Compact or DSLR?

Hi all, I wondered what you're opinions were on what type of camera to take around the parks. I've been around with both, a compact last time and a DSLR before (luckily I had someone who was willing to carry the DSLR for me that time ) and got great pictures with both...but how do you manage walking around a park all day with an expensive bit of equipment like that? And if you do, do you have a somewhat compact case which it can fit in rather than a full on camera bag?

I tend to feel that if you are going to the parks for a day to do lots of rides and to take in the parks to the full, a compact is the way to go. If you are going there with a slant to wanting to do some more serious photography, you can't beat the SLR. Perhaps take both and designate a day here or there to do some SLR work, but make the compact your staple cam.

Good advice! Took a compact last time round and it was handy to fit inside a small water proof wallet I could carry around. Its fairly high quality for a compact. Would be nice to do some serious SLR shooting but only being there for 2 weeks (plus visiting Universal during my time) time will probably be fairly limited - I'd want to experience as much as possible!!

I would suggest you think about what you will be photographing and take the camera that works best for what you will be photographing. For shots outside a point and shoot will work well, if on the other hand you plan on taking pictures of kids doing things inside like doing the meet and greet with the princesses or fairies, then a dslr with an attached flash will be a godsend. Also if you plan on night shots then a point and shoot will be a poor choice compared to a dslr.

When we go we take both, but leave the heavy one at the hotel on days we know we aren't going to need it and only lug it around when we want performance beyond the point and shoot.

The real advantage of DSLR with compacts would be its bigger sensor thus better shots at low-light conditions as opposed to compacts. Plus you can change lenses.

If youre looking for a bag, the brand lowepro offer a lot of sling and compact bags that can make bringing a DSLR more convenient. Plus it has easy access during photo opportunities

I just got back from WDW and printed my over 500 pictures I took from my Olympus Stylus 720 SW. Chose this only because of it waterproofness, we have boat and did not want to worry about it getting wet. Works ok most of time but really happy with it. DH told me that i need a better camera. Was thinking of getting something larger and keeping this as back up and for the boat. No where near a pro and am only starting to get my feet wet. Would love some simple advise to what i should look at. Dont want break the bank with this purchase..more i spend on a new camera less towards the next WDW trip. Any insite and help would be awesome. I know some of you have some really great pictures posted on the site. Thanks much for any help. Feel free to PM me with suggestions.

Are you looking for an SLR or another compact? This thread discusses a bit the pros and cons of each. :)

In the past I always intended to bring my SLR to WDW. I only did once. Every other trip it was my compact Canon point-n-shoot because I could slide it in my pocket and it was gone.

While SLR's can produce great photos (eg: night-time/low-light photos), in the end I always prefer the small form factor of my compact Canon. More so to the point I recently sold my SLR cause I got to the point where I never used it.

So for me, compact is the way to go.
