Trip Report (Complete) A Jersey Girl in a Disney World (2016 Edition) June 23-28th

Another year, another trip report! This year we stayed at the Polynesian Village Resort, June 23rd-28th.

Day 1

We were up super early for our Spirit flight out of Atlantic City. Like last year, we had no problems with Spirit out of A.C. On time, very organized. The wait at security was much longer than last year though (approx. 20 min)

Got to Orlando 10 min. early, almost no wait for bags, no wait for the rental car (Alamo). Did a grocery run at Goodings, McDonald's for lunch, and headed to the Poly for check-in.

We haven't stayed at the Poly in about 20 years. We ususally stay at the Caribbean, and thought we'd try something different this time.
We arrived around 11:30am and the room wasn't ready. We were told we'd get a text when it was, and the cast member who checked us in said the room would be ready sometime between then and 3:00pm. Although we were a little disappointed because our room was always ready
at the Caribbean when we arrived early.

So we headed to the Studios to kill a few hours. No wait for a bus, one pulled up as soon as we got to the stop. (Tip: Poly buses stop at the Grand Floridian after the Polynesian during most of the day before heading to your theme park. Allow for 10 min. avg. extra travel time. The only times we didn't stop at the Grand were first thing in the morning.)

Lines were long at midday, and we didn't have any fastpasses (we made them for Epcot later in the evening) so we just walked around. HOT. Heat index was 105.

Headed back to the Poly around 2:15pm as we hadn't gotten a text yet and were told the room would be ready before 3. Checked at the front desk close to 3 and the room still wasn't ready. As we walked around, we noticed a packed lobby including people asleep with their luggage. Tons of luggage waiting outside too. This cast member at the desk now says the room is not guaranteed before 5, and previous cast member should not have told us otherwise (with a slight attitude I may add). We waited around for another hour, hot, sweaty, and tired from being up over 12 hours. I honestly expected better for $560 a night when "Check in" is 3:00pm.

After speaking with the manager we asked if we could be transferred to the Caribbean Beach since they couldn't tell us when the room would be ready, and still were not "guaranteeing" it would be ready by 5pm. The Caribbean was completely booked.

After waiting some more, going back to the next shift manager, and some computer wrangling, they somehow finally managed to get us a room in a different building (Fiji) and it was after 5pm.

So this room situation left a bad taste in our mouth for the Poly from day 1. I want to say I'm not whining, we are Disney vets and know what to expect, but we have NEVER encountered a wait for a room like this, especially for the money you are paying.
If the room is only guaranteed "Before 5pm" (and that was not even the case here) they should say so, not just publish a check in time of 3pm. We have had a room as early as 11:00am at the Carribbean before, paying less than half as much.

We headed to Captain Cooks for dinner before Epcot. When we left it was pushing 6pm. There were still many people in the lobby with luggage (waiting for Magical Express or still waiting for a room?? Hmmmm....)

We took the "short walk" to the TTC for the Epcot monorail. In 105 heat index, which was really about a 15 min. walk. Ugh.

We had a 7:30pm Fastpass for Soarin. Epoct was tremendously hot. Soarin was practically a walk on with the Fastpass and the new movie is fantastic. Lots of applause at the end.

It was just so hot when we left the Land and we were so tired from our long day, we headed back to the Poly. We took the resort monorail back instead of swealtering on the walk this time, but walking up and down all those monorail ramps made it feel just as long.
(It had been SUCH a long day...) We were there last July, and this was still probably the hottest weather we have ever encountered there.

Thoughts for Day 1

*Mediocre food at Captain Cooks for the price. We didn't eat there again except to grab stuff from the refrigerated case.

*Goodings Market is much easier and closer for groceries than the 535 Walmart, which is a zoo.

Day 2 (with photos) Coming soon!

So Day 2 started out much better. And you really can't complain about this view being "standard"

Took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom for EMH (they were sending EVERYONE through the metal detector that morning).
Crowded but not overwhelmingly so. Here's some pictures:

Headed over to Tomorrowland and rode Buzz 4 times in a row with no wait because why not (we love this ride, we're so competative with it).

Crossed over the Hub for the Adventureland rope drop (They were running the vehicles and trolly that morning. Here's a great one of the horse.)

Rope dropped a few minutes early and we were able to ride the Jungle Cruise and Pirates with a walk on.

Our Big Thunder FP wasn't until 10:30, so we tried standby, which was posted 10 min but was really a walk on. We were in the
front row for the first time and the turns feel much sharper. Saw this skywriting when we exited:

Haunted Mansion was also almost a walk on. Haunted Mansion was open, but the building is covered in scrims for renovation. Got ice cream and hit some stores, then rode the Liberty Belle while we waited for
our 12:25pm 7DMT FP.

On 7DMT, they do not let you use your FP until the EXACT minute it begins. The previous day at Soarin, we were able to go in 5 min
before, and found that to be true on most other rides we used FP. It ended up being about a 5 min wait. We also sat in the front row
again, which makes for a much better ride.

One member of our party didn't go on the Mine Train with us, and waited at the patio area in front of Pinocchio's. She said a
cast member was yelling at multiple people who were trying to filll their water bottles in the decorative fountain that the
water was not safe to drink. Ewwww. Oh the plight of the $3.00 water bottle.

We had lunch at Cosmic Rays and headed back to the Poly for a break.

We had planned on going back to catch the 3pm parade but it was just too hot. Visited a few souvenir stores out on Rt.535, (**note-
parking at the Poly is tight on the weekend. we had to park WAY down at the end when we got back).
ate dinner at the Gasperilla Grill at the Grand Floridian (sandwiches were very dry), then hopped on the bus to the Studios for
the evening.

We got in a 25 min. standby line for the Great Movie Ride which turned into a 45 min. wait. Are they not running full capacity,
or is the "Wait time" calculated by the time it takes you to get to the theater, then that isn't considered "waiting" anymore?

Wandered around the stores, and by then the heat was about doing us in so we headed back for the night.

Extra Thoughts:

*They are still doing the Welcome Show at MK, and it seemed like we were let on Main Street early both mornings.

*Again, on this day everyone was going through the metal detector. During our entire trip each person in our party was
selected 3-4 other times. I wonder how they do random selection. Do they mostly pick people who don't look like they'll give
them a problem?

*Noticed a TON of extra security, uniformed and a few I suspected were plainclothes, and almost double at the Magic Kingdom than
at other parks.

*Plenty of PhotoPass photographers out all over.

*Crowds were heavy although everyone was saying attendance is down. It wasn't wall to wall people like it usually is in summer.
One plus today - no tour groups.

*Our tip that we have used for almost 30 years is, except for Buzz on early opening, start in Adventureland and work clockwise
through the rest of the park. If you don't have little kids and don't care about Fantasyland and meet and greets, this has
always worked well for us. You can hit Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Splash (which we forgo now, but used to do), Big Thunder, and Haunted
Mansion with little to no wait. Then use your FP for later in the morning and afternoon.

*Also caught a very cute proposal on the Tomorrowland bridge in front of the castle.

Day 3 (hopefully) sometime tomorrow!

Honestly, the more I read about the Poly, the less I want to stay there! It's always been my dream resort, but lately the more I read, the more it sounds like they have a lot of issues! Yikes! Sorry it took so long to get your room. I would have been very irritated too!

Honestly, the Poly is super nice, if we didn't have that issue with the room and the weather hadn't been so hot and we would have been able to walk around more, I think we really would have enjoyed it. I've also seen many people with issues, but just as many or more so who adore it. I wonder if we had rented DVC points and gotten a better deal instead of paying rack rate if it would have "hurt" less as well. For us, it is just not worth THAT amount of money. Don't give up on your dream!

Day 3

We were able to hit all the EMH mornings on this trip, so Day 3 was Animal Kingdom. Got a bus immediately at the stop, and it was...wait for it...another disgustingly hot day! We really enjoyed our day at Animal Kingdom last year, but it was so oppressive this time we only stayed a few hours.

Safari was a walk on, many animals out and an ostrich got a little too close to the jeep. Our Everest FP was for 10:40 and we didn't want
to wait around or backtrack, so we got in a 10 min standby. Cut over to Dinoland and tried Dinosaur, as our FP for that wasn't until
11:50. Standby was a walk on. By 10:30am we had it and headed back to the Poly. We usually stay and eat at Flame Tree BBG, but
it was too hot to wait around and especially too hot to eat outside. So it is possible to hit everything without FP if
you do EMH (we don't do the Rapids, but I'm sure you could do that early with minimal wait). Once Pandora opens, a little more
planning might be necessary.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Joffrey's frozen cappuccinos! We got them before going back to the bus, in fact we got them every day
we were there. Personally, I like them better than Starbucks. They are a little pricey, but if you made your reservations through
Disney, you probably got a booklet in the mail (before your Magic Bands) with a coupon/card on the back page for recreation and dining.
You can get 20% off anything Joffrey's. Saved us a little bit of money, and the coupon is easy to overlook.

Also saw a heavier security presence here, including a dog as we left. There was a guy that was talking to the dog's handler,
he had to be plainclothes because the dog was just being way too familiar with him.

Later, we took the bus to Disney Springs. Wow is that place huge now. And hot. The bus stop is closer than the orange garage where
we parked last summer, but still a hike from the old Marketplace side. We tried to eat at Earl of Sandwich but the line was a mile
long, and we ended up getting hot dogs at the stand near the Ghirdelli building which were surprisingly good.

The atmosphere there has changed so much. It is basically a giant (pricy) outlet mall except for a few stores. No shade in the new part,
lots of concrete. Except for the Marketplace side, it's lost it's laid back charm. Waited about 15 or 20 min for a bus back to the Poly.

Ate dinner at the Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary. Food was good, one of the better quick services this trip. The characters from
Chef Mickey's went to the upper floors and waved from the balconies. Cute for the kids.

Headed over to Epcot with no FP, just hoping to walk around World Showcase. We ended up making it to the International Gateway.
We have poor tolerance for humidity, but I don't know how anyone can walk around in this. We're from South Jersey and used to
summer humidity, but this..... It was a shame because this was about the least
crowded I have seen Epcot in the summer ever. But don't miss the band in the UK pavilion, they're pretty good and they play a mix
of stuff from the 60's to the 80's. We heard the Beatles, Queen, Bowie, etc.

Day 4 soon!

Day 4

So Day 4 was 8am EMH at Hollywood Studios. This was the only morning we really had an issue with transportation. We arrived at the bus stop at 7:10am. The next bus was scheduled to arrive at 7:25am. This kept slowly creeping up every minute by another two or three
minutes until it was 7:45. The bus finally got there around 7:42, and was jam packed full. When we got to the stop, there were 3 other
families there. Were they only running one bus that morning?? Seems like it. We managed to get there just in time for rope drop.
I hate cutting it that close.

Tower of Terror and Star Tours were walk ons, (we sat in the front row at TOT, front is the best. They were only operating two elevators that morning), some shopping and pictures (significantly less Aerosmith merchandise than we've ever seen in the RRC store), then over to Toy Story for our 9:30am fast pass.

As soon as we got in line, it broke down. Ugh. We watched through the window as they evaced everyone and emptied out the standby line. After about 20 minutes, they started letting the FP line through (yay!) and when we left, they were allowing standby back in. Toy Story is one of our favs (like Buzz at the MK, we love the competition) and it seems the 3rd track is helping with the wait times - we
almost always saw less than a 60 min wait on the app the whole time we were there.

There was also a Photopass photographer set up by the Pixar Place sign. This was one we didn't get last time, and it gives you
a magic shot of Woody and Jessie dancing in front of you. Very cute.

If you were a fan of the old Art of Animation store, they have a very reduced amount of merchandise at the back of the store near the Muppets exit. It's all the way in the back and probably overlooked a lot now. They also don't have the animators there to sign the cards that go with the cels anymore. A cast member told us they work backstage, they were supposed to have them out in the shop when they moved, but there wasn't room. It loses something without them there.

Frozen cappuccinos from Joffrey's, hit the rest of the stores, (saw the Stormtroopers come out and interact with the kids, those guys must be roasting in those things!), got frozen Cokes (did I mention the heat index was 105 again?) and at 11:30 headed over
to Indy for the noon show. Indy is still a classic even though we've probably seen it 12+ times. Sitting in the top right section as
you face the stage is still the best view, you're closer to the explosions. Is it just me or have they started skimping on the
explosions? Budget cuts?

Back to the Poly, then over to the Grand Floridian and Contemporary to look in the stores. Saw a bridal party being photographed in the lobby of the GF. The older gentleman who has been a greeter at the GF for years was there with them, I can't remember his name. The Contemporary observation desk has a great view. On the way back from the Contemporary the rain really let loose for about half an hour. Surprisingly, this was the only time it really rained the whole 5 days. We're used to an afternoon shower almost every day.

Back to the Magic Kingdom later in the afternoon, dinner at Cosmic Rays and a ride on the People Mover.

Took the boat back to the Poly, it's a very nice, relaxing ride in the evening. Stops at the Grand Floridian first on the way back. The boats are much smaller than the Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness boats, so if there is a line, you're probably better off taking the monorail. The drivers we had were both "old school" Disney - trivia and pointing things out the whole way (one of the drivers said this was his dream job.) That's one of the things I miss about the buses - the drivers actually interacting with you.

We caught the Electrical Water Pageant from the dock. Great place to watch it, we were the only ones there, although there were a few
people on the beach waiting for Wishes. The alligator barge was missing of course, although I've heard it has reappeared this week (?)

Day 5 and Final Thoughts soon!

Day 5

Our last day began at the Magic Kingdom. Because it was a Tuesday morning, the resort monorail did not start until 8:30am.
MK opened at 8am for everyone, and we had no trouble getting a bus out front, arriving in plenty of time.

We went with the "old standby" plan again, starting in Adventureland. We were shocked. It was empty. I mean NO ONE. Check out the pictures.

It was strange.

We were the first ones on Pirates (and the only ones in our boat), and then did a walk on for Big Thunder and Haunted Mansion.
There was a Keys to the Kingdom tour going through the graveyard, so they shooed everyone through the fastpass entrance. Still hardly anyone back in this part of the park.

Fantasyland was the only crowded part of the park. We went over to Tomorrowland and got on Buzz another 3 times in a row. First
time ever one of us maxed out!

**Tip - after you max out, it doesn't roll over, and you can't score any more points. He got all the points in the second room hitting
the orange robot on the left side, hitting the left arm multiple times. Google it, there's many lists out there for targets. I also just read if you
take a photo of your maxed out score and show one of the cast members, they will give you a pin. Wish we knew that then!

Lunch at Cosmic Rays and shopping, then back to the Poly for a short rest, then over to Epcot for one last ride on Soarin with
our FP.

These were taken from the Main St. Railroad Station. What a great spot for pictures! The first one is a panorama shot on an Iphone 6 Plus.

Some pictures of the construction work that had begun on our Fiji longhouse the day before. No big deal, they worked mostly while we were at the parks and didn't start super early. It would have been nice to have known in advance though. It was right under our window!

So over to Epcot and Soarin. As soon as we got in line (after 5 min), it went down. They let us past the theater split after another 20 min or so, then we just sat there. No information or updates, nothing. We saw a custodian go by with a large trash can and mop, so I wonder if someone couldn't handle it. People were getting really irritated - at this point we had been waiting almost 40 min total and no one was telling us anything. Some people were yelling and left. The cast members seemed a little annoyed, but they weren't really being helpful. A few minutes later they handed out paper fastpasses for anytime return within 3 days, however stated we should stay in line. About 10 min later it was back up. The only ride we would have waited this long for, because it is fantastic. Since this was our last day, we
gave our fastpasses to a family on the way out. We ate an early dinner at Sunshine Seasons - the roast chicken was good. They
were also totally out of ice in all the drink machines.

As usual, when we got off the monorail at the Poly, people were sleeping in the lobby with their luggage waiting for a room.

We went back to the Magic Kingdom for the evening.

Grand Floridian from the monorail

Storage for the Electrical Water Pageant. Visible from the Magic Kingdom side of the monorail between the Grand and the MK station.

Walked around before staking out a spot in Frontierland for the Electric Light
Parade.

Got a great spot up by the rope only 30 min before. It was crowded but less than we're used to. They announced at 9pm the
parade would be delayed. We waited around 20 min or so, they announced it would be delayed twice more, we thought by this point they'll probably cancel it, which was odd because the weather was alright, so we started walking back out. We made it to the Emporium just as the parade started, so we stopped and watched. When I got home the next day and searched around I saw there was a medical emergency on Main St. that night right before the parade and the entrance for the floats was blocked so the ambulance could leave. Tried to take the boat back to the Poly but the line was so long we opted for the monorail instead.

Final thoughts coming soon.

Day 6 & Final Thoughts

Left super early to get to the Orlando Airport for our flight home. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to your plane.
If you take the Beachline Expressway, the toll is $2.25 each way. Stay all the way over to the right for cash payment. If you go through
the EZ Pass they'll send you a ticket (happened to a friend of ours). Be careful and watch the signs when you return your rental car.
The exit into the garage is a super sharp left turn. It is labeled better than it was last year, but still a little tricky (go slow!)

Security line was also better than it was last year. This year the lines were roped off, last year was a free for all mess with everyone bunched up.
We waited over 45 minutes last year, this year we were about 25 min total from when we got in line until we were through.

Our Spirit flight back to Atlantic City was on time again, with no problems.

Final Thoughts on the Polynesian

*Our biggest complaint was check in. Apparently after reading around, others have had issues with their rooms not being ready
at a reasonable time and/or rude front desk staff. For a deluxe hotel and as much as you are paying, we feel the room should
be ready by the official check in time of 3pm (or before!) It seemed from what we overheard, the rooms are not available until
housekeeping calls it in that an entire block of rooms is done. (cutbacks in staff?) Shouldn't there be a way they can use an app
and check in when they finish each individual room? It doesn't take any time to tap a screen. Disney has an app for everything else,
this should be easy. They could not guarantee our room would be ready before 5pm, and it wasn't. How is this acceptable for deluxe?

*Food - we have to mention we are a grab and go family - we don't do table service meals due to the time involved - we want to ride stuff!
So the only spot we ate at the Poly was Captain Cooks, which was acceptable but not great. Service was also a little slow.

*Room - 3rd Floor Fiji had a great view, convenient to the Great Cerimonial House and the boat dock, although a long walk to the
Transportation and Ticket Center. Housekeeping was good but the room was not vaccuumed every day. The interior hallways looked darkand dingy/dirty. The ice machine was broken on our floor and when we mentioned it to a housekeeper were greeted with a stare, a grunt, then she walked away. And OMG that elevator, or as we nicknamed it "The Death Trap". The noises it made! Screeching and grinding - SCARY.

*Grounds - clean and well kept. It is a very nice looking place, and I think we would have enjoyed it more if we had felt like walking
around but it was just SO hot and humid. The noise from the Luau is very minor and over by 10pm. Watching the Electrical Water
Padgent from the dock is great.

*Transportation - Buses overall were great except on our morning at the Studios. Less than a 10 minute wait or even no wait other times.
Monorail was excellent and the maintenence the one morning didn't inconvenience us. The bus was just as quick.

*Front desk staff could have been more welcoming/courtious and less abrupt. Overall a good experience but we will not
stay there again based on our check in experience and the attitude of the front desk staff.

Park thoughts coming soon......

Parks - Final Thoughts

*Crowds were down slightly from our visit last July. Also major lack of tour groups.

*FastPass worked well. It would be nice if resort guests could book a 4th Fastpass in advance.

*Take advantage of Extra Magic Hours. I know some of the touring plan sites and crowd calendars suggest avoiding them, and that can be
true if you are visiting that park and don't get there until later in the morning or afternoon. If you arrive at rope drop (EMH or
regular opening) you can get on a few rides (sometimes 4 or 5) with little to no wait. Arrange your Fastpasses for later or when you
return in the evening.

*Security was up everywhere, especially the Magic Kingdom. Plan on arriving a few minutes earlier. The wait was not terrible anywhere though.

*Cleanliness - I've seen some pictures lately of the mess found in some of the parks. We didn't really notice anything out of the
ordinary and actually found the restrooms to be a little cleaner than they were last year. Or maybe we were just lucky.

*There was a better variety of food than last year. Our favorite Quick Service was the Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary.

*Don't miss Soarin. The new film is great.

*Memory Maker is well worth it.

*Toy Story wait times are definitely improved with the 3rd track.

*The construction on Buena Vista Drive in front of Disney Springs is finished and traffic flows much better. They are still working on the road
further down past Key West.

*We will be returning when Pandora/Avatar opens in 2017, but we'll be back to the Caribbean Beach Resort.

*I'll be checking this thread for awhile if you have any questions or comments for me. I had so much fun sharing my trip with you guys!

For the amount of money they charge for the Polynesian, they should have delivered a more welcoming environment to you. My hunch is that they've made some cuts in housekeeping, and perhaps in other areas as well. I know it's after the fact now, but I hope you may consider forwarding your comments to Disney's guest relations department. It's not just that you were dissatisfied with some aspects of your stay in the hotel, but that you've made the decision not to return. If you noticed these things on your visit, I wonder how many others did as well?
