a few days later (I'll post a picture of it later...if I can find it :banghead:). I love my mom, haha.

As we passed Mouse Gear, we noticed that they were giving out Daisy AP magnets (we'd gotten Pluto earlier in the week), so we hopped in line to get them. How lucky that we happened to be there the week the transition from one to the other happened!

We stopped for some PP pics next (including the picture from the intro to this TR).

Since Club Cool had been so crowded during our previous attempt earlier in the week, we stopped in because I had to get a very special birthday treat!

20190411_172316.jpg

A slushy!! (I got a mix of cherry and blue raspberry on the recommendation of the CM.) This is definitely one of the nicest free birthday treats offered in the parks! It was yummy and refreshing!

To eat with it, we went to Taste Track, where I wanted to get the Violet Blueberry Vanilla Croissant Doughnut. I also saw some very interesting cookies from the window, with special Daisy AP decals, so I got one of them, too! Both ended up being super yummy!

cookie.jpg

While we were sitting eating our snacks and drinking the slush, I decided to walk over to Test Track, just to see what the single rider line was like. The park didn't feel crowded at all, so I figured why not? Well, the SRL was only a posted 5 min wait! At that point, you're contractually obligated to ride, right? So I hopped in line. It ended up being closer to 15, but still not too bad! I got a random ride photo in our account, but otherwise a success!

After Test Track, we decided to keep snacking at F&G booths, so we made our way toward World Showcase. I grabbed some pics of these guys on the way:

We decided to stop into the Odyssey, as it was theoretically the festival center, to do some shopping. We also decided to get something from Arbor while we were there, to sit down for a bit and continue to enjoy the AC. We got the Mixed Berry Buttermilk Cake, served with Apple Cider Sorbet, and the Cider Flight, which had Original Sin Brewery Black Widow Hard Cider, Florida Beer Company Caribé Strawberry Rose Hard Cider, and 3 Daughters Brewing Key Lime Apple Hard Cider. We DID NOT like the Key Lime, but we liked the other two, especially the strawberry rose!

20190411_184506.jpg

20190411_184517.jpg

The cake was really, really good, and it was actually pretty huge!

And here, friends, is where my notes stop. :hilarious: So from here on out, I will be relying solely on pictures taken and my admittedly spotty memory. So the rest of this report is probably gonna be a lot faster and less thorough, lol.

From this point, we walked into World Showcase. We walked straight to Germany, since we'd already "done" Mexico, Norway, and China. Grabbed a pic of this guy on the way:

20190411_191055.jpg

In Germany, we saw that Snow White was meeting, and her line was pretty short, so we hopped into it. I'm not a huge fan of Snow White (she's probably my least favorite princess), especially since most of her "friends," in my experience, aren't super engaging. But this M&G changed my mind! This "friend" was lovely and funny and she really was Snow White, if you know what I mean. She promised to bake me a birthday cake for my next birthday with her animals friends, which I gladly accepted!

(I'm into the single digits until my next trip! Ahhhhhhh!)

Took on the way to Germany:

20190411_192752.jpg

In Germany, we spotted a telltale Easter egg for our scavenger hunt! He was hidden on a balcony.

20190411_194109.jpg

We looked through the shops and were in awe of the clocks.

We were walking through the countries (and going into some stores along the way) on our way to our dinner ADR.

20190411_201632.jpg

We spotted a Spike for our other scavenger hunt!

20190411_202115.jpg

We walked straight through Japan and Morocco because we knew we wanted to spend more time in them the next day (spoiler alert...Friday is another Epcot day).

20190411_203021.jpg

20190411_203059.jpg

We decided to check in early for our dinner ADR. We had booked literally the last spot at Le Cellier, 8:55. We did this because my dad is diabetic, so he can't eat too late. My mom and I like eating late. But apparently not 8:55 late. :banghead: We checked in around 8:30, and we sat there until about 8:56 as people who checked in after us were seated. Now I get it...we checked in early. But it still felt strange that we sat there while others were checking in after and immediately getting seated. One couple actually said to the CM seating them, "But hey, they were here first." And the CM was like, "Yeah, but their reservation is after yours." Oh well.

This meal was OK. Our waitress was good, but we've had some truly outstanding service here over the years, so "good" didn't feel up to par. We weren't too hungry, so we decided to order some unconventional things. This is where our server started to kind of ignore us. I guess she figured we weren't ordering big ticket items, so her tip would be less. Of course, we always tip more if we get exceptional service even if we don't order a lot, so joke was on her. Anyway, the food was still yummy (and the bill was still steep...this is Le Cellier, after all).

We both started with a glass of Moosehead, one of our favorite Canadian beers. We of course got bread to share (we had to ask though, since we didn't get entrees).

20190411_211411.jpg

(That pretzel bread....mmmmmmm......)

We ordered the signature poutine as our appetizer. I was a little disappointed because I had read that if you were APs, you got a special menu. I told the CM at check in we were APs, but we didn't get special menus. Oh well.

20190411_212139.jpg

And we both got a bowl of the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup (this and our fave dessert are what keep us coming back here).

For our "entrees" my mom got the Four-Cheese Macaroni and Cheese "enhancement" and I got the Lobster Mac and Cheese enhancement.

These may look the same, but I promise, they are different.

maccheese.jpg

lobster.jpg

For dessert, we decided to split our tied-for-favorite (with the Cream Cheese Wontons at Yak & Yeti) dessert, the Maple Crème Brûlée. Usually we each get our own because we love it so much, but we were pretty stuffed, so we shared.

Apparently, Le Cellier doesn't give birthday desserts, either. I don't care, but it did stick out as the only meal to not give me some sort of separate extra dessert. They just added a thin white chocolate (which neither my mom or I like) "Happy Birthday" piece.

20190411_220824.jpg

It was weird, because this usually busy restaurant emptied out and we were the second to last table at the end of our meal.

20190411_222007.jpg

After we finished, we meandered slowly out toward the International Gateway. The park had completely cleared out (it was after 10 at this point). I went a bit picture crazy.

APRIL 12, FRIDAY: EPCOT

We slept in later than I'd like to admit this morning. It seemed we'd used all our "early" energy for the first three days and were fading fast. Let's just say we slept late enough that by the time we leisurely got ready and roamed outside, it was already time for our Beaches n Cream lunch ADR. :angelic:

We were starving by that point! We got the Cheese and Bacon Fries side as an appetizer (we DEFINITELY should have said no red onions).

20190412_133930.jpg

I got (of course) the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque (SO. GOOD.).

20190412_135045.jpg

Mom got the Cheddar-Bacon-Ranch-Chicken Sandwich and upgraded to onion rings. She enjoyed it, though the piece of chicken was a bit small.

20190412_135051.jpg

And then, of course, it was time for the main reason we were there, my absolute favorite ice cream treat in all of WDW...

THE NO WAY JOSE. :inlove:

20190412_142349.jpg

With my prize:

20190412_142401.jpg

I've never been able to finish this on my own, but this time...I came so close and still didn't. Oh well. No birthday dessert here, either, actually. But it could have just been because I ordered a massive sundae to consume on my own. They did turn on the flashing lights and announce it was my birthday when the NWJ was brought out.

After another yummy meal here, we ventured into Epcot. (Looking back, we did go to Epcot 4 days of an almost 7 day trip. Oh well. It was convenient!)

We wandered around the UK and Canadian stores a bit, and we saw Oh! Canada (which I'm happy about now, since it appears the film is changing. I know the version with Martin Short is cheesy, but I actually really love it...).

We made our way into France, and apparently we hadn't eaten enough?

france food.jpg

We got the La Vie en Rose Frozen Slushy (Grey Goose Vodka Orange, St. Germain Liqueur, White and Red Cranberry Juice) and the Chocolate Macaron Lollipop from the Fleur de Lys booth. Both were super yummy!

I also got a (mostly) better picture of the Beauty and the Beast topiary, which was actually really hard because tons of people were posing in front of it (and draping themselves all across the wall under it, etc.).

20190412_175116.jpg

We continued our backtrack around WS and toward Morocco. On the way, my mom got a phone call, so we pulled over. I took advantage of the break by grabbing the Watermelon Cucumber Slushy from the Florida Fresh booth.

20190412_181112.jpg

It was very refreshing! Though the watermelon on top tasted kind of strange...

We wandered around the Morocco pavilion, and instead of taking pictures, I just soaked it all in. It really is so crazy how otherworldly it feels back there, when only steps away is a major theme park.

20190412_183632.jpg

After spending more money than we should have (I got an awesome pair of handmade flats!), we walked over to Japan. There was one final F&G item that I NEEDED to try.

frushi.jpg

I zoomed in on this image so you could see what the lovely Japanese CM tried to write on my frushi. When they all saw it was my birthday, they got super excited, and the one wrote "HBD" (Happy Birthday) with the strawberry syrup. Unfortunately, the B separated kinda funny before I could get a picture.

I enjoyed the frushi, but I do think it's a bit over-hyped. There were desserts I enjoyed at the festival more, for sure (like the griddled pound cake from Northern Bloom or the buttermilk cake from Arbor snacks).

I LOVE your TR! I also love your photos! What lens did you shoot with? EPCOT is also my favorite park and I will admit that I would go every day while at WDW! I even left my husband at the resort (we were at BWV) while I went to EPCOT a few times! And, F&G is so beautiful, there is so much to soak in!
I am excited that you're going back soon! Can't wait to hear about the rest of this trip as well as your next. And Happy Birthday ;)

I am excited that you're going back soon! Can't wait to hear about the rest of this trip as well as your next. And Happy Birthday ;)
Thanks! And oh wow, thanks for the compliment on the photos. Here I thought most of them were sub par. I actually only used my Galaxy 9 Plus for every photo that wasn't PP.

I always oscillate over which park is my fave, but I really do love EPCOT. Like you said, there's so much to do and soak in! I am so excited and lucky to be going back so soon (4 days!!??)! Thank you for reading!

APRIL 12, FRIDAY: EPCOT (continued)

After my frushi, we headed into Mitsukoshi. This is definitely one of my favorite stores in all of WDW. I've always enjoyed anime, and I had a big kawaii phase several years ago :hilarious:. So this store brings a lot of memories and random excitement. We roamed around for a while, trying to rein ourselves in (though I did pick up a cute little Gudetama plush [he's my spirit animal]). My mom had been saying all trip that we would NOT be picking pearls this time, because we've already done it several times and gotten a lot of awesome ones over the years (one year, I bought two oysters because I wanted to get earrings, and wouldn't you know it, my first oyster had twin pearls of perfect earring size, so I got a necklace too! ;) That same year, my mom got two oysters and she ended up with a beautiful golden colored pearl and a black pearl!!). But then after we paid and sent our purchases to the International Gateway, it started pouring again. We had already been in the store for a while, had bought everything we wanted, but wanted to stay out of the rain...what to do? We telepathically communicated and ended up each buying an oyster! :angelic:

This was definitely one of the more fun times we've done it, even though the pearls we got were average in color and size. But the CMs helping that day were all super fantastic! The lady who helped us choose our necklaces was just so sweet and enthusiastic, and she genuinely was SOOO happy that we were on a mother/daughter trip! After we got our necklaces, she insisted on taking our picture to commemorate the occasion:

It was still raining pretty hard, so we dashed into the Kawaii Life exhibit. I'd been wanting to check this exhibit out, but we kept missing it. So I was super excited to get my kawaii nerd on!

(Took this one for my dad, who loved Astro Boy growing up--and still does!)

(I love how they can and will cute-ify anything in Japan!)

(Rilakkuma is another fave of mine...)

After spending a lot of time in the exhibit, we emerged and...it had stopped raining! Yay! It was getting closer to our dinner ADR, and we'd done everything we'd wanted to in Epcot, so we decided to just sit up behind the koi pond and relax for a while.

We spotted an egg on the way!

It was so lovely to just sit and bask in the beauty of Epcot, and in the beauty of the Japanese pavilion in particular. Sitting up there, it felt a bit otherworldly. At least, until a large group of loud teenage boys came up and sat, breaking the peace. :hilarious: Oh well. We decided to slowly make our way to our ADR, one we'd been looking forward to, and which may have been a least minute reschedule...

APRIL 12, FRIDAY: EPCOT (continued)

We made our way over to Italy for our recently secured ADR at...Via Napoli!

We'd both been pretty bummed about missing it due to the downpour days before, so we decided to book another ADR when we saw one was available. Originally we'd planned to just eat around the world that night, so it worked out.

Our reservation was at 8:30, so we were seated in an already empty restaurant. The couple next to us was clearly on their first date, and not gonna lie, we couldn't resist listening a little bit and cooing at their cuteness once they left.

My mom got Sangria and I got a Peach Bellini. I love a good Peach Bellini (the frozen ones from Maggiano's are divine!), but this one was only OK. A little tart for my taste.

We started with an order of the garlic focaccia bread. It was yummy.

(We'd already dug in before I remembered a picture. Whoops!)

My mom ordered the personal size pepperoni pie.

I got my absolute fave, and the reason we decided to reschedule our ADR, the Quattro Formaggi!

(SO. GOOD.)

Unlike Le Cellier the night before, our server was absolutely fantastic. Which is funny, because I feel like usually the service at Le Cellier is stellar and Via Napoli's is usually only OK. But our waiter was lovely, engaging, and johnny-on-the-spot when we needed anything. And even though we ended up being one of the last tables in the restaurant, we never felt rushed (though they did start to "close" the restaurant around us, it wasn't in a hinting way; it was just matter-of-fact). We ordered a cannoli for dessert (which I didn't get a pic of for some reason) and the next thing we knew, our server was approaching the table with all the others he could rally with a special birthday treat! And they sang "Happy Birthday" in Italian, which was cool.

It was a Madeleine-type cookie. Very yummy!

We left soon after and I continued my new tradition of taking pictures of a nearly empty Epcot at night on our way to the International Gateway! It wasn't as deserted as the night before, but it was also earlier.
